The Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) presented Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, a globally recognized conservation scientist from Assam, with "The Harry Messel Award" for Conservation Leadership on Friday. The prize was given to Dr. Talukdar during the 5th IUCN SSC Leaders' Meeting, which is taking place in Abu Dhabi right now. He has received recognition for his leadership in the Species Survival group and his contributions to species protection on the ground. The first step constructed in a sustainable community in India will also be the first in 500 years to be used for water conservation. World-renowned builder Sandeep Sonigra, renowned for his ecologically aware projects, including India's first five-star green project, is building this particular stepwell in history in the EvoGreen City, which is being built in Pune's Dehu. The Plan Until Now ~ Built on roughly 45 acres in Dehu, EvoGreen City will be the first sustainable community in the nation. The community will be entirely dependent on renewable energy and gathered water thanks to two German institutions. There are about 70 acres of surrounding woodland and one kilometer of the Indrayani River running alongside. This stepwell, with a 90 thousand cubic meter volume, will be four times larger than the 24 thousand cubic meter Abhaneri stepwell in Rajasthan. This stepwell will raise the groundwater level, benefiting not only the 15,000 residents of the township but also the entire Dehu village, by preserving every drop of rainwater. The lovable moniker "Bum-breathing punk" refers to the Mary River turtle (Elusor macrusus), which has the unusual evolutionary ability to breathe through its cloaca, enabling it to go three days without coming to the surface. "They vanished due to hunting; they did not go extinct but rather were so small that nobody saw them," said Mariano Coscarella, a marine ecosystem researcher and biologist at CONICET, an Argentine scientific organisation. "In this case, it took over 80 years for them to have appreciable numbers for people to realise they were there." Because they spawn every two to three years, sei whales—which are distinguished by their enormous size and unique blue-grey coloring—have helped to slowly but steadily rebuild their number over the past century. How endangered seabirds blossomed on this island for the first time in decades.

About Peruvian Seabirds ~ Throughout the beaches and inshore seas of the Humboldt Current, these seabirds are common and noticeable. Occasionally, they dive sharply into the water in groups of hundreds, joining feeding frenzy terns, gulls, and cormorants. They are frequently observed sitting among pelicans and cormorants on jetties and cliffs. The adult's snow-white head and neck, along with its black upperparts and white back scaling, make it easily recognizable. Juveniles have a darker head and body and are often dingier. In contrast, the Blue-footed Booby (which is frequently found with Peruvian) always has a white body that contrasts with a dark neck. The vocalizations of female Peruvian boobies vary, ranging from trumpet-like quacks to honks. In contrast, the male booby usually whistles. Adult individuals of the species are the only ones capable of this type of auditory communication because it takes years to develop such vocalizations. Only the waters of the Humboldt current, which runs off the coast of South America, are home to the Peruvian booby. Off the coast of Peru and south to the center of Chile, they can be found. Numerous studies have been conducted on the species found on the islands of Lobos de Tierra and Lobos de Afuera as a result of their abundance. Their colonies build their nests on wind-swept, smooth sand flats where the temperature stays between around 28 and 38 degrees Celsius. These pampas, or salt flats, provide a rather high density of booby nests. Chile ~ Their Nesting Place The majority of the Peruvian seabirds nesting locations have been found by chance due to the lack of comprehensive surveys in the plains of the Peruvian desert. Following the discovery of additional nesting sites in the future, the number of nesting places and distribution range may rise. While the exact location of the nesting habitat varied from place to place, terns could always be found either in front of the nesting area (Mollendo) or near wetlands on sandy beaches 50–100 meters from the shore, with grass and shrubby vegetation behind (Puerto Viejo), or on firm sand with gravel, free of plant growth, and typically 1-2 km inland (Pampa Lechuzas and Yanyarina). Only the arid plains, often more than one kilometer inland, have Peruvian Tern colonies been discovered in Chile (Johnson 1967, Devillers & Terschuren 1976, Vilina 1998, Guerra-Correa 2003). According to our observations, Peruvian Terns can pick sandy beaches that are close to wetlands rather than just nesting inland, as was previously thought. Seabirds that nest inland may do so in proximity to areas where there is a large concentration of terrestrial predators. Restoring native wildlife and the ecology ~ Seabirds' predicament ~ Habitat degradation and predation by invasive species pose a danger to the Peruvian diving petrel (Pelecanoides garnotii), also referred to as yuncos in the local dialect. For example, foxes and rabbits have mostly pushed the species away of Chañaral Island in Chile, which was once a major nesting habitat. When rabbits were sent to Chañaral Island in the early 1900s, it was to provide food for fishermen who had become stranded. However, the rabbits soon overtook the bird burrows and completely destroyed the island's flora. Subsequently, foxes were brought in to manage the rabbit population; however, their primary objective appeared to be scavenging the diving petrels. Concerning the CONAF Initiative ~ In 2013, scientists and animal care supervisors from Island Conservation and the Chilean National Forestry Corporation, also known by its Spanish abbreviation CONAF, initiated the process of restoring the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve. This nature reserve, which includes the three Chilean islands of Chañaral, Damas, and Choros, was initially restored through the removal of invasive species. The Chañaral was proclaimed free of foxes and rabbits in 2017. A group from Island Conservation, CONAF, Catholic University of the North, and Project Puffin then started using social attraction techniques in 2019 to get the Peruvian diving petrels to return to Chañaral Island. This is a common tactic used by experts to get threatened seabirds to establish new nesting grounds or return to areas they have previously used. Scientists have developed a 10-minute treatment that restores the sense of smell and taste in patients suffering from parosmia, a condition associated with COVID-19 infection. While most individuals recover their olfactory and gustatory senses after a bout of COVID-19, some continue to experience these symptoms for extended periods. Recognizing this post-COVID parosmia, researchers have devised a minimally invasive procedure to address the condition. Lead author Professor Adam Zoga explained that parosmia is typically observed in cases of brain trauma, surgery, stroke, viral syndromes, and certain head and neck tumors. Initially uncertain about the effectiveness of the procedure for parosmia, the team injected anesthetic into the stellate ganglion in the neck to stimulate the autonomic nervous system, guided by CT imaging. The entire procedure takes less than 10 minutes and requires no sedation. It has previously been used to treat various other conditions, including cluster headaches and phantom limb pain. For this study, 54 patients with post-COVID parosmia resistant to conventional therapies were referred to the researchers. Follow-up data was collected for 37 patients, revealing that 22 of them reported improved symptoms within a week after the injection. Among these 22 individuals, 18 experienced significant and progressive improvement by the one-month mark. Notably, there were no complications or adverse events associated with the treatment. In a remarkable initiative aimed at water conservation and rural development, Chhattisgarh's Narwa project has brought dying canals back to life, rejuvenating water channels and improving groundwater levels. The project, which began in mid-2019, has already revived an impressive 6,395 rivulets, culverts, and water resources in the forested areas of the state. Under the flagship programme of Narwa-Garwa-Guruwa-Baari, the Narwa project focuses on the revival of canals to boost the rural economy. The state forest department, in collaboration with the Chhattisgarh Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA), has played a key role in implementing this innovative concept. Using GIS-based data, the project selected sites for the treatment of drainage lines and watercourses. Forest personnel received expert training on mobile applications, GIS-based surveys, and natural resource management. Catchment Area Treatment plans were meticulously prepared to reduce run-off, prevent soil erosion, and enhance groundwater levels. The project also involved interactive sessions with village communities to ensure their participation and support. Chhattisgarh's intricate network of water bodies had suffered due to forest degradation, changes in land use, and increased pressure on natural ecosystems. This led to rapid water run-off, groundwater depletion, soil erosion, and reduced land productivity. However, the Narwa project has successfully safeguarded the fertile topsoil, maintained groundwater levels, and ensured perennial streams that cater to the needs of the ecosystem and local communities throughout the year. The project has not only improved the quality of forest cover but also provided irrigation facilities to local villagers, contributing to sustainable rural development. With over 130 lakh groundwater augmentation structures constructed since 2019, the initiative has not only restored watercourses but also increased groundwater levels by more than 20 cm in surrounding regions. The treated canals now serve as a year-round water source for wildlife, agriculture, fisheries, and local inhabitants.

The World's First Asian King Vulture Breeding Program Aims to Reverse Population Collapse

Uttar Pradesh is making a groundbreaking effort to save the critically endangered Asian King Vulture with the world's first conservation and breeding center of its kind. Set in the picturesque Maharajganj district, the Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre (JCBC) is a cutting-edge facility that aims to protect and revive the dwindling population of these majestic birds by breeding them in captivity and releasing them back into their natural habitat. The JCBC is spread over 1.5 hectares and includes several aviaries, such as breeding and holding aviaries, nursery aviaries for juveniles, hospital and recovery aviaries, a food processing center, and an incubation center. The center, valued at approximately Rs 15 crore, is a state-of-the-art facility that will provide a safe environment for the vultures to thrive. The Asian King Vulture has been listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List since 2007 due to the widespread use of diclofenac in veterinary medicine in India. This has led to a population collapse in recent years. The JCBC aims to breed at least 40 vultures in captivity over 15 years to ensure the sustainable conservation of the species. Veterinary usage of diclofenac has since been banned in India to prevent further population decline. The first phase of the project included the construction of the center's infrastructure in 2021. The project's second phase entails breeding vultures, and the facility will initially have ten vultures available for breeding. The Bombay Natural History Society has joined with the forest department to provide technical guidance. A male vulture may be captured from the wild and brought to the JCBC for breeding reasons because they are known to be better at caring for the chicks. How One Village is Reducing Man-Animal Conflict Through Eco-Friendly Practices

Dhodrokusum village, located near the Debrigarh wildlife sanctuary, is setting an inspiring example by becoming the first “green village” in the sanctuary. The village, consisting of 48 households, is taking small steps towards reducing its dependency on the forest and adopting eco-friendly practices to reduce man-animal conflicts in the region. The Hirakud wildlife division is playing a crucial role in this initiative by bringing about behavioral changes among the villagers. To prevent open defecation, toilets have been constructed in all households, and earthen reusable dustbins have been provided to prevent the haphazard dumping of garbage in the forest or Hirakud wetland. Additionally, solar streetlights have been installed to light up the village after sunset to prevent animals from entering the village at night. All households have been provided with fuel-efficient chullahs, and those who can afford LPG have been provided with gas connections to reduce the use of firewood and prevent large-scale wood collection from the Debrigarh sanctuary. The women of the village have been trained to use these fuel-efficient chullahs effectively. The Hirakud wildlife division believes that the green village will reduce pressure on wildlife habitats and promote eco-friendly practices among neighbouring villages. The adoption of these practices will create a conducive space for animals such as Sambar, Indian Gaur, deer, and peacocks that are seen grazing in the periphery of Dhodrokusum. During the celebration of Utkal Dibas, the residents of Dhodrokusum village made a commitment to serve as a model for wildlife conservation. In the future, women's self-help groups (SHGs) and the village eco-development committee will be responsible for maintaining the village under the supervision of the Hirakud wildlife division. It's a grand success story for India as thanks to the extraordinary success of saving tigers from extinction, they now make up 70% of the world's tiger population. The Center informed the Supreme Court on Friday that the population of big cats is growing by 6% annually, offsetting natural losses. India doubled its tiger population in 2018, four years ahead of plan, according to the St. Petersburg Declaration on the protection of tigers, TOI reported. The top Tiger States of India (by Tiger population) are Madhya Pradesh (526); Karnataka (524); Uttrakhand (442). The number of tiger reserves has increased to 53, totaling about 76,000 square kilometers. In UP, a brand-new tiger reserve called Ranipur Tiger Reserve has been established. The country is home to 2967 tigers. According to a statement, the nation's natural ecosystem serves as the basis for scientific management of the species, and artificial breeding procedures are not encouraged there. The effectiveness of the process is clearly shown by the results of the quadrennial all-tiger estimations conducted in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018. Tigers are classified as being in the 'Endangered' category on the IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species. In Asia, tigers can be found in 12 regional tiger conservation landscapes (TCLs). Six of these are global priority TCLs for long-term tiger conservation significance, and together they account for more than 70% of the global genetic diversity of the tiger species.

Sarvesh Prabhu, a 17-year-old research intern at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), knew that the leaves of the custard apple tree (Ramphal) were traditionally used to treat dysentery. He delved deeper and explored the bio-insecticidal properties of the same. The extracts were used in the research, and it was discovered that they were successful against three destructive pests, with a mortality rate ranging from 78 to 88 percent. It was decided to investigate the pest mortality rate in greenhouse and field settings because it rendered a positive outcome in laboratory settings. Farmers all across the world utilize cheap fertilizers to get rid of pests like Pod borer and Green peach aphids which alone result in an annual loss of over 40% of crop yields. It has been discovered that Ramphal plants' chemical constitution functions as a natural defense mechanism against these pests thus providing farmers with an eco-friendly, cost-effective and long-term solution for pests that can replace harmful chemical pesticides. Sarvesh took this project to Atlanta where he represented India in the International Science and Engineering Fair, considered to be among the world’s largest pre-college science fairs. The project, which won third place and a monetary prize of US $1,000, was hailed as a game-changer. Additionally, Sarvesh received accolades and a reward of Rs. 1 lakh as part of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Innovation Award for School Children for his accomplishment.

An Innovative Startup That Uses Tech To Take Care of Trees!

Imagine a startup that digitizes the process of taking care of a plant. That’s exactly the initiative of two classmates who are environmentally conscious and wish to contribute to this cause. Abhijith Kumar Meenakumari and Aashuthosh B Sai founded the startup Tree Tag which uses technology to record the growth of thousands of trees. Abhijith, a mechanical engineering graduate, has always been enthusiastic about initiatives for environmental conservation. He came across this idea when he was asked to develop a platform to track the growth of around 7000 trees as part of the tree banking initiative of Meenangadi village in Wayanad. It became a success and he was approached by many nature enthusiasts for similar services. Tree Tag was founded in 2021 and already caters to over 50 clients all over the globe. The majority of its business prospects arise from its client’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects that prioritize environmental conservation. Tree Tag helps to track the status of trees planted during afforestation projects carried out by companies in association with NGOs or other such organizations. It is also collaborating with a major project of tracking one million trees in the Amazon, the largest rainforest in the world. It also has plans to use satellite as well as drone-based services for its larger projects. In a hackathon organized by Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), - Climathon-2022, the company was adjudged the winner. It has won numerous accolades for addressing environmental issues.

The Ancient Indian Natural Farming Technique Gets a Boost As Central Government Dedicates Rs 1,584 Crore Towards It

The lack of organic content in soil is a serious concern for all. The quality of soil is depleting and in turn, this brings down the nutritional value of food. Chemical farming has led to the erosion of soil and drastic measures are needed to save it. On the occasion of World Soil Day and Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a conference was held with Niti Ayog in collaboration with GIZ affiliated with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany. Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar presided as the chief guest and addressed the importance of soil conservation. As a remedy for depleting soil, Shri Tomar said that it was high time farmers switched to natural farming. He stated that the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Shri Modi, is collaborating with the States to promote natural farming. According to him, the Natural Farming System is a time-honored method of farming that farmers have utilized for centuries. Back then, people also knew how to coexist peacefully with nature. Numerous improvements have been made to support natural farming in states like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, etc. Over the past year, 4.78 lakh extra hectares of land have been converted to natural farming in 17 States. The National Mission on Natural Farming was approved by the Central Government as a separate program with a budget of Rs. 1,584 crores to promote natural farming. This measure will go a long way in ensuring better soil health which in turn will benefit mankind and future generations.

Good News for India As Wildlife Biologist Bags United Nation’s Champions of the Earth Award

The UN's highest environmental honor, the Champions of the Earth award, given to individuals for their transformative action to prevent, halt, and reverse ecosystem deterioration, has been awarded this year to Indian wildlife biologist Dr. Purnima Devi Barman. She has been accorded the award in the Entrepreneurial Vision category. Wildlife biologist Barman is the head of the "Hargila Army," an all-female grassroots conservation campaign working to save the Greater Adjutant Stork from extinction. She is also the Senior Project Manager of the Avifauna Research and Conservation Division, Aaranyak. Growing up on the banks of the Brahmaputra river in Assam, Barman fell in love with birds and would sing to the egrets and storks. She spent most of her career working to save the endangered greater adjutant stork, the second-rarest stork species in the world. The stork is locally known as "hargila" in Assamese, which means "bone swallower," and Barman understood she had to change people's ideas about the bird to conserve it, so she rallied a group of village women to assist her. Today, there are about 10,000 women that make up the "Hargila Army." They guard nesting areas, treat hurt storks that have fallen from their nests, and plan "baby showers" to welcome the arrival of fresh hatchlings. The greater adjutant stork regularly appears in traditional songs, poems, festivals, and plays. According to Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP, "Barman's groundbreaking conservation effort has empowered thousands of women, created entrepreneurs, and improved lifestyles while saving the greater adjutant stork from extinction."

From Holy Waste to Flower Power, These Eco-Warriors Are Doing Commendable Work

Maya Vivek and Minal Dalmia from Gundlapochampally village in Kompally are good friends who wanted to do something together. Their enthusiasm and efforts led to the inception of ‘Holy Waste’- a social enterprise that ensures the flowers from temples are processed productively and don’t clog water bodies. Maya and Minal got the idea to start this venture from Kanpur-based brand ‘Help us green’ that process flowers from temples. How the Enterprise Started Maya and Minal would forage the colony’s gardens for flowers and began experimenting at home to understand the process. They finally got a hold of the process by the end of the month and set their first bin at Skandagiri Temple in Secunderabad. Currently, the Holy Waste has 20 bins situated at 20 different temples in the city. They have an auto trolley that empties the bins at their centre four times a week. They also answer emergency calls to pick up flowers from flower shops, wedding venues, or functions by staying in touch with event managers. Flower Power The flowers thus collected are lugged up in bedsheets and carried to the third floor of their processing unit. A team of women pluck the petals from the semi-dried and wilted flowers. The petals are then dried and powdered to be made into soaps and incense sticks. The stalk and bulbs of flowers are put into compost drums to form natural compost. There is a steady workforce of seven women who have now become experts in their work. The incense sticks and soaps are sold online and at organic bazaars. They also make personalized gifts for occasions. During festival season, Holy Waste processes at least 50 kg of flowers daily. Due to the friends’ efforts, the flowers and garlands don’t end up in the already polluted Hussain Sagar lake. The duo also won the Best Green Startup award under Eco Ideas by Green India Awards 2019.

These Strong-Willed Tribal Women Find Themselves in the Driver’s Seat, Literally

It is certainly going to be a smooth ride for the first batch of confident young 21 women who are undergoing training to run State Transport buses in Maharashtra The initiative to induct women drivers in the fleet was taken by the state transport minister Diwakar Raote. His aim is to empower women and he plans to induct 142 women in the second batch of women drivers. Training and Hard Work Through sheer determination and hard work, these young women who had earlier never occupied a driver’s seat, now flaunt a learner’s license. They will apply for a permanent license within a month. They have successfully completed theory classes that lasted for six months. They are now undergoing on-road training during which they cover 750 km across different terrain- hilly areas, ghats and forested patches. Difficulties and Hardships Every dream and ambition is always replete with its problems and struggles. It took enormous courage for Anusuya Madavi who was not even confident of crossing a street in her town to now drive an ST bus. Pooja Nehtam, another determined young lady, would take her three-month-old child to theory classes. Jyotsna Thakre turned down two marriage proposals as her suitor’s family wouldn't come to terms with her driver's job. Many women had to convince their family to allow them to take up this unusual and demanding job. Sheetal Powar, another learner is of the opinion that if a woman can run a house, then this job shouldn’t be tough. These dedicated and tough women are an inspiration to many.

Youngsters Devote Time And Energy For A Good Cause

At a time when youngsters usually love to hang out at malls or restaurants, a bunch of youngsters in Tiruvannamalai has devoted their time and energy to cleaning up and reviving eight ancient water tanks. Their efforts of giving a new lease of life to these water bodies in Tiruvannamalai is commendable as these tanks have been lying in a state of neglect for several decades and were being used as a garbage dump. A group of 20 to 30 youngsters initially joined hands to clean up water bodies in the town and devoted their time every Sunday for the initiative. Soon they were joined by many others and they all had been spending three to four hours for it each Sunday since September 18 last year. 28-year-old M Poova Raghavan, a member of the group said that as a child, he had seen these water tanks brimming with water. However, over the years he was dejected to see the tanks being abandoned and turning into garbage dumping yards. Even drainage was discharged into many of these water bodies. That is when he decided to direct his energies into conserving the water tanks. When repeated petitions to the local bodies fell on deaf ears, the group of youngsters decided to take the matter into their own hands. They removed 15 to 20 tonnes of waste, including plastic and medical wastes. The youngsters formed a forum called 'Neer Thuli (Water Drop)' to take forward their initiative. Their mission continues to garner strength as they even dug up and restored a tank that was destroyed and levelled.

Dantewada is a tribal dominated district in Chattisgarh where exploits of the Maoists often make headlines. The District Collector of Dantewada, Saurabh Kumar is on a mission to guide the bright young minds on the right career path so that they do not have to go down the path of violence. The 2009-batch IAS officer is quietly helping students by conducting two-hour career counselling sessions, held every Wednesday popularly known as “Lunch with the Collector.” The session is attended by 50-100 students from government schools in the district. Every student speaks about his /her area of interest in studies. Kumar and his team make notes and guide them on the professional courses that they could pursue. Often, even brighter students are not aware of institutes such as IITs or AIIMS. After the counselling session, everyone partakes in a simple lunch of poori, dal, sabzi, salad and papad. Over lunch, the officials in Team Kumar—district judges, district police officers or any other visiting VIP—seek feedback from the students and answer their queries. These sessions help to boost the students’ self-confidence. They derive inspiration from the stories of struggle and competitiveness that the Collector and police officers narrate.

Since last five months,709 butterflies of 48 species were spotted. The responsible citizens who have undertaken this project belong to Solankhi Dham, Neelkanth Heights and Gawand Baug in Thane. With the help of experts, they planted host and nectar plants for these winged beauties and have been studying about their transformation from caterpillars into pupa and then into butterflies. Their hard work and enthusiasm have helped to increase the count of these beautiful creatures. It shot up to 80 in August, 266 in September and the highest,337 in October. They submitted a report of the findings to BNHS's butterfly expert Dr. Raju Kasambe in an event in Thane on Sunday. Samir Gulavane, the founder of Urban Biodiversity Conservation Group (UBCG), began the project at his society in June. It was implemented under the guidance of experts like Dr. Alka Bhagwat and Dr. Kasambe. With their help, a group of eco-citizens including children spent the last five months participating in taking care of these plants and even studying their lifecycle. Navin Augustine, resident of Neelkant Heights which recorded a total of 523 butterfly sightings said that their society’s proximity to the Yeoor forest and the host and nectar saplings that they nurtured in the gardens helped to attract 47 species of butterflies over the past few months, much to the excitement of children who wish to continue with the project. Thrilled by the result of this unique initiative, BNHS's Raju Kasambe, who has written a book on the butterflies of Maharashtra said that these are the only societies in the country that have adopted this unique but crucial project of conserving butterflies within their complex in such a scientific manner.

Punjab village to be given national award for water conservation

Few people lead by example. A village in Punjab, Man Aspal has not only solved its water woes, but also stopped its ponds from being polluted by implementing proper water conservation methods. In recognition of its efforts, the village has been chosen for a national award by the Union Ministry of Rural Development. Union Rural Development Minister, Narendra Singh Tomar will hand over the award to the village panchayat on June 19 in Delhi. The people of Man Aspal village do not allow its water to go waste. Through proper water conservation methods, water is not only reused, but the flow of water into ponds is stopped, thus protecting the water bodies from getting polluted. Water conservation methods include constructing soak pits and septic tanks (concrete tank used to store used water) in every house of the village, which has been completed under MGNREGS ( Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme). The villagers executed the rural employee guarantee scheme with its USP being water conservation. In 2015, with the help of a multinational company, the villagers initiated the soak pit project which dealt with waste water management to make the villages drain free. Under the project, soak pits of four feet by 10 feet with a septic tank of three feet by four feet were constructed at the cost Rs 3.29 lakh in all the 65 houses. Among the 107 MGNREGS job card holders, majority of them were employed in the project. Apart from building soakpits, they also renovated a pond, bricklined a street and laid a drinking water pipeline all under MGNREGS.

Now, new technology to conserve wild life in Rajasthan

An advanced surveillance mechanism will be set up by Rajasthan Government to monitor and conserve the endangered wild animals specially tigers and leopards. Hi-tech mechanism comprising drones, thermal-imaging cameras, high-resolution optical and data centres and radio sets will be installed by information technology (IT) department by March 2018. It has requested Rs 50 crore for floating tenders and commissioning wildlife surveillance (WS) as well as anti-poaching systems (APS). The WS and APS project has been planned to ensure conservation of tigers and other wild animals. It will enhance the efficiency of forest officials and identify areas prone to poaching and other wildlife crimes. It will also keep a check on infiltration, poaching and illegal mining; and provide fact-based information for effective decision-making. A number of wildlife offences – including poaching, human encroachment and smuggling of contraband items – have been reported from Rajasthan in the last decade. Many incidents of the kind have also gone unreported due to a rise in poachers and lack of resources to monitor large forested areas. Wild animals are active at night, when visibility is poor. In such circumstances, the use of thermal-imaging cameras will help. Forty-metre-high static towers, equipped with a mix of thermal, optical and dome cameras, will be installed. The feed will be recorded at a modular containerised control room, and then sent to the data centre at the headquarters. Drones will also be used as and when needed, in case of fire and natural calamities. The local control room will be linked to every camera under the new wildlife conservation mechanism, so wildlife movement patterns can be evaluated.

Sparrow conservation by a tutor in Gujarat

Creating a habitat for the city birds is what this gentleman thought about and has now successfully created heaven for sparrows in Pirana where he takes care of them. Living besides the toxic fumes and nauseating smell of Piranha dumping yard, Imran Shekhani observed that city birds had almost disappeared from the city’s scape. Shekhani who is a private tutor and a casual announcer on radio station began his conservation efforts five years before. He got an artificial nest from Jagat Kinkhabwala - who was mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his radio program -- 'Mann Ki Baat' on Sunday for former's book 'Save the Sparrows'. He said, “Earlier, I used to get regular support from the people, but it reduced for last few years. As I am a tutor, I also ask my students to set a nest at their home for sparrow conservation," Shekhani said. Shekhani does not charge any fees from the kids he teaches living near Pirana dumping yard but only insists that they should put nests at their home for the sparrows. "Har Ghar Shiksha (Education in each house) and Ghar Ghar Chidiya (sparrow in every house) is his desire and thus giving free tuition to needy kids is fulfilling both the wishes. “Every year, over 150 sparrows come and hatch their eggs. My place is like their maternity home. Not only me, but my 9-year-old son Amaan also cares for them and feed those sparrows during morning and evening," Shekhani said. He believes that this is nothing but a miracle by nature as these sparrows are mingling at a place where in human being cannot even stand for a while. He added, "We stay at a place where toxic fumes are coming out from a huge mountains of filth and especially on Sunday, smoke covers the entire place. But I feel Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who promotes cleanliness, will do something for Pirana dumping yard."

Mega plans being made for conservation of Rashtrapati Bhavan

In a major conservation drive, the iconic main building of the Rashtrapati Bhavan will soon undergo restoration works to maintain its majestic glory. The project has been undertaken by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). It will conduct a study and analyze the main building of the President's estate and a report will be submitted to the President Pranab Mukherjee within two months. Director (Projects) at INTACH Ajay Kumar said that there are only some concerns, but no big issues with the main building. He said that an assessment will be carried out of the entire main building which also houses the family wing. He also said that maintenance of various buildings and architecture in the Rashtrapati Bhavan is important and so far, work has been completed on the conservation of two clock towers and two museums in the President's Estate. INTACH is a non-profit heritage conservation body based in Delhi. Its convener Swapna Liddle said that although Rashtrapati Bhavan is a heritage building, it is also a living building as people reside there. Therefore it has to be conserved in such a way that it functions as per today's needs. The experts of the organization are making a comprehensive management plan to conserve the building's heritage as well as make it livable by incorporating amenities like air conditioners and mobile ports.

From May 14, petrol pumps will be shut on every Sunday

To conserve oil, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ordered to keep fuel outlets shut on every Sunday in eight states. Suresh Kumar, an executive committee member of the consortium of Indian petroleum dealers said that government had made this decision a year back. But the oil marketing companies had asked the government to rethink over the decision. The decision is made over Mr. Narendra Modi’s call on conservation of oil in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme. From May 14, outlets in states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Haryana would be shut on Sundays for entire day. This accounts to about 20,000 outlets closed on Sundays. On holidays, the fuel outlet will have one staff member to provide fuel in emergency situations. On implementation of this decision, oil companies will suffer a loss of about Rs. 150 crore due to no operation of outlets on Sundays. Discussions are going on over the issue of Oil marketing companies hiking the margins. It is a difficult task to get the support of Oil marketing companies over the decision but the government has promised successful efforts and negotiations with them for the same.

Mailam farmers reap rewards of water conservation

Tamil Nadu is facing a severe drought this year and most villagers had to stop farming and look for alternative sources of income due to the non availability of water for irrigation. Mailam is an exception where farmers are still involved in agricultural and horticultural operations, thanks to a comprehensive project undertaken for increasing the depth and renovation of agricultural wells in the region with technical and financial assistance from MSSRF (MS Swaminathan Research Foundation) and Wabag, a multinational company involved in waste water treatment. The famous Murugan temple in Mailam attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over northern Tamil Nadu. Agriculture was seasonal as most wells would go dry soon after the monsoons. In May-June 2015, the MSSRF roped in Wabag to find a lasting solution to Mailam's water woes. The MSSRF-Wabag tie-up brought Rs 36 lakh funding for desilting, deepening and construction of retaining walls for some 30 wells in the region. The result was amazing. D Srinivasan said that he used to carry out groundnut cultivation in 2 acres of land out of the total 5 acres. After his well was rejuvenated, he could cultivate paddy in one acre and watermelon in the remaining four acres. Despite scarcity of water last year, he could earn 1.7 lakh profit on watermelons and he used paddy for his family's consumption. It has been a pleasant surprise for the villagers as there have been many more such success stories. 937 farmers in the region started the 'Nallavur Farmer Producer Company' and the area under cultivation for its members increased from 67 acres to 156.5 acres. Periyathambi, secretary of the company, says due to the water conservation project, he is confident of undertaking any cultivation and is sure he will have enough water to irrigate his entire 3.5 acres. The company also helps its members by buying their produce and selling it once price improves. Periyathambi said that they have bought three acres of land for the company. They also plan to buy tractors and other equipment that will then be leased out to members on subsidized rates. He said that their next step was to start a brand of their own and market the produce as products in Chennai city.

IFS Officer Jagdish Bakan Honored by UNESCO for Conservation Efforts in Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve

IFS officer Jagdish Bakan has become the first Indian to receive the prestigious Michel Batisse Award from UNESCO for his remarkable efforts in managing the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve. The Gulf of Mannar, known for its rich biodiversity, is home to over 4,223 species of flora and fauna, including critically endangered species like the Dugong dugon and hawksbill sea turtles. Bakan, as the Director of the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve Trust, took on the challenge of protecting this unique ecosystem. His initiatives focused on creating sustainable livelihoods for local communities and reducing their reliance on fishing, which had been the main source of income for years. He encouraged the adoption of alternative livelihoods and initiated projects like mangrove plantations, coral transplantation, and eco-tourism. The success of Bakan's conservation efforts led to his recognition by UNESCO. His case study on sustainable livelihood development and community-based biodiversity conservation received global acclaim. While the journey towards change was not easy, Bakan's perseverance and scientific approach, supported by his background in chemistry, played a vital role in implementing effective conservation measures. Bakan's micro-credit system empowered over 2,700 self-help groups, comprising around 36,000 villagers, particularly women. Uttarakhand Teacher Plants Over 95,000 Trees, Inspiring Environmental Conservation

In a remarkable display of dedication and passion for the environment, Satendra Singh Bhandari, the principal of a government primary school in Rudra Prayag district, Uttarakhand, has planted over 95,000 trees, defying challenging geographical conditions. Born in 1971, Bhandari developed a deep affinity for trees and nature from a young age. With a resolution to contribute to environmental protection, he embarked on a mission to plant as many trees as possible. Since his appointment as a teacher in 2009, Bhandari has tirelessly worked alongside his students, transforming the school and its surroundings into green havens. Local residents have actively joined his tree-planting initiative, contributing over 7 'nali' of land and numerous fruit-bearing trees. Guardian of Nilgiris: K J Raju's 30-Year Crusade for Environmental Conservation

In a remarkable display of dedication and passion, 73-year-old K J Raju from Nilgiris has been leading a silent revolution to protect the species of his land and create awareness among the younger generation about the importance of environmental conservation. His mission involves removing invasive exotic species and planting natural shola plants to create more water sources across the Nilgiris district. A retired mathematics teacher, Raju embarked on this inspiring journey three decades ago after witnessing the indiscriminate felling of trees for firewood in Kotagiri. Realizing that simply urging people to stop deforestation would not be enough, he took a proactive approach. With the support of state and central government agencies, he provided LPG connections to 100 homes, effectively putting an end to their reliance on firewood. Raju's efforts attracted like-minded individuals, and in 1996, they established the Longwood Shola Watchdog Committee (LWSWDC). Together, they patrol the woods, inviting students and researchers to explore the unique Longwood Shola forest, nestled in the valleys of the southern end of the Western Ghats. The committee has successfully documented every living species in the forest and removed invasive eucalyptus shoots from a significant portion of the 250-acre area. By preserving the natural habitat and promoting the growth of shola forests, Raju aims to secure an additional 40,000 TMC water, as shola plants are known for their water conservation capabilities. The existing forest already serves as a vital water source for 50,000 people in 18 villages surrounding Kotagiri. Recognizing his remarkable work, an England-based organization has granted accreditation to the Longwood Shola forest. Additionally, the Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for developmental projects in the area. Apart from his conservation efforts, Raju has also played a crucial role in educating thousands of children, transforming them into environmentally conscious individuals. Some of his protégés have even gained international recognition as eco activists. Raju's unwavering determination serves as an inspiration, proving that age is no barrier when it comes to making a positive impact on the environment.

As a result, incidents of tree felling have significantly decreased, ensuring a healthy habitat for the park's wildlife, including leopards and African cheetahs. The success of this conservation initiative can be attributed to the round-the-clock vigilance of the Cheetah Mitras, volunteers tasked with protecting the cheetahs. Their dedication has led to the capture and legal action against individuals from other villages involved in illegal tree felling. To address the potential shortage of green fodder for their cattle due to the ban on tree cutting, the villages have taken up extensive cultivation of green fodder plants and grass within their own boundaries. This move has allowed the park's herbivore prey base, crucial for cheetahs, to solely benefit from the natural green resources within KNP. The positive outcomes of this collaborative effort have inspired neighboring villages to follow suit and launch similar initiatives in association with KNP management. He has cultivated cardamom plants for domestic consumption and rears native breeds of cows like Ananganmala kullan and Vilwadhiri, both found in Palakkad district, Krishna Valley from Karnataka, and Kapila, found on the Kerala-Karnataka border, for generating biogas and using their dung as manure. Namboodiri's efforts have not gone unnoticed. A former chief secretary who visited his farm in 2007 advised him to create awareness among the public on the need to conserve traditional plant varieties. Subrat Nath, an engineer and nature lover, has managed to attract sparrows to his balcony by putting up earthen nests and hanging paddy stalks. After seeing success in attracting sparrows to his own balcony, Nath began gifting earthen bird nests to locals to encourage community-level sparrow conservation. He has already gifted around 100 nests to people. Nath believes that the decline in sparrow populations is not solely due to the installation of mobile towers, but also due to the high mortality rate of sparrow hatchlings caused by a lack of food sources in both urban and rural areas. To combat this, Nath has reduced concrete structures around sparrow nesting areas and put up more plants to increase the infestation of worms. Nath’s efforts have shown that with awareness and effort, it is possible to make surroundings safe and habitable for sparrows. Nath’s passion for wildlife photography, horticulture, and his work as an RJ with All India Radio have all contributed to his success in sparrow conservation. According to a report in The New Indian Express, she has won 20 gold medals in national-level competitions and 7 gold medals in international-level competitions. Moreover, Radha has set a record by teaching martial arts to over 5,000 young men and women, ranging from constables to sub-inspectors in the police force. Despite getting married at a young age, Radha continued to practice and teach karate. Her passion for martial art led her to become a 4th Dan black belt holder and a referee, after successfully passing the Karate India Organisation test. In 2010, Meera Chandran had a mission: to reclaim her family's 8-acre land in Kerala that had been overrun by Lantana Camara, an invasive weed that threatened to destroy the local ecology. But instead of taking the easy way out and arranging an earthmover to clear the weeds, Meera got to work. She employed manual labor to cut the weed's roots two to three inches below the ground, preventing them from multiplying. As the weeds were successfully removed, native species were planted to restore the land's natural flora. Meera's work did not stop there. She co-founded the Forest First Samiti, a non-profit dedicated to protecting native plants and restoring degraded lands. Over two years, the Samiti managed to restore one square kilometer of forest land in the Western Ghats with the help of CSR partners. By combining traditional knowledge of local flora and fauna with modern scientific approaches, they were able to bring back endangered, threatened and medicinal plant species. Meera Chandran's story of reclaiming her family's land from the invasive weed, Lantana Camara, is an inspiring example of how one person can make a significant impact on the environment. Despite facing challenges and obstacles, Meera persevered in her mission to restore the natural balance of the ecosystem through the manual removal of the weeds and planting native of species. Saving the Vechur Cow: The Little Cow that Defied Extinction

Sosamma Iype, a celebrated animal conservationist and professor of veterinary science, has been awarded the Padma Shri award in India this year for her pioneering efforts in conserving the native Vechur cow breed. This breed, the smallest of its kind in the world, was facing forcible extinction due to an official policy to promote higher-yielding crossbreeds. Iype hails from Niranam village near Vechur in the Kottayam district, from where the Vechur cow breed was found. She shared with her students at the Kerala Agricultural University’s Veterinary College her fond memories of relishing the milk of the now extinct Vechur cows. The cows were typically 90 cm tall and one meter long, requiring very little food and no special care. The milk was known to be high in fat, and the breed was highly tolerant to heat and resistant to most diseases. Iype dreamt of locating and conserving the surviving Vechur cows, and twelve of her students took up the challenge to scout Vechur and surrounding villages for surviving cows. After a long search, a surviving original Vechur cow was found at a farm in Ullala. This discovery inspired Iype and her students to further their search, and within six months, 29 cows of the native breed were found and brought to the cowshed of the Veterinary College’s Genetics and Breeding Department. The cows were checked to make sure they were not crossbreeds, and the team also spotted a few Vechur bulls which they used for breeding. Today, the Vechur cows have become the icons of India’s native cow conservation movement, with over 6,000 such dwarf cows providing milk and cow dung needs of people across the country. The university also facilitates supply of calves to interested buyers across India. Thanks to Iype’s pioneering efforts, this native breed of cows is now secure and its conservation assured.

From Tech Giant to Eco Warrior: Arun Krishnamurthy’s Journey to Revitalizing India’s Lakes

Arun Krishnamurthy is a true environmental champion, dedicating his days to the cause he's most passionate about - preserving and restoring freshwater lakes and ponds throughout India. As the founder of the Chennai-based Environmentalist Foundation of India (E.F.I), which he launched in 2007, Arun has made it his mission to positively impact the environment. He even left behind his successful corporate career at Google to fully immerse himself in this important work. Over the past 15 years, the organization has successfully restored and revitalized 195 water bodies, with the help of 82,000 volunteers and a team of 20 full-time members. It all started when as a teenager, Arun noticed a pond near his home was deteriorating. He addressed the issue with the village Panchayat who were very supportive and helped in the restoration of the pond. That's when he realized that people want to make a change but do not know how to begin. Steps involved in lake restoration include cleaning the periphery of the lake of physical garbage, identifying and regulating sources of sewage to prevent contamination, dredging and de-silting the lake to remove deposits and strengthen the bunds, planting native species on the lake bund, and fencing the lake to protect aquatic flora and fauna from encroachment and trash accumulation. Arun also visits schools and colleges to spread awareness as he believes that engaging the people and sensitizing them about the importance of environment conservation is crucial and that the youth play a major role in the journey towards conserving the environment. 'Time' magazine named 36-year-old Arun Krishnamurthy as one of their "Next Generation Leaders" for 2022. In 2012, Arun received the Rolex Award for Enterprise for his work on lake restoration in Chennai and was the youngest recipient of the award. He was also mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 'Mann Ki Baat' speech in March 2022.

Kerala Woman Achieves a Rare Feat of Driving a Bus in Dubai!

While most men fail a car test in Dubai, Suja Thankachan has managed to secure a heavy bus license. As a child, she had always wanted to drive heavy vehicles like buses, trucks, tankers as she had watched with admiration when her uncle drove these heavy-duty vehicles and parked them in front of their house. She had made up her mind then, that she would learn to drive them all one day. After almost three decades she is now living her dream as she has now got a driving license for bus and that too in UAE. It took her nine months of hard work and six failed attempts to get the license. She arrived in Dubai three and a half years ago and to make a living, she worked as a conductor of a school bus of Millenium School. She was a very dedicated worker of the school as she assisted faculty in setting up the examination hall and counting question papers. She also helped students to troubleshoot problems in their laptops. Soon, she began taking driving lessons to apply for a license and started training for driving a bus. Suja says that the driving test in the UAE is extremely difficult to crack as if one misses looking at the rearview mirror or overlook even a tiny detail, they will fail that person. That is the reason it took her six attempts to finally clear it. Her new license will put Suja in the driver’s seat of the school bus. She will pick up and drop 53 students from kindergarten to class 12 and do four trips in a day. As word spread of Suja’s extraordinary feat, she has started receiving job offers from other schools, private companies and even the Dubai government. Speaking to The Hindu, she said "I was coming to take special classes for high school students when the tree collapsed. I felt bad, as the children loved its fruit, but there was little I could do," she recalled. However, upon discovering new shoots on the fallen tree, Yashoda Reddy was inspired to take action. The Rescue Mission Yashoda Reddy sought the assistance of the Vata Foundation, an NGO based in Hyderabad that specializes in tree translocation services. P. Uday Krishna, a volunteer from the foundation, recalled the urgency of the situation, noting that they had been informed that the tree was running out of time. Their task was to lift the tree without damaging its only surviving root. The foundation agreed to cover all the costs involved, provided that the students would be able to witness the tree's revival process.. With great care and effort, the team managed to lift and replant the tree. The Seema Chintha tree began to grow new branches in the opposite direction to regain its balance. To commemorate this miraculous recovery, the school started a unique tradition. Every year on July 28, the students tie raksha bandhan to the tree, made of flowers and embedded with messages promoting tree protection. Even after her retirement, Yashoda Reddy visits the tree annually on World Nature Conservation Day. She performs a puja to instill a love for trees in the students, ensuring that the tradition continues. Seven batches of students have graduated since the tradition began, yet it remains a vibrant part of the school's culture. It teaches the students valuable lessons about caring for the environment and the significance of every single tree. The school's commitment to celebrating the tree's revival highlights the powerful connection between the community and nature. Thanks to the efforts of former IAS officer Dr. M K Ranjitsinh, the cheetahs were successfully relocated from Namibia to the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. This historic achievement marks a significant milestone in wildlife conservation and brings hope for the revival of the cheetah population in India. The Visionary Behind the Project Dr. M K Ranjitsinh, an ex-IAS officer and a member of the royal family of Wankaner, Gujarat, has been instrumental in making the dream of reintroducing cheetahs to India a reality. As a young boy and an avid reader of wildlife literature, he was deeply moved by the extinction of cheetahs in India. Driven by his passion for wildlife conservation, he incorporated the cheetah as a protected species in the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972, even when it was already declared extinct. The History of the Cheetah in India Once, cheetahs roamed freely across various regions of India. However, due to over-hunting, loss of prey, and habitat destruction, their population declined rapidly. The last three surviving cheetahs were shot by Maharaja Ramanuj Pratap Singh Deo of Koriya in 1947. The Indian government officially declared the cheetah extinct in 1952. The Journey to Bring Back the Cheetahs In the early 1970s, Dr. M K Ranjitsinh initiated efforts to reintroduce cheetahs to India. He established communication with Iran, where a substantial population of Asiatic cheetahs still existed. However, the negotiations were disrupted by the declaration of Emergency in 1975 and the deposition of the Shah of Iran in 1979. Undeterred by these setbacks, Dr. Ranjitsinh persevered in his mission. Alongside wildlife conservationist Divyabhanusinh Chavda, he worked on developing guidelines and policies for the reintroduction of cheetahs. The "African Cheetah Introduction Project in India" was conceived in 2009, and after a long wait, it received final approval from the Supreme Court in 2020. Kuno National Park: The Chosen Habitat The selection of Kuno National Park as the habitat for the reintroduced cheetahs was carefully considered. In 1981, Dr. Ranjitsinh visited Kuno and recognized its suitability as an ideal area for lions and cheetahs. He declared Kuno as a sanctuary in the same year. Despite earlier attempts to reintroduce cheetahs in the 1980s, the project faced challenges due to the declining cheetah population in Iran. The Bansilalpet stepwell is a 17th-century monument located in the bustling locality of Bansilalpet, Hyderabad, India. Vibha believes that a serene, affectionate, and stress-free environment is necessary for a gentle mind and she decided to implement innovative techniques to impart life skills to her students. With a view to instilling environment conservation values in the students, Vibha conceived the idea of preparing eco-bricks from single-use plastic on the school premises. Speaking to TNIE, Vibha said, “A group of students collects all the used plastics and make eco-bricks daily in school. My plan is to develop eco-parks and develop a sense of environmental conservation among students.” The students collect used plastic bottles from their homes and neighborhood and convert them into eco-bricks in school. Vibha also intends to use the eco-bricks to construct seating areas and tree guards. Future initiatives to establish a recycling facility are also getting steam right now. It is inevitable that the miscreants and criminals who go on to perpetrate numerous crimes were once students. What went wrong with nurturing them, then, is the next question. Whether or not there was a lack of caution and care or prudence? The causes are numerous, and so are the solutions. Vibha believes that the greatest influencers of global change are educators. As we opened the lift, a lady was getting out. He being small rushed in before she could move out. I held the door and waited until she was out. Then I went in and closed the door. In the lift, I told him that he is a big boy now and he should know that he has to wait till the persons in the lift alight. Also when girls and ladies are there in the lift he should open the door and wait for them to get in and out. He listened intently. My neighbour was waiting for the lift and when we reached our floor, he opened the lift for us. Also unlike before, my little young man waited patiently for me to move out and then came out after me. My neighbour also noticed his gesture and smiled. I thanked him and we got in the house. On reaching home I hugged n kissed my son and told him that I noticed his kind deed and I felt very special. As he became a teenager and then a young man, he would treat me royally, open the car door and also hold me protectively when we were out. I love him for being a gentleman. Also by mere observation of his dad, he learnt how to speak and behave when women are around and it's the most beautiful thing of his personality. I am so proud of my young boy Men rarely understand a woman's emotions and if they do they do not give much thought to it. I always felt this should not be the case. I spoke about it to my lad ever since he was a teenager and he not only understands me but knows where to draw the line from being caring to being stern and this I think makes a man perfectly balanced.
