The Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) presented Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, a globally recognized conservation scientist from Assam, with "The Harry Messel Award" for Conservation Leadership on Friday. The prize was given to Dr. Talukdar during the 5th IUCN SSC Leaders' Meeting, which is taking place in Abu Dhabi right now. The interconnected crises of biodiversity and climate change have been discussed by over 3000 conservation specialists. He has received recognition for his leadership in the Species Survival group and his contributions to species protection on the ground. Notably, Talukdar joined the IUCN in 1991 and in 2008 was appointed Chair of the Asian Rhino Specialist Group.

Talukdar took prompt action to organize three meetings of Asian Rhino States, the first of which was organized in cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry in Bandar Lampung. The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, Government of India, organized the second Asian Rhino Range States meeting in New Delhi, India, and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, Government of Nepal, organized the third meeting in Chitwan National Park, Nepal.
The goal of this action was to improve conservation efforts for three Asian rhino species in the states that make up their range. Furthermore, Talukdar is the founder, secretary general, and CEO of Aaranyak, the leading research-driven organization for biodiversity conservation in Guwahati, North East India. Additionally, Indonesian conservation officials have invited him to help manage and conserve critically endangered Javan and Sumatran rhinos.
