The 2023 Our Ocean Conference, held in Panama, has raised an impressive $20 billion in funding to support ocean conservation efforts around the world. Participants made 341 commitments including funding for expanding and improving marine protected areas and biodiversity corridors.
The conference, which brought together leaders and experts from across the globe, focused on a range of issues related to ocean health, including plastic pollution, overfishing, and climate change. Previous Our Ocean conferences have generated more than 1,800 commitments worth approximately $108 billion.
The $20 billion in funding commitments represents a major win for ocean conservation efforts and will go a long way toward protecting the world's oceans and the millions of species that call them home. The conference also provided an opportunity for leaders to share knowledge and best practices, and to collaborate on solutions to the complex challenges facing our oceans.
The conference was a reminder of the urgent need for action to address the many threats facing our oceans. With plastic pollution, overfishing, and climate change all taking a toll on ocean health, the need for bold and decisive action has never been greater.
Moving forward, it will be important to ensure that the funding commitments made at the conference are used effectively and efficiently. By working together and continuing to prioritize ocean conservation, we can protect one of our planet's most precious resources and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
