It is certainly going to be a smooth ride for the first batch of confident young 21 women who are undergoing training to run State Transport buses in Maharashtra

The initiative to induct women drivers in the fleet was taken by the state transport minister Diwakar Raote. His aim is to empower women and he plans to induct 142 women in the second batch of women drivers.

Training and Hard Work

Through sheer determination and hard work, these young women who had earlier never occupied a driver’s seat, now flaunt a learner’s license. They will apply for a permanent license within a month. They have successfully completed theory classes that lasted for six months. They are now undergoing on-road training during which they cover 750 km across different terrain- hilly areas, ghats and forested patches.

Difficulties and Hardships

Every dream and ambition is always replete with its problems and struggles. It took enormous courage for Anusuya Madavi who was not even confident of crossing a street in her town to now drive an ST bus. Pooja Nehtam, another determined young lady, would take her three-month-old child to theory classes. Jyotsna Thakre turned down two marriage proposals as her suitor’s family wouldn't come to terms with her driver's job. Many women had to convince their family to allow them to take up this unusual and demanding job. Sheetal Powar, another learner is of the opinion that if a woman can run a house, then this job shouldn’t be tough.

These dedicated and tough women are an inspiration to many.
