Araku coffee, grown in the hilly regions of Nilgiri alongside black pepper, has a distinctive flavor. There is evidence that coffee was first cultivated in the Araku Valley as early as 1920. Without the use of middlemen, the business is conducted ~  Araku coffee is unique not only in flavor but also in marketing strategy. Plots of this coffee are planted in tiny. Grown on it, coffee cherries can stay on the plant until they develop their full color. It is 100% Arabica coffee because of this farming technique. The fact that the tribespeople themselves handle all aspects of this coffee farm, from production to trade, is another unique quality. It is a business approach that is somewhat cooperative. Because of this, middlemen don't get involved in any part of the process—from sorting, ripening, grinding, and roasting the coffee to packaging and marketing. Since over 90% of Araku's annual coffee production is exported, its demand is evident. Sweden leads in demand, followed by growing interest in the United Arab Emirates, Italy, and Switzerland. Even Paris is starting to enjoy Araku coffee. India exports over Rs 4,000 crore worth of Araku coffee annually. DRY NO MORE: The Miracle Maker of Maharashtra's Villages

In the heart of Maharashtra, a story of strength and determination is unfolding. Dr. Ujjwal Chavan, a Joint Commissioner of Income Tax in Mumbai, has started  a revolutionary water conservation initiative that has transformed the lives of 30,000 farmers across 16 villages.A Village on the BrinkDhamangaon, Chavan's hometown, was once an agricultural community. However, decades of drought and groundwater extraction had pushed the village to the edge. Farmers struggled to make ends meet, and the lack of water had become a constant source of stress. The situation was so dire that one farmer, unable to cope with the pressure, took his own life and this is the case in alomst every rural villiage of maharashtraChavan, who had always been driven to make a difference, was deeply moved by the farmer's tragic death. He knew he had to act. showing his experience as a civil servant and his understanding of the local community, Chavan launched an ambitious water conservation project in Dhamangaon.Chavan spent countless weekends mobilizing villagers, district administrators, and local NGOs to join forces and create a comprehensive water management plan. Despite initial hesitation, the community eventually rallied behind Chavan's vision. Together, they constructed water reservoirs, small dams, and bunds using porous Moorum soil to facilitate rainwater percolation .A New Era of HopeThe results were nothing short of miraculous. Within a year, the village's water storage capacity increased dramatically, and the groundwater level rose significantly. Today, Dhamangaon can store 22 crore liters of water, sufficient to meet the area's needs for 10 months . The success of the project has not only revitalized the village's agriculture but has also brought a sense of pride and ownership among the community.With  the success in Dhamangaon, Chavan replicated the model across 16 other drought-prone villages in Jalgaon district. The outcome has been remarkable: all 16 villages are now drought-free, with 30 reservoirs built in each village, benefiting 30,000 farmers . Chavan's initiative has not only transformed the lives of farmers but has also created a sense of community and cooperation among the villagers.Chavan's vision doesn't stop here. He aims to scale up his water conservation project to 65 villages, creating a storage capacity of 500 crore liters of water. To achieve this ambitious goal, Chavan is training 11 villagers, who will in turn train five villagers from each village. This grassroots approach will not only increase manpower but also foster a sense of ownership and accountability among the community A Tribute to Human StrengthDr. Ujjwal Chavan's story is a proof to the power of human  determination. How Craste is Turning Waste into Wealth for a Sustainable Future!

During his postgraduate studies in chemical engineering at the Imperial College in London, Shubham Singh was struck by a disheartening news report: Delhi had become one of the most polluted cities in the world. This information sparked Singh’s determination to explore the root causes of this environmental crisis, leading him to identify crop burning as a major contributor. Singh noted that crop burning is a significant problem in India, particularly in the northern regions. He cited the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, which reported that the country generates an average of 500 million tonnes (MT) of crop waste annually, compared to the global plastic waste generation of 300 MT each year. With a research background in sustainable materials, Singh saw crop waste as a crucial opportunity and became dedicated to the idea of utilizing it. The Inception of Craste In 2017, after winning a grant from the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), Singh returned to Pune with a clear mission. By 2018, he and his sister, Himansha Singh, had founded Craste, a company dedicated to transforming agricultural waste into valuable products. Craste utilizes waste from rice, millet, sugarcane, and barley to produce boards for furniture, construction, and sustainable packaging materials as alternatives to plastic. The company's first manufacturing hub in Morena, near Gwalior, has already made a significant market impact. Singh noted that they are ramping up and expect to generate good revenue this fiscal year. Transforming Challenges into Opportunities Singh explained that at Craste, their vision is to convert an environmental challenge into a socio-economic opportunity. He mentioned that they provide high-quality sustainable packaging products and eco-friendly particle boards crafted from crop waste. According to him, for each particle-board panel measuring 8ft x 4ft and 18mm thickness, they anticipate reducing 30kg of CO2 emissions. Support for Craste’s innovative approach has poured in from various organizations, including the Pune International Centre and Swissnex. The company is expanding its footprint, planning to establish 10 small factories across India and set up an office in Bengaluru. At 19, he founded Gramiksha, a non-profit organization focused on educating underprivileged rural children. “That motivated him to work towards society, especially in rural communities. Within two years, Gramiksha was operating in six cities. I realized that there was no point cribbing on social media about the country’s problems. It is better to go out and be a solution provider,” Singh reflects. Understanding the Farmer’s Plight Singh’s journey with Craste included hours of research at the Venture Centre in Pune, trying to understand why farmers resorted to burning crop stubble. He mentioned that farmers have very limited time, only 15 to 20 days, to handle the stubble. According to him, burning is the most cost-effective and quickest method for them, as the fire spreads naturally and avoids labor costs. He added that using machinery to clear the stubble would incur hourly labor and rental expenses. Recognizing the inefficiencies in the biofuel industry, Singh aimed to create high-value products that would offer farmers better margins without exorbitant costs. Today, Craste’s manufacturing process has garnered interest from countries with large agrarian societies, such as Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines. How an Eighth-Grader is Preserving Native Seeds for a Sustainable Future

At a young age, Harshita Priyadarshini Mohanty from Koraput district, Odisha, has become a symbol of hope for preserving indigenous seed varieties. A class eight student at Prakash Vidyalaya in Jeypore, Harshita has meticulously built a seed bank boasting over 180 varieties of indigenous paddy and more than 80 types of millet seeds, earning her the title of 'seed girl'.  Harshita's journey began in 2020, inspired by Padma Shri Kamala Pujari, a renowned seed conservationist from her district. Kamala Pujari gifted her four varieties of paddy seeds, including the GI-tagged Koraput Kalajeera. This act sparked Harshita's mission to preserve vanishing native seeds for future generations. She realized that native seeds should be preserved for their local adaptability, climate resilience, and nutritional richness. The seed bank includes varieties like Kalabati (black rice) and Tulsi Bhog (high-fiber rice), which Harshita distributes to farmers for free. Her work goes beyond collection; she actively promotes organic farming. Harshita formed a group of 15 youngsters to advocate for organic farming in five villages, supported by the NGO 'Ekata'.  Harshita's dedication to seed conservation involves direct engagement with farmers. She travels to fields across Jeypore, Boipariguda, Kundra, and Borrigumma blocks to collect seeds. Her efforts have been widely recognized, leading to farmers eagerly sharing their indigenous seeds with her. Harshita stores these seeds in plastic containers and earthen pots, using neem tablets as a natural preservative, maintaining the traditional methods used for centuries. Harshita's efforts have garnered significant recognition. In January 2024, she was felicitated as ‘Krushak Ratna’. She also topped the virtual national competition ‘Idea Youngsters,’ securing a cash prize for highlighting traditional seeds and organic farming. Harshita's impact extends beyond local communities. She was invited to the International Millet Convention in Bhubaneswar and the Global Symposium on Farmers' Rights in Delhi. Here, she displayed her seed collection and discussed conservation methods, earning praise from notable figures like Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, former WHO chief scientist. Beyond seed conservation, Harshita has a passion for collecting currencies and postage stamps from around the world, influenced by her grandfather. She also excels academically, scoring over 90 percent in her examinations. Harshita Priyadarshini Mohanty exemplifies how young individuals can make significant contributions to environmental conservation. Her dedication to preserving indigenous seeds and promoting organic farming sets a new standard for eco-friendly practices in agriculture.

'Nambie Jessica Marak' from Meghalaya : Epic Success Story

Her Back Story & Initiative Streamlined  : Nambie's introduction to the kitchen began when she was a child in Shillong when her mother encouraged the children to prepare their meals. When Nambie Jessica Marak relocated to Chennai to further her education, she missed home food. She was from Upper Rangsa, a village in Meghalaya's West Khasi Hills. While she enjoyed the dosas, idlis, and biryanis, she craved her comfort food, which was a country chicken soup with fiddlehead ferns. What bothered her the most was the stereotype of Northeast culture and food. She looked for YouTube channels to teach her friends about the complexities of her food. Finding that the majority of the channels were in local languages, she decided to start her own in 2015 called 'Eat Your Kappa' to document Northeastern food. Even after impressing top chefs, including British Chef Marco Pierre White, she admits she's "not so good at cooking!" She found time for her YouTube videos while working as an assistant professor in a college. During her vacations, she would return home and shoot videos every day. Since her village did not have internet access, she would edit and upload the videos after returning to Chennai. On her channel, she dispels myths about Northeastern cuisine. According to her, people frequently believe it is all about "eating bizarre food" or "eating anything that moves.". Added Stepping Stones Of Life alongside:  While her YouTube channel was thriving, she was forced to return home due to her mother's illness. She packed her belongings and relocated to Upper Rangsa with her infant daughter in 2019. A few months later, her husband, who was also a teacher, packed his belongings, quit his job, and followed in her footsteps. Since they were the two most educated people in the entire village of 150 people, they were given the opportunity to effect change when a private school in the neighboring village was about to close. Nambie wholeheartedly embraced this responsibility and devoted her time to teaching as well. During all this lifetime of work she is often questioned : Teaching or Cooking?  Addressing  the question: ‘I have always been connected to food and I really enjoy being around children. You learn something new in both teaching and cooking. Every day is a new day in the kitchen as well as the classroom. I love it. Why would I choose between the two?’ laughs Nambie.

In a remarkable feat, a 14-year-old student from Government High School in Purohitpur, Odisha, has been lauded for her groundbreaking research on crop rotation and pulse cultivation. Anapurna Parida's study has garnered acclaim at the State Level Children's Science Congress and secured her a spot at the upcoming National Children's Science Congress (NCSC). Parida's research aimed to raise awareness among local farmers about the benefits of crop rotation and pulse cultivation. Her study emphasized the crucial role pulses play in providing nitrogen to the soil and reducing diseases in humans. Recognizing the lack of knowledge about these practices among farmers, Parida conducted a comprehensive case study in Chandura village under the Taradapada panchayat in Jagatsinghpur block. Through engaging with 160 families in Chandura village, Parida assessed their understanding of crop rotation, pulse cultivation, soil testing, and scientific cultivation methods. Shockingly, she found that only 33% of lands were utilized for pulse cultivation, with a mere 40% of farmers actively engaging in the practice. The majority of farmers lacked knowledge about crop rotation methods and the importance of soil testing. Parida not only raised awareness about these issues but also provided farmers with insights on quality production, soil testing, and the adoption of crop rotation methods to enhance soil quality. Her exceptional presentation at the State-Level Children's Science Congress earned her a well-deserved spot at the prestigious National Children's Science Congress, starting from December 27. Anjan Kumar Sahoo, Parida's science teacher and guide, commended her innovative study, stating that her research on cultivating pulses through rotation to improve soil quality and combat diseases has earned her recognition at the state level. Parida's inspiration for this study stems from her family members, including her mother, a school teacher, her father, an electrician, and her retired teacher grandfather.

Transforming Folk Art Into a Source of Livelihood Through Aipan

Meenakshi Khati, a 24-year-old history graduate from Ramnagar town in Uttarakhand, is making a significant impact by reviving and promoting the ancient art of Aipan in the Kumaon region. Known as the 'Aipan Girl,' Meenakshi has transformed this traditional folk art into a source of livelihood for thousands of people. Aipan, a form of art believed to invoke divine power and bring good fortune while preventing evil, is created using saffron-red mud color called 'geru' collected from forests and rice starch known as 'Biswar' paste. Meenakshi's fascination with Aipan started at a young age when she observed her family creating intricate designs on special occasions. Driven by her passion, Meenakshi dedicated three years to studying the history and origin of Aipan, collaborating with renowned historians and scholars. She discovered that Aipan art has its roots in the Chand dynasty of the 8th century. With the aim of popularizing the art among youngsters and linking it to employment, Meenakshi launched the 'Meenakriti - The Aipan Project' in December 2019. Through offline and online training programs, she has empowered over 8,000 trainers, including women self-help groups, in Uttarakhand and other parts of the country. The Uttarakhand government is currently celebrating a fortnight of Aipan Art, showcasing the vibrant red-colored Aipan designs through wall paintings, greeting cards, and nameplate designs. Meenakshi's vision and achievements have elevated Aipan art to new heights, ensuring its continued legacy and cultural significance.

Farmers in Idukki's High-Range Tap Wild Tamarind for Food Security

In a remarkable display of resourcefulness, farmers in Idukki's high-range region have found a unique way to put food on their tables by tapping into the abundance of wild tamarind trees. This indigenous variety of tamarind, known for its higher sour content and larger size, has become a valuable asset for the local community. The village of Pulikathadam, located nearly 10km from Moolamattom town, in Kerala, has been blessed with naturally growing tamarind trees that have been providing a bountiful harvest for generations. These trees, some of which are over a century old, have become an integral part of the village's identity. Raveendran T S, an early settler and farmer, shared his experience of arriving in Pulikathadam in 1964 and discovering the abundance of Malabar tamarind trees. These trees had grown naturally over time from fallen seeds, requiring no cultivation. Today, Raveendran harvests around 600kg of tamarind annually from his 250 trees. The farmers in this region have turned the wild tamarind into a source of income by smoke-drying the harvested fruits and selling them to local traders from Moolamattom. The tamarind is then distributed outside the district and even sold to pharmaceutical companies for medicinal preparations. The resilient nature of dried tamarind allows farmers to store it for years, providing a safety net during times of financial strain or when prices soar. The prices of tamarind have seen a rise this year, reaching up to 180/kg compared to 160-170/kg last year. The wild tamarind trees of Pulikathadam not only contribute to the farmers' livelihoods but also serve as a testament to the region's rich biodiversity. With their sustainable agricultural practices, these farmers are ensuring food security while preserving the natural resources of their community.

Not stopping there, Hemoprova demonstrated her mastery by weaving the Bhagavad Gita in English onto a 280-foot-long and 2-foot-wide piece of cloth. She also skillfully wove the Gunamala, a significant literary work by Assamese Saint Srimanta Shankardev, incorporating both the Assamese and translated Hindi and English versions. Her expertise extends to using beads to craft unique designs in cotton and silk Gamocha, a departure from the usual motifs seen in the region. Recognized by numerous awards and accolades, including the Assam Gaurav award and 'Handloom and Textile Award' by the state government, Hemoprova Chutia's weaving skills transcend the conventional, leaving an indelible mark on the world of art and culture. Gujarat's Tribal Women Pave the Way to Multi-Crore Agriculture Triumph!

A group of semi-literate tribal women from Gujarat's Dang district has created a multi-crore enterprise, the Farmers Producer Organisation (FPO). The FPO has provided employment to scores of women, transforming their lives and defying societal expectations. Due to the limited market, women farmers sold their harvest individually, resulting in a stagnant financial condition. To overcome this, the voluntary organization, Aga Khan Village Support Programme (India) (AKRSPI), assembled a collective of tribal women. The aim was to organize their agricultural operations, enabling them to secure better prices for their produce, increasing their decision-making influence, and enhancing their economic status. Through the combined efforts of these determined women, a total of 1,170 shareholders have been officially registered as of January 2023. The organization's female workforce has achieved a modest turnover of about Rs 1.85 crore this year (2022-23), mainly through the sale of agricultural seeds, farming equipment, organic medicines, fish seeds, poultry feed, and various other products. Empowered with knowledge of their rights, these remarkable women have taken charge of their communities, addressing essential issues such as access to clean water, road infrastructure, and sanitation facilities through the platform of panchayats. The success of the FPO has spread to the district level, and farmers from Maharashtra's border villages also come to get these seeds at low costs. The initiative has helped these women to conveniently obtain seeds at a reasonable price by simply making a phone call and negotiating from the comfort of their homes. The FPO has not only improved the economic status of the women but a has also empowered them to address community issues and create positive change.

Her journey began on International Women's Day, March 8, 2023, from Mumbai's Gateway of India. Ramabai plans to traverse about 100,000 kilometers through 20-30 countries, covering roughly 40 countries across six continents, before returning to India on March 8, 2024. Her route includes several G20 countries and some of the world's most beautiful cities. Ramila Latpate's mission is to showcase the unique products and traditions of Maharashtra and promote Indian culture everywhere she goes. She believes that her journey will inspire young women to dream big and reach for the stars. Ramabai is not only an entrepreneur and pilot, but so a brave and adventurous woman who is determined to prove that anything is possible if you have the courage and determination to pursue your dreams. Her journey will take her through some of the world's most challenging terrains, including deserts, mountains, and jungles, where she will have to rely on her map-reading skills and survival instincts to stay safe. Reviving Culture, One Stitch at a Time: Meet the Woman Bringing Gujjar Attire Back to Life in Kashmir

In the northern region of Kashmir, a young woman is single-handedly reviving a dying culture of traditional Gujjar attire. Shahida Khanum, a graduate from the remote area of Bandipora, has opened a centre in Aragam village to teach young girls the art of designing, stitching, and embroidering the traditional Gujjar attire.  The Gujjar and Bakerwal communities make up a significant portion of Jammu and Kashmir's multi-ethnic population, with their own unique culture of clothing, food, and lifestyle. However, in recent decades, the younger generation has become enamored with modern clothing, leading to a decline in traditional attire's popularity. With her center, Khanum is determined to preserve and promote the traditional Gujjar attire culture among the young Gujjar population. At her center, over fifty young girls are being trained in stitching, designing, and knitting traditional Gujjar attire. The center offers these girls not only the opportunity to revive their culture but also to earn a livelihood. The traditional caps worn by Gujjar women, known as laska, are entirely different from common skullcaps, and Khanum is training these young girls to stitch and embroider them.  While Khanum has yet to receive financial assistance from the government, she is hopeful that the Jammu and Kashmir Khadi and Village Industries Board (KVIB) will provide financial aid to expand her center and train more tribal women. Khanum's initiative is an inspiring example of how individuals can take up the task of preserving and promoting their cultural heritage, even in the absence of significant institutional support.

The Power of Silk: Propelling People Towards Success

Kabita Singh's story is a remarkable one of determination and resilience. In 2014, she decided to take up tasar sericulture (silk farming) in the face of opposition from her husband, her village, and the panchayat. Despite the ostracism, Kabita persevered and today, her village of Shyamnagar has 44 families engaged in silk farming, thanks to her efforts.  Kabita's work involves training women in tasar sericulture, rearing tasar larvae, and managing a Basic Seed Production Unit, where parental seed cocoons are reared. This work has enabled Kabita to become financially secure, as well as to gain independence and self-confidence. Last year, she earned Rs25,000 from the sale of cocoons, and she also earns Rs7,500 per month for her work in the seed unit and in training sessions. In addition, she earns Rs20,000 from paddy and watermelon cultivation on her land.  The success of Kabita's efforts is also evident in the work of Pradan, an NGO that has been linking women to sericulture since 1998. Pradan's efforts have brought economic prosperity to around 50,000 families in five states of West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Bihar. To ensure further success, Pradan has established the Tasar Development Foundation, which oversees the operations of the six producer organizations linked to it.  Kabita Singh's story is an inspiring one of grit and determination in the face of opposition. She has managed to break traditional stereotypes and carve out an independent life for herself, while being of great benefit to the community. Her story is a testament to the power of courage and hard work.

Such produce was equally nutritious, yet discarded as they didn’t appeal to the eyes. Aditi decided to reduce such food wastage by procuring the discarded agricultural produce and converting it into nutritious and delicious food. Thus Platano Foods, a sustainable food solutions startup was conceived by Aditi. Innovative And Healthy Food Products The startup collects unripe bananas that are rejected by cold storage facilities. After conducting quality checks, the bananas are converted into raw banana flour which is extremely nutritious and has a good shelf life. The startup later introduced delicious and nutritious cookies by mixing the banana flour with traditional millets and seeds. These cookies are free from preservatives, trans fats and refined flour making it a hit among the health-conscious people. Aditi’s efforts have borne fruits as her major clients include institutions, hotels, corporate offices, retail places, events, and online sales. In the heart of Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, where generations of farmers have grappled with economic distress, a quiet revolution is taking root. Krushi Sarathi, a socio-commercial startup founded by a farmer’s son, is rewriting the script of rural agriculture. By blending technology, market access, and grassroots empowerment, this initiative is turning farming into a sustainable and profitable profession, giving thousands of farmers the hope of a debt-free future.   A Vision Born from Struggle Parashram Akhare, a 28-year-old electrical engineer from Mohadari village, knows the struggles of farming life firsthand. He grew up watching his father and fellow farmers struggle against a system that left them powerless—burdened by overpriced agricultural inputs, restricted market access, and mounting debt.Determined to make a difference, Akhare pursued his education and secured a stable job in Navi Mumbai. Yet, even as he settled into urban life, the plight of his community never left him. The turning point came during the 2020 lockdown when he realized that despite skyrocketing vegetable prices in cities, farmers in his village were forced to discard their produce due to lack of access to markets.  “That’s when it hit me, farmers are not poor because they lack effort, but because they lack access,” he recalls. Moved by this realization, he began helping local farmers transport their produce directly to urban consumers. What started as an informal effort soon laid the foundation for Krushi Sarathi.  Sowing the Seeds of Change  Krushi Sarathi, meaning "the farmer’s charioteer," was born to bridge the gaps that keep farmers trapped in cycles of debt. The startup operates both online and offline, ensuring that farmers have access to essential resources without middlemen exploiting them. With the Krushi Sarathi mobile app and website, farmers can compare prices, order fertilizers, pesticides, and other essentials, and have them delivered within 24 hours. The platform also connects them to markets, eliminating unfair pricing structures that often work against them.  But technology alone isn’t the answer, education and human connection are equally vital. That’s why Krushi Sarathi has built a strong grassroots network of taluka coordinators who provide on-ground support, helping farmers navigate the digital platform while also offering guidance on sustainable farming practices.  Krushi Sarathi has touched the lives of over 30,000 farmers in Vidarbha and created employment for 180 individuals in regions where job opportunities are scarce. The startup now boasts an annual turnover of ₹5 crore, with projections to double its revenue this year.  The Maharashtra Government recognized this transformative work, awarding Krushi Sarathi the ‘Best Startup Award for Agriculture’ in 2022. But Akhare’s vision goes beyond financial success. “Farming should be a profession of pride, not desperation. Our farmers deserve the same dignity and opportunities as any other professionals,” he says.  Growing into the Future  Krushi Sarathi is not stopping here. The startup is expanding into soil testing, contract farming, biochar production, and animal feed to make farming more resilient and profitable. One of its most ambitious upcoming initiatives is Krushi Sakhi, a program that aims to integrate women into farming decision-making, acknowledging and strengthening their crucial role in agriculture.  “We need to recognize that women are the backbone of farming. Through Krushi Sakhi, we want to equip them with the knowledge and authority to shape their agricultural futures,” Akhare shares.  Additionally, the company is promoting group farming and alternative crop cultivation to ensure farmers have stable incomes throughout the year, rather than relying on seasonal earnings that often lead to financial uncertainty.   Like any revolution, Krushi Sarathi’s journey hasn’t been easy. Breaking the monopoly of local shopkeepers, shifting deep-rooted mindsets, and securing funding posed significant challenges. “Many farmers have been conditioned to believe that debt is just part of farming life. Changing that belief has been the hardest battle,” Akhare admits.  But the successes have made the struggle worth it. “Seeing farmers gain confidence, knowing that they now have control over their earnings, that’s what keeps me going,” he says.  A Movement, Not Just a Startup  Krushi Sarathi is proving that farming is not a profession of helplessness but one of immense potential. It’s not just about higher profits; it’s about restoring hope, dignity, and independence to those who feed the nation.  With a projected turnover of ₹10 crore, Krushi Sarathi is more than a business but it’s a movement that’s breaking the cycle of debt and despair. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah to Consider Making Tulu the State's Second Language

In a significant development, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has expressed his willingness to address the demands of the people from coastal Karnataka to recognize Tulu as the second language of the state.  During the inauguration of the Bengaluru Kambala Samithi event, Siddaramaiah commended the efforts of the Samithi in bringing the traditional buffalo race, Kambala, to Bengaluru. Taking a dig at former Kannada and culture minister Sunil Kumar, the CM highlighted the need to discuss Tulu's status as a second language with the present minister.  Although initially skeptical about hosting Kambala in Bengaluru due to its association with the coastal region, Siddaramaiah acknowledged the city's significant population from coastal Karnataka. Impressed by the large turnout, he encouraged the organizers to make the event an annual fixture in November or December. While there have been calls to ban Kambala and Jallikattu, the CM stated that his government has previously supported these traditional races. To further support Kambala, the government has announced a financial grant of Rs 1 crore, with an immediate release of Rs 5 lakh. Additionally, the government will allocate a plot in Bengaluru as requested by the Samithi for hosting cultural events. Speaker UT Khader also appealed to the CM to grant recognition to Tulu. He highlighted the efforts of Puttur MLA Ashok Rai in defending Kambala against animal welfare organizations. The Kinnauri tribe, which makes up most of the inhabitants in the region, has a distinct culture influenced by Hindu, Buddhist, and indigenous beliefs and practices. The Hangrang Rinchen Buddhist Cultural Heritage Foundation, an association that takes all decisions relating to the tribe's culture and traditions, has been instrumental in leading the charge to preserve their heritage. Leaders of other gram panchayats have also agreed to pass similar resolutions in their villages. Although the wedding bans lack legal authority, the resolution represents a significant stride towards safeguarding the Kinnauri tribe's distinctive culture. Jagat Singh Negi, the Himachal Pradesh tribal development and revenue minister, has endorsed the resolution and underscored the importance of preserving the Kinnauri culture's valuable aspects. Flying Crops: Krishi Udan Scheme 2.0 Promotes Perishable Agricultural Produce Transportation

In a move to give a thrust to agriculture, the central government plans to add 21 more airports under the Krishi Udan scheme to facilitate faster movement of agricultural produce in northeastern, hilly and tribal regions. The scheme has already enabled the transportation of perishable agricultural products like lemon, jackfruit, and grapes from northeastern states to other parts of India, as well as countries like Germany, the UK, Singapore, and the Philippines.  The Airports Authority of India provides several waivers, including landing charges, parking charges, and route navigation facility charges to cargo aircraft to promote the transportation of perishable agricultural produce from these regions under the Krishi Udan scheme 2.0, launched in October 2021.  The usage of drones in the agriculture sector is also gaining importance, beyond just spraying pesticides to seeding, carrying out surveys, and other areas. The government has released standard operating procedures for the use of drones in pesticide and nutrient application, and there are reports of farmers saving around 20% of their cost of application and reduction in health hazards associated with manual spraying. During the G20 summit, India plans to come out with a new roadmap for the development of agriculture. The summit is discussing food security and nutrition, sustainable agriculture, inclusive agricultural value chains, food supply systems, and digitization of agriculture. These efforts have the potential to transform the agricultural landscape of the country and provide a better future for farmers and rural communities, creating new opportunities for growth and development.

World’s First Palm Leaf Manuscript Museum Is a Treasure Trove of History and Culture

The world's first palm leaf manuscript museum which opened in Kerala last week is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region through its collection of ancient palm leaf manuscripts. Palm leaf manuscripts are texts that have been inscribed on the dried fronds of the talipot palm, which is native to India and Southeast Asia. These manuscripts have been used for centuries to record a wide range of information, including religious texts, historical chronicles, scientific treatises, and literary works. Accounts of the famous Battle of Colachel, in which the brave Travancore monarch Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma (1729–58) fought the Dutch East India Company at Colachel, 20 kilometers northwest of Kanyakumari in present-day Tamil Nadu, are among the manuscripts kept at the museum. With this victory in 1741, Dutch expansion in India came to a halt, and Marthanda Varma's Travancore became the first Asian kingdom to thwart any European power's plans for expansion. Located in Thiruvananthapuram, the museum, which opened last week, contains 187 manuscripts that tell stories totally based on primary sources. These are records that were written on palm leaves that had been treated and cured and were consigned to the corners of the records rooms. After painstakingly sorting through a large stock of haphazardly stored 1.5 crore palm-leaf records from all around the state, the archival material for the first phase was selected. With its eight galleries that include movies and information-gathering QR code technologies, the facility is enticing both general visitors and specialized scholars. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage for future generations to learn from and enjoy, nd is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the history and culture of southern India.

The Ancient Indian Natural Farming Technique Gets a Boost As Central Government Dedicates Rs 1,584 Crore Towards It

The lack of organic content in soil is a serious concern for all. The quality of soil is depleting and in turn, this brings down the nutritional value of food. Chemical farming has led to the erosion of soil and drastic measures are needed to save it. On the occasion of World Soil Day and  Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a conference was held with Niti Ayog in collaboration with GIZ affiliated with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany. Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar presided as the chief guest and addressed the importance of soil conservation. As a remedy for depleting soil, Shri Tomar said that it was high time farmers switched to natural farming. He stated that the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Shri Modi, is collaborating with the States to promote natural farming. According to him, the Natural Farming System is a time-honored method of farming that farmers have utilized for centuries. Back then, people also knew how to coexist peacefully with nature. Numerous improvements have been made to support natural farming in states like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, etc. Over the past year, 4.78 lakh extra hectares of land have been converted to natural farming in 17 States. The National Mission on Natural Farming was approved by the Central Government as a separate program with a budget of Rs. 1,584 crores to promote natural farming. This measure will go a long way in ensuring better soil health which in turn will benefit mankind and future generations.

For the past 40 years, Accion Fraterna(AF) Ecology Centre, a non-governmental organization has been addressing the problems and bringing about effective solutions for dryland farmers in 230 villages of the Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh. Recently, it won recognition from the FICCI for running the ‘Best Outstanding Sustainable Agriculture Development Program in the country. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar presented the award to AF Ecology Centre Director Y.V. Malla Reddy who received it in New Delhi on behalf of the organization  He also praised the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry(FICCI) for recognizing their efforts to promote the 'Navadhanya' idea. The Navadhanya concept entails growing a variety of crops in one location so that the farmer's family can get at least one or two crops to harvest throughout the year. Reddy stated that the organization works with 30,000 homes of tiny, marginal rainfed producers and women who are employed as landless laborers. The primary problem in the Anantapur area is the "vulnerability of rural livelihoods" as a result of repeated and prolonged droughts, which are made worse by climate change. According to Mr. Malla Reddy, rainfed farming is in trouble because farmers are unable to adjust to drought-related climate changes, which results in failed crops, debt, and distress. The organization has been striving to bring relief to such farmers through sustainability measures.

In a Groundbreaking Development, Hybrid High-Yielding Rice That Needs To Be Sown Only Once in Two Years Can Be a Solution to Stubble Burning

Researchers have developed a long-lived perennial rice that is essentially a type of paddy that allows farmers to sow just once while permitting up to eight harvests without reducing output – that's roughly two years of freedom from crop plantation. By crossing a domestic annual rice from Asia with a wild perennial rice from Africa, researchers have created this perennial rice. By using contemporary genetic technologies to expedite the process, the team discovered a promising hybrid in 2007, set up extensive field trials in 2016, and launched PR23, the first commercial variety of perennial rice, in 2018. Perennial rice has several benefits over ordinary rice. For instance, farmers that grew perennial rice used about 60% less labor and spent half as much on seed, fertilizer, and other inputs because they didn't have to plant every season. There is excitement about introducing this variety in India as apart from its regular benefits, this rice can play a major role in curbing air pollution in Northern India where stubble burning is a major issue. Due to its detrimental effects on air quality, human health, and the environment as a whole, stubble burning is hindering states like Punjab, which are renowned for the types of rice they produce and the agricultural techniques they use. Farmers would thus be able to harvest the crop numerous times, and their requirement to burn the stubble after harvest would be substantially lessened if this high-yielding, long-lived perennial paddy could replace the current types with a few simple alterations, thus paving the way to sustainable agriculture.

As demand for honey grows in international markets, apiculture, the care and management of bees for their honey and wax is gradually being adopted by many as a profession. An integrated honey beekeeping centre will soon be set up in Meghalaya to meet the growing demand for honey. Bee Mission The National Bee Board has decided to open a honey bee development centre in Meghalaya, the first of its kind in the Northeast to meet the growing popular demand for local honey in Europe and certain South Asian countries. An interactive programme presided by the Director of National Bee Board Dr BL Sarawat was held on Tuesday where it was disclosed that Rs 10 crore has been earmarked for this proposed bee development centre. Scientific Beekeeping methods The State Additional Chief Secretary, K N Kumar stressed the need to adopt scientific methods for beekeeping. He said that even with the traditional methods of beekeeping, their produce has become very popular overseas. So the farmers should adopt scientific methods to increase their yield and harness the potential of bee market. There are 5 lakh bee colonies in Meghalaya and with 7000 trained farmers Kumar expects this bee mission to be very successful. The bee population all over the world has been dwindling of late and it has been proved that if the bee population becomes extinct, life on the planet will be wiped out in four years. So bee development centres are also helpful to maintain and conserve the bee population.

Laboratories to detect pesticides in vegetables

The Agriculture Department in Kerala is all set to open four high tech laboratories in the state to detect the presence of dangerous pesticides in vegetables. Addressing a press conference on Monday, minister for agriculture, V S Sunilkumar said that the presence of dangerous chemicals has been detected in vegetables coming from other states. Some farmers also illegally bring banned pesticides from other states. He added that nowadays, new generation pesticides are used and it is essential to study their composition and gravity of danger. Currently, the pesticide testing is conducted at the National Institute of Plant Health Management, Hyderabad which takes time. Therefore, new laboratories are slated to come up in Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode and Kasaragod so that the testing can be completed in three hours. The Cashew Development Corporation's laboratory in Kollam will also lend a hand for this purpose. The minister also said that it is important for Kerala to be self-sufficient in vegetables. Currently, there is a requirement of  20 lakh tonnes of vegetables, of which only 7.5 tonnes are produced here. The department has organized ‘A tray of vegetables for Onam' scheme, wherein five types of vegetable seeds are distributed among 63 lakh households with the aim to stop depending on other states for vegetables.

Indian Museum in Kolkata, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya in Mumbai are the museums which have contributed to the collections presented in the exhibition. Worldwide almost 180 museums have contributed in the museum. Coming from various regions in the country, few traditional handloom weaves from Nagaland, which is preserved, are also a part of the exhibition.  The exhibition also includes cloth worn by high status Naga warriors after head hunting. The online literature about this exhibition informs that the painted white band in the middle of the cloth is believed to signify the number of heads that are taken by the warrior.  Amit Sood, director of Google Arts & Culture said, "Everyone is invited to browse through the exhibition and learn the story behind what they wear. You may be surprised to find out that your jeans or the black dress in your wardrobe have a centuries-old story.”

Ghaat Sandhya- a platform to showcase talent

Ghaat Sandhya, an event that was introduced along the lines of Subah-e-Banaras, has become popular and many budding artists are participating in it to showcase their talent. Earlier the Subah-e-Banaras was started which is now nearing its 1000 th day. As it was a grand success, the district cultural committee introduced Ghaat Sandhya from February 1. The event is usually held in the evening and so far, more than 75 dancers, including foreign nationals, have performed at the evening event. Many photographers and painters have displayed their art at the otherwise not-so-popular Reeva and Ganga Mahal ghats. On Monday, which was the 69th evening Odissi danseuse Amrita Adhikary gave a hour long performance. Local artist Ani Tripathi held a photography exhibition which drew large crowds. Earlier on Saturday, a splendid performance was given by Rafaela Tanner, who was first to introduce Bollywood culture to Switzerland. This is the brainchild of Chief development officer Pulkit Khare. He said that the city has iconic ghats, but most of them lie neglected and remain filthy. Ghat Sandhya is an attempt to provide a platform for upcoming artists in all classical and semi-classical dance forms, promoting tourism, maintaining these ghats and providing a beautiful evening experience to the denizens. He said that Ghaat Sandhya is a larger and a different version of Subah-e-Banaras.

Art & Culture SSC students to get extra 25 marks

With the new rule from this year that has announced extra marks to the SSC students those who excel in art and culture have to remember April 20 as a deadline. Those students have done their bit in Art and Culture fields can get their certification from 48 organization shortlisted by the state government and submit documents to their school before April 20. The school then needs to submit the completed application of the students to the state Board before April 30. Previously this month, the state education department had announced this scheme of extra 25 marks to the students who excelled in the field of art, culture and folk arts. Before this rule was going to be validated from the year 2018 but later the state government decided to start this rule from this year itself. Before such rule was allowed only for those students who excel in sports. Taking into consideration that not all students are good at sports and also students in cultural field represent the district, state and national in various competitions and festival, this decision was taken. This will surely help and motivate students to take up art and culture and excel in the field. This decision has been taken to motivate students to do well in extra-curricular activities and by this there will be also a continuous support from student’s parents.

Breaking Free: Challenging Gender Stereotypes and Embracing Cultural Diversity

Girls' self-esteem, ambition, and expectations are the first victims of gender stereotypes. Therefore, eradicating clichés and their associated behaviors should be a priority for any society and should begin in schools I believe. Some initiatives advocate introducing female role models by exploring various cultures and lifestyles around the globe. What Is a Gender Stereotype and What Consequences Does It Have ~ According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), a gender stereotype "is a generalized view or preconception about attributes, or characteristics that are or ought to be possessed by women and men or the roles that are or should be performed by men and women". A gender stereotype is therefore harmful when it limits the capacity of women and men to develop their personal attributes or professional skills and to make decisions about their lives and plans. Gender stereotypes affect girls around the world regardless of their country's level of development and are encouraged by society at large, from parents to teachers. This is one of the main conclusions of the WHO/John Hopkins University Global Early Adolescent Study. Although some may consider this trivial, it has very detrimental consequences for girls from a very early age reducing their aspirations and limiting their career options.  Eastern nations, particularly those on the Indian subcontinent, evolved from an agrarian-feudalistic civilization ( Feudalism, also known as the feudal system, was a combination of legal, economic, military, cultural, and political customs that flourished in the medieval period). These areas have historically valued the commercialization of means of production. Feudalism allows men and those in authority to openly take product and excess from direct producers. Such cultures subjugate those who are economically disadvantaged and/or physically weak, from serfs to women and children, resulting in uneven economic relations and social reproduction and preparing the way for oppressively gendered hierarchies. Historically, this patriarchal hegemony may be witnessed in the Middle East, where fathers, brothers, or spouses have paramount control over women. ~ This ideological paradigm throws all caring obligations on women's shoulders, resulting in an unequal cycle of societal division. Understanding The Role of Culture in Gender Stereotyping ~  It is obvious that a gendered approach to care is rooted in economic power dynamics, supported by the imposition of prejudiced belief systems, restrictive mindsets, and traditions as understood by stakeholders - in other words, those in power. In terms of economic development, such a social reproduction method has a devastating impact. Disempowering women by devaluing their labor, whether it is care or household work, has serious consequences for development, general quality of life, and hence sustainability. Important Notion To be Read ~ "Neither boys nor girls are born sexist, there is something that we as a society do to them to make them reach that point," says Miriam Gonzalez, founder of 'Inspiring Girls in Spain. Women have inspired a new generation of cooks, chefs, and scholars who wish to rediscover and better appreciate Mexican cuisine. Women have increasingly taken the limelight in the worldwide arena, showcasing Mexican food and culture. The importance of conserving and passing down cultural and gastronomical traditions can no longer be neglected. Women in Mexico have been performing for generations, which makes all Mexicans proud of their culture and cuisine. Discover One-of-a-Kind Underwater Sculptures That Also Serve As Habitats for Marine Life!

Renowned British artist Jason deCaires Taylor has breathed new life into an underwater sculpture park off the coast of Grenada, infusing the vibrant culture and history of the island into his art.  Collaborating with local artists, Taylor created life-size sculptures that were cast from members of the Grenadian community. This installation, named the Coral Carnival, pays homage to the country's annual carnival, Spicemas, and showcases symbolic carnival characters. The Coral Carnival is an expansion of the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, which Taylor originally established in 2006 as the world's first underwater sculpture park. Situated at a depth of about 10 feet (3 meters), the sculptures are easily visible to snorkelers. These unique sculptures, adorned with jewels, sequins, and feathers, mark the first time paint has been used on underwater art. Importantly, environmentally friendly materials such as high-grade stainless steel and PH-neutral marine cement were employed to prevent any damage to the local reef. Not only do the sculptures captivate the eye, but they also serve as habitats for marine life. The bases of the sculptures feature specially designed holes and shelters for creatures like octopuses and lobsters. Funded by the Grenadian Ministry of Implementation and Tourism and the World Bank, this expansion enriches the visitor experience while deepening the connection to Grenada's cultural tapestry.

Welcome to the 'Republic of Good Neighbors' - A Beacon of Hope Tackling Loneliness and Embracing Conviviality

In the midst of a bustling city, a Parisian district has declared itself the “Republic of Good Neighbors” in an effort to combat social isolation and revive conviviality. The 14th arrondissement has been conducting a neighborhood-wide experiment on deliberate living by consciously choosing to be good neighbors. Since 2018, the Republic has been the site of hundreds of small events celebrating conviviality, including brunches, aperitifs, cultural outings, bake-a-thons, children’s activities, and group exercise meets. The airwaves are filled with communications from dozens of WhatsApp groups, for people trading and selling handmade goods, people repairing electronics or mechanical equipment, or sharing referrals to various professional services. Many residents say the deliberate shift to good neighborliness has changed their lives, including immigrants to the area who feel they’re living the Paris they always imagined. The Republic has also lobbied city hall to levy a tax on businesses deemed undesirable by those in the neighborhood, such as banks that no one uses, or delivery hubs. It’s also hired local green entrepreneurs to design a variety of collection points for organic waste which is then turned into compost for the neighborhood trees and flower boxes. The Republic’s most recent civic engagement project was when it turned its attention to the Place des Droits L’Enfant, a plaza that had become a largely lifeless road junction. By working together, the neighbors pedestrianized it, cleaned up litter and broken pavement, planted a variety of garden beds along the roads and plaza, and inaugurated the new space with a big party of music and board games.

By using seaweed fertilizers, farmers can improve crop yields while reducing their impact on the environment. Harvesting the Sun: Revolutionary Technology Combines Solar Power and Agriculture for a Sustainable Future

Scientific advancements are giving rise to unimaginable prospects like farmers being able to generate solar energy and crops at the same time. Not only that, farmers can attain better yields and more energy could be achieved with the two operations separately. Researchers working in techno-agriculture have discovered that by covering crops with translucent solar panel canopies, they can separate the light that fuels energy production from the light that promotes photosynthesis in plants. Our sun's many wavelengths of light have various effects on Earth's biological systems. The blue spectrum of sunlight, for instance, is what life utilizes to recognize the daytime and causes significant hormonal changes in animals and plants that change their behavior from being passive to active. On the other end, plants prefer to employ red light to convert carbon dioxide into sugars. Red light doesn't get as hot as blue light, hence plants exposed to red light spectra during growth exhibit less heat stress than those exposed to blue light. In light of this, assistant professor Majdi Abou Najm of the University of California, Davis, developed organic solar panels constructed of translucent material that absorb blue light to produce power but let the red light with its longer wavelengths pass through to the crops below. Despite having a third less yield due to decreased sunlight, the crops with filtered light only produced half as many heat-stressed or "poor" tomatoes as the uncovered plot. The final picture turns out to be quite profitable when the electricity and water savings are taken into account. Since there is no need to alternate rows of panels or deprive plants of the sun's nourishing beams, Abou Najm sees his transparent solar canopies as the logical next step in this practice.

Growing Crops on Land Covered With Solar Panels Yield Exciting Results

Many countries are taking steps to adopt renewable sources of energy in response to the adverse effects of climate change that the world is currently facing. Solar energy is gaining popularity especially in countries that receive abundant sunlight. Production of solar energy entails the installation of solar panels over a large area of land for maximum production. That will mean the utilization of land that could otherwise be used for agriculture. To tackle this problem, an initiative to grow plants along and under the solar panels was started which gave desirable and positive results. Agrivoltaics Research Greg Barron-Gafford, an associate professor in the School of Geography and Development and his students used solar photovoltaic, or PV, panels and regional vegetables to create the first agrivoltaics research site at Biosphere 2. The team closely monitored the plants such as tomatoes, peppers, kale and herbs from the stage of their germination throughout the three-month growing season. They regularly monitored incoming light levels, air temperature and relative humidity using sensors. Exciting Results After the study, the team found that the agrovoltaics system was very beneficial for both- plants and the panels. The shade from the PV panels cooled down the temperatures during the day and led to warmer nighttime temperatures. The team found that food crops did better in the shade as they were protected from direct sunlight. The yield was also greater than those plants that were growing in the open under the sky. Another advantage is that the water in the soil under the panels transpired at a slower place, so the plants consumed less water than usual. When panels get heated, their efficiency comes down. Plants growing under panels helped in cooling the temperatures and increasing the efficiency of energy production. The positive results of the above studies will encourage maximum utilization of natural resources such as land for food and energy production.
