This month, why not take the opportunity to experience the grandeur of Sikkim and its culture, history, and geography by celebrating the Tibetan New Year's Losar Festival? The popular religious event will be celebrated with joy and festivity from February 21st-27th and will be an experience you won't soon forget.
The Losar Festival, also known as Gyalpo Lossar, is Sikkim's biggest event and brings people from all walks of life together to enjoy local customs, culture, and delicious food. The main festivities take place at Rumtek Monastery and Phodong Monastery, where prayers are said and cultural spectacles take place. Don't miss the chance to witness the traditional Cham Dance (masked lama dance) or any other folk dance or music type.
The Losar Festival is more than just the start of the Tibetan New Year, it is also a time to honor farmers for their laborious efforts. Prayers are made to the local gods in hopes of a bountiful crop, and savory Tsampa and other goodies are prepared to celebrate the harvest season.
In addition to the festivities at the monasteries, immersing yourself in the local culture by staying close to the neighborhood is an experience you won't soon forget. Witness the people dressed to the nines and join in on the preparation and celebration of the Losar Festival!
