This year’s Independence Day flower show at Bengaluru’s iconic Lal Bagh Botanical Garden has blossomed into one of the most successful events in recent memory. With a theme centered around Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution, the show has attracted a staggering 8.41 lakh visitors so far, making it a must-see attraction for both locals and tourists.
The flower show, a much-anticipated annual event, has seen unprecedented footfall this year. On just one day—Sunday—1.35 lakh people flocked to the garden, eager to witness the floral extravaganza. The show has already generated a remarkable ₹2.92 crore in revenue within the first four days, surpassing expectations. Visitors from all corners of Bengaluru, as well as international tourists, have been captivated by the vibrant displays and thematic exhibits.
This year’s theme pays homage to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a towering figure in Indian history. The Lal Bagh Flower Show has gone beyond the usual floral displays, incorporating a series of thematic exhibits that celebrate Ambedkar’s life and legacy. Visitors can explore a 'jeevana darshana' (life vision) at the glasshouse, where a series of intricate floral arrangements and educational exhibits trace his journey from childhood to his later years.
In a novel approach, the organizers have installed screens throughout the garden to play videos that highlight Ambedkar’s milestones and impactful speeches. These displays not only enhance the visual appeal of the show but also offer an educational experience, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of Ambedkar’s contributions to the nation.
In line with its mission to promote sustainability, this year’s flower show is also proudly waste-free. The Horticulture Department has partnered with various organizations to drastically reduce litter and plastic waste at the event. By emphasizing the use of eco-friendly materials and encouraging responsible waste disposal, the show has set a new standard for large-scale events in the city.
Given the massive turnout, Bengaluru’s traffic police had their work cut out for them. Extra personnel were deployed at all entry points to manage the heavy traffic around the park. To ease congestion, parking was restricted near the venue, and the public was strongly encouraged to use public transport to reach the show. The efforts to control the flow of vehicles appear to have paid off, allowing the event to run smoothly despite the large crowds.
The show was officially inaugurated on August 8 by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. During the opening ceremony, Siddaramaiah praised the organizers for their innovative approach to this year’s theme and for their commitment to making the event eco-friendly. He also highlighted the importance of celebrating figures like Ambedkar, whose vision continues to shape modern India.
The Lal Bagh Flower Show is open until August 19, giving visitors plenty of time to experience the breathtaking floral displays and pay tribute to one of India’s greatest leaders. As the event continues to draw large crowds, it serves as a reminder of the enduring appeal of Lal Bagh and the cultural significance of its annual flower show.
