It was the beginning of a long wait  one that would stretch across decades, through records, resilience, and finally redemption.Early Life: Growing Up in the Shadow of LegendsBorn on 11 November 1974, near Shivaji Park, the nursery of Indian cricket, Amol Muzumdar grew up surrounded by the sport’s heartbeat. This Constable Goes the Extra Mile for the Safety of Commuters

Potholes are a big hassle for commuters as they slow down driving and also lead to traffic jams. Potholes as big and deep as craters have even taken lives of commuters and pose a big risk while commuting on bikes leading to accidents some of which are fatal. Ludhiana’s traffic constable Gurbaksh Singh was witness to an accident which made him make up his mind to fill potholes for the safety of commuters. Filling Up Potholes Gurbaksh Singh collects mud, bricks, and interlocking tiles from different parts of the city and carries it in his car trunk to the roads that are riddled with potholes in Bhatinda, Punjab. He single-handedly fixes them and sometimes fellow constables also lend a hand to his noble efforts. He not only fixes the potholes but also clears glass shards if he notices them strewn on the road. So far, he has filled potholes on Bhagu Road, Liberty Chowk, Dana Mandi and the highway leading to his village, Buladhewala. Responsible Citizen Gurbaksh Singh said that he started this mission of fixing potholes when he saw an accident where the biker and pillion rider fell on account of a pothole. They narrowly missed being run over by another vehicle on that road. This incident shook him and he embarked on this mission of filling potholes in addition to his duty as a traffic constable. He has been appreciated for his efforts not only by the state police but also by commuters who are grateful to him for making their ride safe. One commuter even exclaimed that he is doing a double job on a single person’s salary. However, all that Gurbaksh wishes is the safety of commuters and so he is doing his bit for the society.

The satellite series, known as NVS-01, ensures the continuity of NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) services— an Indian satellite navigation system akin to GPS, offering accurate positioning and timing information. The NavIC signals, designed to deliver a user's position with accuracy surpassing 20 meters and timing accuracy better than 50 nanoseconds, have already garnered praise for their reliability and effectiveness. The successful placement of NVS-01 into a precise orbit by GSLV further reinforces ISRO's excellence in satellite deployment. ISRO Chairman S Somanath expressed his elation at the flawless execution of the mission and commended the entire team for their hard work. He highlighted the significance of NVS-01 as a second-generation satellite with enhanced capabilities, including increased signal security and the introduction of a civilian frequency band. Notably, the satellite also features an indigenous rubidium atomic clock, a technology possessed by only a handful of countries. For the past 40 years, Accion Fraterna(AF) Ecology Centre, a non-governmental organization has been addressing the problems and bringing about effective solutions for dryland farmers in 230 villages of the Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh. Recently, it won recognition from the FICCI for running the ‘Best Outstanding Sustainable Agriculture Development Program in the country. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar presented the award to AF Ecology Centre Director Y.V. Malla Reddy who received it in New Delhi on behalf of the organization  He also praised the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry(FICCI) for recognizing their efforts to promote the 'Navadhanya' idea. The Navadhanya concept entails growing a variety of crops in one location so that the farmer's family can get at least one or two crops to harvest throughout the year. Reddy stated that the organization works with 30,000 homes of tiny, marginal rainfed producers and women who are employed as landless laborers. The primary problem in the Anantapur area is the "vulnerability of rural livelihoods" as a result of repeated and prolonged droughts, which are made worse by climate change. According to Mr. Malla Reddy, rainfed farming is in trouble because farmers are unable to adjust to drought-related climate changes, which results in failed crops, debt, and distress. The organization has been striving to bring relief to such farmers through sustainability measures.

Country’s First Water Metro to Start it's Operations

After the success of the metro rail, Kerala now intends to start a water metro that will connect 10 islands and will benefit more than one lakh islanders. The project which is India’s first water metro is slated to be completed by 2020. The project headed by the Kochi Rail Metro Ltd (KRML) will connect 10 islands in Kochi through 15 routes, spanning a distance of 78 km. India’s First Water Metro Waterways used to be the popular means of transport in Kerala. However, over the years this practice gradually declined as the use of roadways and railways gained momentum. The water metro project is expected to reduce pollution and traffic congestion in the city. It will facilitate urban households along the Kochi lakeshore to access business areas on the mainland. The good news is that water transport is far more energy-efficient than rail and road transport. Environment-Friendly Boats The water metro project plans to use modern, energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and safe boats. Cochin Shipyard has agreed to hand over the first boat of Water Metro. A fleet of 78 electrically-propelled hybrid ferries has been proposed to ply to 38 jetties. In all, 38 stations have been identified for the water metro service. How Karnataka Is Turning Food Waste Into Compost

The Karnataka State Compost Development Corporation (KSCDC) had come up with the initiative of collecting segregated wet waste from all households and convert it into organic waste. This has received a huge demand from farmers! As per reports from Times of India, about 4000 tonnes of compost that was processed from the wet waste was sold out in just five months. Over 600 tonnes of wet waste was converted to an enormous amount of 4,306 tonnes of organic compost. The organic compost was in great demand by the farmers. The city of Bengaluru showed an incredible response on this initiative. This organic compost which is being sold to farmers is not only eco-friendly but is also cheaper than the inorganic fertilizers in the market. The organic compost is being sold at subsidized rates to the farmers where the government is paying 50 percent of the prize. Krishna Byregowda, the state’s Minister of Agriculture expressed the overwhelming response the organic waste has got by mentioning that the KDCDC is left with zero stock of compost. Not only local farmers but also those from faraway places have subscribed for the city’s compost. The KSCDC is gathering more of segregated wet waste for processing organic compost.

Indian women’s team beat Pakistan in ICC World Cup

The Indian women’s cricket team scored an emphatic win over Pakistan and secured their third consecutive victory in the ICC Women’s World Cup on Sunday. India was defending a low total of 169, but left-arm spinner Ekta Bisht  (10-2-18-5) gave an outstanding performance which enabled the team to trounce their arch- rivals Pakistan by 95 runs in 38.1 overs. India now tops the table with six points after this win. What appeared to be a low score turned to be daunting and challenging for the Pakistan team as Bisht gave a stellar performance and wickets fell one after another. Bisht ripped apart the Pakistan batting by taking the wickets of Ayesha Zafar (1), Sidra Nawaz (0) and Iram Javed (0) in her first four overs. She later came back to take a couple of wickets again. Pakistan couldn’t recover from the initial setback. Only two players- Opener Nahida Khan (23 off 62 balls) and skipper Sana Mir (29) were able to reach double digit scores for Pakistan. Speaking highly of Bisht, Indian skipper Mithali Raj said that she was proud of Ekta’s performance and that she has always bowled well whenever she was handed the new ball. Earlier during India’s batting, there were some tense moments as India lost the top order batting. The fine batting partnership of Indian keeper Sushma Verma and Jhulan Goswami helped India post a total of 170. Ekta Bisht was given the Man-of-the-Match award for her outstanding bowling performance.

Animals might shrink due to climatic change

Climatic changes may influence growth of animals causing them to shrink in size. There are evidences of past when a similar kind of phenomena occurred due to climatic change. This was around 50 million years ago. Scientists believe that our climate might warm between 2C (scientific acronym 2 degree Celsius change) and 4C by 2100. This change will be catastrophic and might lead to a disaster. Evidences of mammalian dwarfing of the warmest period in the history of the earth named Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) show that animals shrunk to one third of their size as temperatures hit between 5C and 8C. Paleontologists discovered the fossil teeth belonging to an early ancestor of modern horses. The teeth gave information about the amount of food and water ingested by the animals then. This also revealed the nutritional requirements of the animals. The teeth revealed that during Eocene Thermal Maximum 2, the animals shrank in size by 14 per cent as their appetite and nutrients requirement reduced drastically. This warming event was around 3C that occurred approximately 53.7 million years ago. Dr. Ambrosia who is carrying out her study on this said that such phenomena of body change has occurred many times in the history of our planet due to climate change.

Recently, The New York Times reported the discovery of over 100 previously unknown species by a group of twenty-one intrepid scientists who ventured forth in February. Led by marine researcher and expedition leader, Alex Rogers, the team's findings hint at a wealth of biodiversity, with unusual shrimp, fish, and snails among their remarkable discoveries. As their three-week odyssey aboard the Tangaroa draws to a close, the researchers emerge having completed a comprehensive exploration of the Bounty Trove's deep-sea domain, laying the groundwork for further discovery and understanding in this captivating underwater world. The National Institute of Hydrological and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand and the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand have also joined the expedition. "We've got a lot of specimens. I expect the number to go up. It's not just a hundred. I think it's in the hundreds," says Alex Rogers. Among the more than a hundred new species is a never-before-seen star-shaped animal. These sea stars are in danger due to rising ocean conditions, much like the rest of Antarctica's fauna. Warm-water organisms move southward with rising water temperatures, disrupting marine ecosystems and changing environmental factors like currents. It is challenging to predict how these sea stars will respond to the heat due to the challenges associated with doing fieldwork in the isolated seafloors bordering Antarctica. This increases the value of researching sea star specimens in museum collections. The data extracted from individual specimen that have been kept may provide important hints on the fate of their fellow living creatures in the wild. It is believed that there are more than two million species in the waters. However, scientists have only found 10% of the aquatic life. The finding of these organisms will aid researchers in understanding marine life.

The report measures six key factors, including social support, income, health, freedom, generosity, and absence of corruption, to determine a country's level of happiness. Many of the same Nordic countries remain at the top, with Denmark at number two, followed by Iceland at number three. The authors of the report noted that Nordic countries merit special attention in light of their generally high levels of both personal and institutional trust, which was also reflected in their relatively low COVID-19 death rates. From robust social support systems to policies that prioritize equality and sustainability, Finland has created a culture that prioritizes the well-being of its citizens above all else. Interestingly, at position 20, Lithuania has made its debut appearance in the top 20. Global happiness has held up despite the pandemic's problems, according to the report, with life evaluations from 2020 to 2022 being comparable to those from the years before the outbreak. The survey also highlighted that pro-sociality has increased, with regular acts of kindness including lending a hand to a stranger, giving to charities, and volunteering rising above levels seen before the pandemic. As the rest of the world struggled to find happiness amidst a global pandemic and political turmoil, Finland's continued reign as the happiest nation serves as an inspiring example of what can be achieved through dedication to creating a more joyful and fulfilling society.

The telescope also detected the amount of sulfur that is present in frozen pre-stellar dust grains. A New Technology Will Help Solve Electric Car Problems

Due to environmental concerns, people all over the world are gradually making the switch over to electric bikes and cars. The biggest concern of an electric car is that it takes a long time to charge. Scientists at Pennsylvania State University have now come up with a groundbreaking technology that will enable a car battery to charge at a faster rate. Current Problem With Charging Current generation electric cars like Tesla takes at least 30 minutes for a partial charge. The long hours required for charging is a deterrent. Scientists are of the opinion that a speedy charge would entail the battery to take in 400 kilowatts of energy rapidly. However, the current generation of vehicles is incapable of this as there is the danger of lithium plating. There is the risk of the formation of metallic lithium around the anode, which would severely deteriorate battery life. The Solution To overcome this problem with speedy charging, the researchers raised the temperature of their experimental battery to 60 degrees Celsius during the charge cycle, then lowered it back down as it was used. According to senior author Chao-Yang Wang, a mechanical engineer at Pennsylvania State University, this process would limit the battery's exposure to the elevated charge temperature, thus generating a very long cycle life. However, It will take some time for this technology to become operational as numerous tests will have to be conducted to make sure that rapidly raising the temperature is safe and stable, and doesn't lead to explosions given the phenomenal amount of energy that is being transferred.

France pledges to end sales of petrol, diesel vehicles by 2040

As awareness of global warming spreads and its consequences are seen across the world, Paris announced that it will end sales of petrol and diesel by 2040. This announcement was made by new Ecology Minister Nicolas Hulot as France remains committed to meet its targets under the Paris climate accord. Hulot said that while reaching the goal was tough, French carmakers like Peugeot-Citroen and Renault were well equipped to make the switch to electric cars. In Europe, France is the biggest manufacturer of electric cars. Sales of Renault Zoe exceeded all other models in 2016. On Wednesday, Volvo planned to end the production of petrol-only cars from 2019 and all new models will be either electric or hybrids.  Hulot, a veteran environmental campaigner, cited Volvo as an example in making his surprise announcement, part of his plan to make France "carbon neutral" by 2050.  Many countries in the world have expressed their will to reduce to a large extent, the amount of polluting petrol and diesel cars on their roads but only a  few have made firm commitments.   India has said that by 2030, all its cars will be electrically powered. In Europe, Norway strives to end sales of petrol and diesel cars by 2025. Germany aims to put one million electric cars on the road by 2020.  Hulot said that making France free of conventional cars was a matter of public health. Many cities in France like Paris, Lyon, Grenoble and other French cities have a chronic smog problem.

NASA will send next generation atomic clock to space

NASA will send its next-generation atomic clock into space later this year, which will help in the safe exploration of space and solar system. Atomic clocks have been flown into space before, but according to NASA this clock will be smaller, lighter and magnitudes more precise. The clock has been developed by engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The Deep Space Atomic Clock has also been integrated with the spacecraft that will take it into orbit later in 2017. This was disclosed by the US space agency in a statement on Tuesday. Normally, 'two-way' methods are used to track spacecrafts in which the ground-based antenna 'pings' the spacecraft and waits for the signal to return. The distance to the spacecraft can be calculated by measuring how long the signal takes to travel. This information is processed to determine the spacecraft's flight path and any course corrections, if required are suggested.  The new atomic clock developed by NASA enables "one-way" tracking, where the spacecraft does not need to send the signal back to Earth. The spacecraft-based navigation system processes the tracking measurements to determine the path and to know whether any steps are needed to stay on course. NASA said that this clock will provide astronauts with their position and velocity whenever they need it. The Deep Space Atomic Clock will also improve the precision and quantity of the radio data used by scientists for determining a planet's gravity field and probing its atmosphere.
