Arimpur, a small village in Thrissur, Kerala, is witnessing the remarkable impact of the '60-Plus Music Club' on its elderly population. Launched in 2018 by the non-governmental organization Sumithra, this unique club is providing senior citizens with a recreational space to rediscover their talents and enjoy the pleasures of singing and dancing. The transformative power of music and the joy it brings have become evident through the club's regular meetings and activities.
Sumathi, a 72-year-old club member who spent a significant part of her life in Mumbai, is thrilled to reunite with friends, sing her favorite old Hindi film songs, and even showcase her talents as one of the club's most sought-after singers. Leela, despite breathing difficulties, finds solace in the club, shedding her inhibitions and swaying to the melodies sung by fellow members. The club not only offers a platform for artistic expression but also serves as a gathering place for senior citizens to voice their concerns and seek support from local authorities.
During the pandemic-induced lockdown, the club played a crucial role in organizing counseling sessions and online awareness classes, ensuring that the elderly received the necessary assistance and guidance. Additionally, the NGO supporting the club introduced the 'vayojana helpline,' a network of volunteers providing aid to the elderly and differently-abled individuals in need. Recognizing the club's impact, the local panchayat incorporated the helpline into its annual plan.
With over 70 people associated with the club, including 25 regular members, the '60-Plus Music Club' has experienced significant growth. It has evolved from an informal gathering to a group that performs at public events, granting its members opportunities they never dreamed of before. Holding a microphone and captivating an audience has become a reality for these once-unassuming individuals. The club's success has made some members highly sought after for various programs organized by the panchayat.
The '60-Plus Music Club' in Arimpur stands as a shining example of how music and community support can empower and uplift the elderly, providing them with a renewed sense of purpose and fulfillment.
