After the success of the metro rail, Kerala now intends to start a water metro that will connect 10 islands and will benefit more than one lakh islanders. The project which is India’s first water metro is slated to be completed by 2020.
The project headed by the Kochi Rail Metro Ltd (KRML) will connect 10 islands in Kochi through 15 routes, spanning a distance of 78 km.
Waterways used to be the popular means of transport in Kerala. However, over the years this practice gradually declined as the use of roadways and railways gained momentum. The water metro project is expected to reduce pollution and traffic congestion in the city. It will facilitate urban households along the Kochi lakeshore to access business areas on the mainland. The good news is that water transport is far more energy-efficient than rail and road transport.
The water metro project plans to use modern, energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and safe boats. Cochin Shipyard has agreed to hand over the first boat of Water Metro. A fleet of 78 electrically-propelled hybrid ferries has been proposed to ply to 38 jetties. In all, 38 stations have been identified for the water metro service.
KMRL Managing Director Alkesh Kumar Sharma opined that once completed, the water metro will be the best water transport project in entire Asia.
