Metro's Infrastructure Just Got More Innovative And Green For Future!

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) is building the Bamboo Bazar Metro Station, which will have bamboo decorations everywhere. This is new for metro stations in India. Punati Shridhar, who leads the Bamboo Society of India (BSI) and used to be the top forest official, said BMRCL said yes to their idea of a station with a bamboo theme. Also, The New Indian Express reported that they'll plant Indian bamboo to make the areas under the metro tracks and stations greener. (Source: Google Images) Dr. KN Murthy, who runs BSI, told The New Indian Express that they'll use Bambusa tulda wood from Tripura to make the station's outdoor areas and crafts look nice. Also, they plan to plant Bambusa multiplex along a 5 km part of Bannerghatta Road, from Jayadeva Hospital to Meenakshi Temple. They'll start working on both projects in about three months. They're still figuring out how much it'll cost and how much bamboo they'll need. The BMRCL will pay for the metro station's development and the planting on the road dividers using money set aside for helping the community. Shridhar pointed out that India has the biggest bamboo growing area in the world at 13.9 million hectares. But China, with only seven million hectares, is the top producer. They make 150 million tonnes, while India makes 4.6 million tonnes. So, to boost production and demand in India, we need to use more Indian bamboo for building stuff. Also, there's a plan to build a metro station in Mumbai using bamboo. It's worth mentioning that bamboo is already used in some big projects. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a historic visit to Kolkata on Wednesday (March 6), unveiling India's inaugural underwater metro route and several other projects worth Rs 15,400 crore ($220 million). First Prototype Driverless Metro Train Reaches Bengaluru, To Be Assembled Soon

Excitement builds as Bengaluru gears up for its first taste of autonomous metro travel! The Chinese-built prototype of Bengaluru's first autonomous metro train will shortly be traveling to the Hebbagodi metro rail depot by mid-February. The train prototype landed at the port of Chennai. The prototype of the driverless metro train reached Bengaluru on Thursday as it was delivered at Chennai port from China last week. The train comprises six coaches and will be assembled at Electronics City. This prototype train will conduct trial runs on the Yellow line, which is set to connect RV road with Bommasandra via Silk Board. Bengaluru Metro Rail Transport Corporation Limited (BMRCL) awarded CRCC Nanjing Puzhen Co Ltd the contract in 2019 for 216 coaches, including this prototype train. The train assembly will take place at Electronics City, under the supervision of a group of Chinese engineers. Additionally, two trains are anticipated to arrive in Bengaluru by May, and beginning in June, two trains each month after that. These autonomous trains have a 90-second frequency and 21-meter-long coaches. The 19-kilometer Yellow Line, spanning 16 stops from Bommasandra to RV Road, promises to alleviate city gridlock significantly. This vital link connects the densely populated Central Silk Board district to Bommasandra. Originally slated for this month, the Yellow Line's launch has been delayed due to ongoing development work. Recognizing the challenges posed by urbanization and climate change, there will be a shift from metro to heavy rail systems with automated train operation. This transition ensures enhanced safety and efficiency, with autonomous mobility streamlining rail operations by eliminating human errors and uncertainties. By integrating technologies like Automatic Train Control, Automatic Train Protection, and Automatic Train Supervision, railways can optimize fleet coordination, leading to a more precise, dependable, and efficient network. Autonomous technology ~ Driverless trains will be used as part of the Yellow Line's Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling system, according to BMRCL officials. CBTC, sometimes referred to as "driverless technology," will be utilized in Bengaluru Metro for the first time. At the moment, Namma Metro employs the distance-to-go (TTG) signaling system, which has a 2.5-minute interval between two trains. Train headway can, however, be lowered to less than 90 seconds using CBTC. BMRCL has chosen to keep using loco pilots despite being able to run autonomous trains on the Yellow Line to ease passenger concerns. For the Yellow Line, Siemens Mobility is putting its automated train technology and CBTC system into operation. "The greatest level of automation, known as GoA 4, enables autonomous control and operation of trains. The CBTC system, which will have electronic interlockings, an automated train protection and monitoring system, and a telecommunication system, will be installed by Siemens Mobility over the Yellow Line. Siemens Mobility released a statement saying, "BMRCL will be able to run trains 90 seconds apart thanks to automated signaling and train operations, offering greater availability and an enhanced passenger experience." Most likely, Yellow Line will begin operations in Q1 2024 ~ Months of January, February and March According to sources, Yellow Line won't start operating until Q1 2024. Anjum Parwez, managing director of BMRCL, stated to Moneycontrol that the first two trains from China will arrive in Bengaluru by October. He also mentioned that they could start running seven trains on the Yellow Line. Update on the Security Mechanism: The Delhi-Meerut RAPIDX train has CCTV cameras, an emergency door-opening system, and a button to contact the train operator as far as safety features go. Each coach has roughly six CCTV cameras, and the protection of passengers is a top priority on this line. Coaches also are equipped with a fire extinguisher, an emergency door opener, and Passenger Emergency Communication Units, which allow passengers to contact train operators in the event of a medical or other emergency. Speedy Future is ahead: RapidX, India's first regional train service, will launch on a 17-kilometer section on Friday, October 20. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is committed to the responsible acquisition of archaeological art and applies rigorous provenance standards to both new acquisitions and works in its collection. The museum values its long-standing relationships with the government of India and is pleased to resolve this matter, according to a statement from the institution. The museum had contacted Homeland Security in 2015 regarding its works from Kapoor and is now acting on the matter as a result of the criminal investigation into Kapoor by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. Justice Felicia A. Mennin of the NY Supreme Court had issued a search warrant against 15 items supplied by Kapoor to the museum, including an 11th-century sandstone Celestial Dancer (Apsara) from Madhya Pradesh valued north of $1 million and a first-century BCE Yakshi Terracotta from West Bengal. Subhash Kapoor, the smuggler, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by an Indian court under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. Kapoor has been accused of selling numerous artefacts that were looted from temples, ruins, and archaeological sites in India. Country’s First Water Metro to Start it's Operations

After the success of the metro rail, Kerala now intends to start a water metro that will connect 10 islands and will benefit more than one lakh islanders. The project which is India’s first water metro is slated to be completed by 2020. The project headed by the Kochi Rail Metro Ltd (KRML) will connect 10 islands in Kochi through 15 routes, spanning a distance of 78 km. India’s First Water Metro Waterways used to be the popular means of transport in Kerala. However, over the years this practice gradually declined as the use of roadways and railways gained momentum. The water metro project is expected to reduce pollution and traffic congestion in the city. It will facilitate urban households along the Kochi lakeshore to access business areas on the mainland. The good news is that water transport is far more energy-efficient than rail and road transport. Environment-Friendly Boats The water metro project plans to use modern, energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and safe boats. Cochin Shipyard has agreed to hand over the first boat of Water Metro. A fleet of 78 electrically-propelled hybrid ferries has been proposed to ply to 38 jetties. In all, 38 stations have been identified for the water metro service. Delhi Metro Helps Commuters to Reduce Their Carbon Footprint by Allowing E- Scooter Renting Services

The Delhi Metro has started an electric scooter renting facility at four important stations to offer efficient last-mile connectivity to commuters. The e-scooters provided by qQuick will be operated at Vishwavidyalaya, Mandi House, Dwarka Sector 9 and Nehru Enclave metro stations. Reducing Carbon Footprint Currently, battery-operated bicycle-sharing services that are eco-friendly and cost-effective are operational at 7 metro stations and 19 stations have the facility of pedal bicycle-sharing services. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has also tied up with bike-sharing app Yulu for last-mile connectivity. The introduction of e-scooter services will also give a further boost to the efforts to offer eco-friendly first and last-mile connectivity to commuters. The Delhi Metro The Delhi Metro covers an area of nearly 350 km with over 250 metro stations and nine colour-coded lines. The e-scooter services have been introduced in four stations that are Vishwavidyalaya, Mandi House, Dwarka Sector 9 and Nehru Enclave metro stations. Vishwavidyalaya is located on the Yellow Line, while Dwarka Sector 9 and Mandi House appear on the Blue Line. Nehru Enclave is situated on the Magenta Line. First of its Kind: City of Joy to Soon Get India’s First Underwater Metro

Countless daily commuters in Kolkata rely on the metro when it comes to travelling in the city of joy. And now the residents are waiting for the upcoming east-west metro tunnel in the city which will be an underwater river tunnel. It is being constructed underneath the Hooghly River and will be completely functional next to next year. An Exciting Ride The twin tunnel is being built on the up and down line and the passengers, who will be travelling between Howrah and Mahakaran stations, will get the exhilarating feeling of travelling underwater via metro rail for around a minute. The tunnel is being constructed 30 meters under the riverbed and it is 10.8 kilometres in length while its width is 5.5 meters. The construction of the cross passes between the two tunnels has been done and 5490 meters of it have been built between Subhash Sarovar and Sealdah. A report by PTI stated that by 2035, the east-west metro will ferry an estimated 1 million people every day. The upcoming underwater river tunnel which will be first of its kind in the country has already made people frenzy. Metro has always been an integral medium of transport for the residents of Kolkata and witnessing it being developed to this extent is quite amazing. It is going to be one exhilarating ride.

An Initiative Ensuring Women Safety

Women safety is a topmost priority these days. Hence major step was recently taken by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), especially for the women passengers. Starting from the next month, first two doors of Bengaluru Metro will be only for women. Mahendra Jain, the Managing Director of BMRCL said the idea was to ensure the convenience for the women while they are entering and getting down from the train. He also added that soon there will be six coaches instead of four and then the first two shall be allocated only for women.

PM Modi To Inaugurate Hyderabad Metro Rail

Hyderabad will soon join the list of selected Indian cities that have a metro railway system. In fact, the entire metro rail project stretches for 72 km in three corridors making it one of the biggest metro rail projects in Hyderabad. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be inaugurating the Hyderabad Metro on November 28. It has got all the requires safety approvals. Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) sources said Modi will unveil a pylon at Miyapur metro rail station, to mark the inauguration of the first phase of the project covering a distance of 30 km in two corridors. The Prime Minister will also be given a presentation of digital images of the evolution of the railway system in Hyderabad from the days of the Nizam State Railways to the elevated Metro Rail project. Then, he is expected to travel in the metro train for a distance of 13 km. Two hours after the formal inauguration, the project will be thrown open to the public. The metro project which commenced on April 2012 and cost over Rs 18,500 crore is executed by Larsen and Toubro. Modi will be in the city to inaugurate the three-day Global Entrepreneurship Summit being organized by the US government in collaboration with Niti Ayog. It will also be attended by Ivanka Trump.

Heritage walks in Old Delhi!

Delhi Metro offers its passengers participation in ‘Heritage Walk’ in Old Delhi every Saturday! This walk will be from four metro station in Old Delhi. This is an initiative from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) offering special walks through areas of Old Delhi that will give a much detailed view of Old Delhi’s cultural and heritage landmarks. The inaugural walk entitled ‘An Empire’s Tale through the Blooming Red’ was held on August 5. A total of eight walks with different themes will be arranged on all weekends of August. This comes as a part of their pilot project. Delhi Metro is working in tie up with Delhi Walks which organizes various walks for visitors to historical places across the nation. In the ‘Heritage Walk’, the tourists or visitors will gather at the metro stations of Old Delhi and then start their walk with trained guides. The walk will cover various landmarks like the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Chawri Bazar and Chandni Chowk. Every walk charges Rs. 500 per head and is for about 60 to 90 minutes. The aim of this initiative is to bring the city’s rich heritage and culture close to people. The initiative is in its pilot phase and will be extended depending on its feedback.

Kochi Metro wins many hearts

The people of Kerala were elated when Kochi Metro started its services on Sunday. 400 people were selected as the first passengers of the new Kochi Metro which included senior citizens from an old age home as well as the differently abled. The Kochi Metro has been constructed by the Delhi Metro Rail Limited, with E Sreedharan, India's "Metro Man", as its special advisor. At the inauguration ceremony headed by the PM, Sreedharan was greeted to a thunderous applause for his contribution to the country. It is the fastest metro to be completed and its first phase is operational. Kochi metro also includes the technology for driverless trains and plans to implement this in the near future. The project is winning hearts as it reaches out to various sections of the population with strong emotive issues. The project received praise as it employed workers from Kudumbashree (Women empowerment and poverty eradication program) as well as members from the transgender community. Kochi metro is also involved in sustainable initiatives with the introduction of non motorized transport corridors in the city, installation of solar panels for power and vertical garden on every fourth metro pillar. Elias George, the Managing Director of KMRL ( Kochi Metro Rail Ltd.) said that the best aspect of the Kochi Metro is that even though most of the government schemes were unidirectional, they were happy that they could combine the metro project with several poverty-alleviation projects. A 13.4 km section of the line from Aluva to Palarivattom was opened to the public. A second 5 km section from Palarivattom up to Maharaja's College will be made operational by August 2017.

India’s first underwater metro to be soon open in Kolkata

India’s first underwater tunnel is nearing its completion and will be soon open in Kolkata. The tunnel is several feet under the Hooghly. This will be the first time India will get a metro running under flowing water. The tunnel is dug 30 meters below the riverbed and is at a distance of few meters from the Howrah Bridge. India had no such underwater transportation making this very unique in itself. The tunnel-boring machines were used for first time in an Eastern part of India as 10 lakh tonnes of mud was unearthed for the construction of the tunnel. There is basically two parts of the route with some underwater and some underground. Of the first tunnel, 16.6 kilometer is ready. The second tunnel in nearing completion. Also of the entire length, 10.8 kilometer is underground and 1 kilometer is underwater. It will connect two terminals namely Howrah and Sealdah. Each has an account of 10 to 12 lakh travellers daily. The tunnel is made with a service of 10 years and hence most of the details are taken into consideration to avoid water leakage. It involves water tightness, waterproofing and design of gaskets. This will be the first transportation in India underway.

A new

Heritage Line of Delhi Metro is now open for public. It has three stations namely Jama Masjid, Delhi Gate and Red Fort. The new line was inaugurated by the Union minister of Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Ceremony was done through video conferencing at the Metro Bhawan. The Heritage Line is an extension of the Violet Line which runs between Faridabad and ITO. The new line starts from the IOT-Kashmere Line and will considerably reduce the traffic at the Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazar stations of the Yellow Line. Mr. Naidu also addressed that the opening of the Heritage Line will boost Delhi’s economy as this will attract more tourists. Visitors need not worry about traffic jams and parking issues. The construction of the new line was not less than a challenge for engineers as they had to design lines through crowded areas and through areas close to historical monuments. The stations of this line are all underground and are designed in a historic rich cultural heritage theme. Currently, the total metro service lines operable in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) are 217 kilometres and have 162 stations. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is also guiding many other metro projects in different cities across the nation.

Metro in Lucknow to start soon

Come June this year and Lucknow people can experience the metro rail. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday announced that the first phase of Lucknow Metro will start for the public in second half of June this year. “Considerable progress has been made on the Lucknow Metro project. The previous government had dedicated only a half-complete metro rail project in Lucknow. We have received only three trains up to now. We will need one more train. The necessary instructions in this regard have been issued,” he said after a meeting with union urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu here. The chief minister also said: “The work on metro first phase, about 8 km, is nearing completion. The procedure that includes the railway safety commissioner’s clearance will need about one-and-a-half months. We will be able to complete all these procedures only after mid-June 2017.” He informed that there was a need to set up metro rail in Kanpur and Varanasi. “We have sent the detailed project reports (DPRs) for Kanpur and Varanasi projects. We have also initiated the process of preparing DPR for Meerut, Agra and Allahabad and sought preparation of DPR for Jhansi and Gorakhpur too,” he said.

Bengaluru metro station boasts of artistic poems

If you are travelling by metro in Bengaluru, then you can enjoy the poems that reflect the experience of travelling by Metro written by Kannada poets. While the poets visited the Cubbon Park Metro station and travelled around, they jotted down their musings in a poem format which are now on display at the select spots at the station. This exercise was a part of a poetry activity called as Pada Sanchara or voyage of words. The poems are curated by poet Mamta Sagar. The initiative was started by BMRC and Srishti Institute of Art, technology and design.Poets H S Venkateshamurthy, Sumathi Rumi Harish, Chand Pasha and Mamta Sagar penned down their thoughts about experience of travelling by metro. The poems are displayed along with a video recording of the poets' readings. Some words picked from the poems have been designed by designers Manasee Jog and Saksham Verma from Srishti and displayed on the station. The metro stations celebrated the art and poems in an unique way where the poet’s work has been displayed and passerby gets an insight of beautiful poems and their experience. In a report published in the Times of India H S Venkateshmurthy's poem says This is our metro, an ode to young artists, responds to skilfully designed interiors and the art showcased at the station. It celebrates creativity and art which can transform junk into something special. Activist-poet Sumathi Rumi Harish responds to the structure of the station. The poem talks about how neat and clean spaces fail to recollect stories and marginalized histories of people who built them.
