Countless daily commuters in Kolkata rely on the metro when it comes to travelling in the city of joy. And now the residents are waiting for the upcoming east-west metro tunnel in the city which will be an underwater river tunnel. It is being constructed underneath the Hooghly River and will be completely functional next to next year.
The twin tunnel is being built on the up and down line and the passengers, who will be travelling between Howrah and Mahakaran stations, will get the exhilarating feeling of travelling underwater via metro rail for around a minute.
The tunnel is being constructed 30 meters under the riverbed and it is 10.8 kilometres in length while its width is 5.5 meters. The construction of the cross passes between the two tunnels has been done and 5490 meters of it have been built between Subhash Sarovar and Sealdah.
A report by PTI stated that by 2035, the east-west metro will ferry an estimated 1 million people every day. The upcoming underwater river tunnel which will be first of its kind in the country has already made people frenzy. Metro has always been an integral medium of transport for the residents of Kolkata and witnessing it being developed to this extent is quite amazing. It is going to be one exhilarating ride.
