Bengaluru Metro is set to roll out India’s first driverless trainset, a major development set to transform urban travel. This milestone fast tracks the Yellow Line’s expansion, enhancing connectivity and providing much-needed relief from Bengaluru’s traffic jams.
The first driverless trainset, manufactured by Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) under the “Make-in-India” initiative, was officially handed over on Monday and is en route to Bengaluru. The trainset is expected to reach the Hebbagodi depot by January 15.
The Yellow Line spans 18.8 kilometers, connecting R.V. Road to Bommasandra through major hubs like Electronics City, a key IT and industrial corridor. This line aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion, offering a seamless travel experience for commuters. Key interchange stations at Silk Board, R.V. Road, and Jayadeva will integrate the Yellow Line with the existing Pink, Green, and Purple lines, improving connectivity across the city.
Once fully operational, the Yellow Line is projected to serve over 2.5 lakh passengers daily, transforming daily commutes.
Driverless Technology: A Leap Towards Automation
The trainsets are fully driverless. The advanced technology enhances efficiency, reduces power consumption, and prioritizes passenger safety. Features include modern interiors, optimized energy usage, and an emphasis on sustainability, ensuring a secure and seamless commuting experience.
BMRCL plans to operationalize the Yellow Line by March or April 2025 with two trainsets initially: a prototype from China’s CRRC Corporation Ltd and the newly delivered trainset from TRSL. If this proves unfeasible, operations will commence with a third train, reducing the wait time between services to 20 minutes.
Make-in-India Excellence
The trainsets showcase India’s engineering prowess and the success of the “Make-in-India” initiative. Manufactured by West Bengal-based TRSL, these stainless-steel trainsets represent the first locally made rolling stock for Bengaluru Metro’s Yellow Line. TRSL has committed to delivering two additional trainsets by April 2025 and aims to ramp up production to supply two trains per month by September. This accelerated timeline ensures that the Yellow Line project remains on track, meeting the city’s growing transportation demands.
The Yellow Line is part of Bengaluru Metro’s broader Phase 2 expansion, which includes 73.95 kilometers of new tracks for the Purple, Green, and Yellow Lines. CRRC Corporation Ltd is supplying 216 new coaches under this project, with 90 coaches (15 six-coach trains) designated for the Yellow Line. The integration of these state-of-the-art trainsets will enhance the city’s public transit network, offering efficient and comfortable travel options for commuters.
As these trainsets prepare to hit the tracks, they promise to revolutionize Bengaluru’s daily commutes, offering improved accessibility to key corridors and easing the city’s traffic congestion. With operations on the Yellow Line set to begin by mid-2025, Bengaluru Metro continues to pave the way for a smarter, more connected future.
