As reported by the Times of India, thirteen-year-old Sakshi quietly expresses her father’s dream: “Papa ka sapna hai, ki main CA banu.” Nearby, 14-year-old Pinki gazes at a pole beside the flyover. “Main ise bina dare chadh sakti hoon,” she says confidently, aspiring to become a malkhamb champion. Their voices, soft yet with confidence, rise above, proving that fate does not decide their dreams. From Factory Floors to Aspirational FuturesNine-year-old Choti plays with the buckle on her worn blue bag. Her father manufactures these buckles, and her mother labors in a nearby factory. Yet Choti dreams of a different future. “Mujhe doctor banna hai,” she reflects. She says she had to stop studying after Class 12 because of financial problems.Bridging the Learning GapIndia’s overburdened government schools often assign one teacher to more than 60 students. Here, the flyover classroom maintains a comfortable ratio of 20–25 students per instructor, allowing for much-needed personalization and care. Many students who couldn't write their name just a year ago today shine brightly as they solve math problems with ease. Volunteers celebrate each milestone, recognizing that in environments like these, believing in oneself is half the battle won.A Bridge of Dreams, Not Just TrafficEvery day, in this humble classroom, a new hope grows. Where others see dust and noise, these educators and students see opportunity. Guardians of the Wild: How Amrabad Tiger Reserve Battles Plastic Pollution

Nestled within the lush Nallamala forest of Telangana, the Amrabad Tiger Reserve (ATR) has declared war on one of the most pervasive threats to its environment: plastic waste. This initiative, launched just over three years ago, culminated in the reserve being declared plastic-free on July 1, 2024. Forest staff have seized a staggering 5,600 kg of plastic waste in under a month, highlighting the severity of the issue and the reserve's dedication to combating it. The Plastic Menace ATR has been grappling with plastic pollution for years, a problem exacerbated by the heavy traffic on the 70-km highway that cuts through the reserve. This route, bustling with 400 to 1,600 vehicles daily—and up to 2,800 during festive seasons—serves as a major thoroughfare for pilgrims traveling to the Srisailam temple and reservoir. The resulting litter, predominantly plastic water bottles and snack wrappers, has posed a significant threat to the wildlife and environment. In the past year alone, ATR collected an alarming 17,000 kg of recyclable and 33,000 kg of non-recyclable waste. The effort to tackle this issue began over three years ago, when the reserve employed "swachh sevaks" or ragpickers from the local tribal community to manage waste collection. Despite these efforts, the need for a more comprehensive solution became apparent. Vehicles passing through the reserve are now thoroughly inspected at checkpoints in Mannanur, Durvasula, and Domalapenta. Common disposable plastic items such as water bottles and snack packets are seized to prevent them from polluting the forest. This initiative is not limited to waste collection. The ATR has also taken significant steps to educate travelers about the importance of maintaining a clean environment. A fine of Rs 10,000 is imposed for violations, reinforcing the message that preserving the natural habitat is a shared responsibility. Additionally, the reserve has introduced sustainable alternatives, such as providing potable water from a reverse osmosis plant and promoting the use of cloth and jute bags crafted by local women. Empowering the Community The plastic-free initiative has not only benefitted the environment but also provided livelihoods to local communities. Twenty-two women from the Chenchu tribal community have been trained to produce eco-friendly products like cloth and jute bags and biodegradable plates made from bauhinia leaves. These products are available for sale at the Srisailam temple and local shops, offering tourists an eco-friendly option while supporting local artisans. Moreover, the ATR employs 132 people in various roles, including nature guides, animal trackers, and drivers. These jobs are crucial for fostering a symbiotic relationship between the reserve's conservation efforts and the local population. The nature guides, often young Chenchu men and women, play a vital role in educating visitors about the reserve's wildlife and the importance of conservation. The impact of these measures has been profound. The ATR's efforts have not only curbed plastic pollution but also improved the overall environment, creating a healthier habitat for its wildlife. The reserve's tiger population, which has grown from seven in 2018 to an estimated 40.. “The presence of several cubs is a positive sign of a thriving ecosystem," notes Sushanth Bobade, a trainee IFS officer at ATR. Despite the challenges, such as reduced revenues for local vendors due to the plastic ban, the reserve's management remains committed to finding sustainable solutions. The creation of more base camps for anti-poaching activities, funded by the proceeds from waste segregation and recycling, further demonstrates the ATR's holistic approach to conservation. A Tree's Revival: The Heartwarming Tradition of Nagarkurnool

Every year, on July 28, people around the world celebrate World Nature Conservation Day, recognizing the importance of conserving our planet's natural resources and honoring those dedicated to protecting nature. For the students of Government Girls High School in Nagarkurnool, Telangana, this day holds a special significance beyond the usual slogans, posters, and plantation drives. They celebrate the "birthday" of a beloved tree, the Seema Chintha (Manila tamarind), which they worship and thank every year for its resilience and life. A Storm of Destruction The story of the Seema Chintha tree begins with a devastating thunderstorm on May 10, 2017. The storm, which claimed lives and caused significant damage, also uprooted the cherished tree in the schoolyard. When the school reopened in June, the students and teachers were disheartened to see the once-thriving tree lying on the ground, clinging to life by a single root. Source: Google Images A Teacher's Determination Gudibanda Yashoda Reddy, a dedicated social studies teacher at the school, was particularly affected by the tree's fate. Speaking to The Hindu, she said "I was coming to take special classes for high school students when the tree collapsed. I felt bad, as the children loved its fruit, but there was little I could do," she recalled. However, upon discovering new shoots on the fallen tree, Yashoda Reddy was inspired to take action. The Rescue Mission Yashoda Reddy sought the assistance of the Vata Foundation, an NGO based in Hyderabad that specializes in tree translocation services. P. Uday Krishna, a volunteer from the foundation, recalled the urgency of the situation, noting that they had been informed that the tree was running out of time. Their task was to lift the tree without damaging its only surviving root. The foundation agreed to cover all the costs involved, provided that the students would be able to witness the tree's revival process.. With great care and effort, the team managed to lift and replant the tree. The Seema Chintha tree began to grow new branches in the opposite direction to regain its balance. To commemorate this miraculous recovery, the school started a unique tradition. Every year on July 28, the students tie raksha bandhan to the tree, made of flowers and embedded with messages promoting tree protection. Even after her retirement, Yashoda Reddy visits the tree annually on World Nature Conservation Day. She performs a puja to instill a love for trees in the students, ensuring that the tradition continues. Seven batches of students have graduated since the tradition began, yet it remains a vibrant part of the school's culture. It teaches the students valuable lessons about caring for the environment and the significance of every single tree. The school's commitment to celebrating the tree's revival highlights the powerful connection between the community and nature. World Nature Conservation Day, celebrated globally to emphasize the importance of conserving our natural resources, is brought to life through the heartfelt efforts of a teacher, a school, and an NGO working together to save a single tree. Every May, the Gulmohar tree, also known as the Mayflower, adorns the Goan skyline. It rises in the sky like an orange and red flame, captivating everyone in its path and transforming the Goan countryside into a breathtakingly beautiful picture frame. Goa is set to take part in the Festival of Democracy in May, where citizens will have the power to determine their fate for the ensuing five years. Goa is known for its beaches, rivers, meadows, forests, hills, and plateaus—a kaleidoscope of breathtaking scenery that soothes the body and mind. Every community celebrates Tisreanchem (clams) or (seashells) Fest on the second Sunday in May. This is a wonderful representation of the secular character of 'Goans' and is observed in Nerul's Bhattier, Dandadi, and Forta Vaddo. The 'Bamon Vaddo' villagers in Merces have observed this May feast for more than 50 years. Attending the 'ladainha' serves as a homecoming celebration for married women. At the grassroots level, these flavors, colors, and passion united everyone, including the diaspora. Hills are being leveled, concrete buildings are strewn along the shore, and more domestic travelers are visiting Calangute or Candolim for wild nightlife. The mudança has now moved to Singapore and Europe for the wealthier Goans. But Goa, with all its celebrations, is a brand that should be preserved! Even though May is a hot and muggy month in Goa, it is also the month of summer vacation when the Goan diaspora—those from both inside and outside the nation—return home to rekindle their village kinship and visit their ancestral home. For many Goans, no matter how far they travel, their village is their version of heaven on earth. There is always more light in his or her village! a grand community annual celebration that was recently held at St Anthony Chapel in Bhatti Ward of Nerul. Women emerge from their houses clutching 'adoli', traditional tools used for scraping fish, drawing curious onlookers to follow their path. Their hurried steps converge on a single destination - a house where several other women are seated in the courtyard, engaged in the meticulous task of cleaning clams. This cleaning ritual marks the preparation for the revered 'Tisreachem Fest' or 'Feast of Clams', a cherished tradition that fosters unity among the villagers of Nerul. Philip Dsouza of Bhatti, Nerul, explains, "What makes this celebration unique is its community spirit. Members from every house in Bhatti village come together to participate in the preparations, transcending strained relationships to unite in a shared endeavor." For residents, the feast serves as a joyous reunion, drawing back those who have moved away to cities like Bombay, Dubai, Bahrain, and Kuwait. The atmosphere at the celebrant's house is one of jubilant camaraderie, as women bond over shared traditions, laughter, and the anticipation of the festivities to come. The MBBS students pursuing community medicine at GMC play a crucial role in identifying families in dire need of winter warmth. They visit people for socio-clinic profiles as part of their curriculum and come across the poorest individuals who struggle to keep warm in the harsh winter cold. To expand their reach, the doctors collaborate with ASHA workers to identify more families in need. The initiative gains momentum during the 40-day period of harshest winter, known as Chilai Kalan, where temperatures remain well below freezing and snowfall is highly probable. Dr. Salim appeals to people to donate warm clothes and footwear for families who cannot afford them. The response from the community has been overwhelming, with people from various walks of life visiting the department to drop off warm clothes. The donated apparel includes pherans, sweaters, jackets, trousers, warm shirts, and thermal vests. This heartfelt initiative benefits over 100 families every year, ensuring they have the necessary warmth to survive the rough weather. People in this village have typical African features and they seem to be of African descent, yet they converse in fluent Gujarati! The Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN), a nonprofit that provides resources and skill-training programs to empower social minorities and impoverished communities, had a major influence on her path to self-sufficiency. When speaking with SheThePeople, Majhi gladly discussed how she had developed as an entrepreneur and the vital impact that encouragement and support networks had played in her success. In addition to being successful in her own right now, the 26-year-old is inspiring other women in her town to pursue financial freedom. Sangita Majhi's Story ~ Sangita Majhi's life took an unexpected turn after marrying Paresh Chandra Majhi, a dedicated elementary school teacher, in 2017. Despite her youth and recent graduation from Keonjhar D.D. College, Sangita quickly adapted to her new role, managing household duties and caring for her extended family, which included her husband, two young boys, father-in-law, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law. The family of six, however, struggled with financial challenges, relying solely on Paresh's modest income. "It was becoming harder to make ends meet, and my spouse's income wasn't enough to support the whole family," Sangita recalled. That's when she learned of a position for a Sarathi from a community resource person (CRP) in their Panchayat. The work entailed organizing women to raise awareness and organize applicants for skills and jobs. This opportunity was provided by UN Women and PRADAN as part of the Second Chance Education (SCE) program. Majhi's scholastic background and interview poise, together with her self-assurance, helped her be chosen as a Sarathi when she applied. But her career was cut short by the COVID-19 lockdowns that coincided with the birth of her son, Jagannath. Majhi faced various obstacles because of the uncertainties surrounding her future. She was urged to go to some skill-building classes that would enable her to start her own business. She participated in Start Your Business, Grow Your Business, Orientation on Business Plan Preparation, and Bookkeeping Training programs. (Source: Google Images) Road To Entrepreneurship ~ Majhi was enjoying some puffed rice, which she had liked since she was a young child, one day on her way home from training when she had an epiphany about a business concept. Given that puffed rice was a popular food in the area but lacked a specialized local producer, the idea of establishing a production unit for it in the Thakurmunda tehsil seemed virtually obvious. Majhi opened up a shop next to the market and asked PRADAN for a loan so that she could purchase a puffed rice roaster machine. She was able to obtain a ₹30,000 loan in June 2022 through Rang De, a peer-to-peer social financing platform that offers microenterprises loans with an 8% return on investment. After setting up the equipment, she employed a worker who had previously roasted puffed rice. Majhi also studied a lot of puffed rice recipes on YouTube. She wasn't familiar with the machines at first, but she persisted without wavering. She refined her abilities and was prepared to realize her company idea after going through several false starts. The secret to her success as an entrepreneur was her commitment to making the most of the resources at her disposal, learning, and adapting. Many villagers disapproved of Majhi's business venture and questioned her ability due to her gender. "You are a woman; what will you do in business, how will you support your family?" the locals used to ask, she recounted. ''But aside from providing for my family, I can now decide on every aspect of my life. I support the family that I am proud of and pay my older son's educational costs." Currently, Majhi generates a healthy profit of over ₹22,000 on a monthly turnover of roughly ₹40,000. "Since I have become an entrepreneur, I have created my own distinct identity in the hamlet," she said. She also mentioned how she used social media sites like Facebook and WhatsApp to expand her clientele and establish herself as a community leader, demonstrating the power of technology. A group of refugee women meets frequently in Cairo, Egypt, where they combine their funds and make financial decisions that benefit other people. At the age of 110, Fatima is the oldest of the 29 ladies. Fatima is a centenarian (a person who is a hundred or more years old), yet she has a zest for life that makes her appear at least forty years younger. Her group has given her the loving nickname "Umena," which translates to "mother." This title is appropriate, and not simply to carry because of her age. Fatima is a seven-time mother. She was also the first in her birthplace of Maqal, Sudan, to establish a school specifically for girls. Each group consists of fifteen to twenty-five individuals, mostly women, who get together on a regular basis to save money in a secure environment. The funds are utilized to assist one another in starting enterprises, negotiating reasonable prices in the marketplace, promoting gender equality in their local communities, and pursuing public office. To purchase a hand mixer for baking and selling, someone else borrowed money. Fatima is from Sudan, just like a lot of the women refugees in Egypt. She has spent the last 13 years in Cairo due to the unrest in her native country. According to a UN assessment, women like Fatima and the others in her group head 57% of the homes who apply for asylum. She does, however, intend to return to Sudan someday in order to be reunited with her children, who are now scattered all over the world. There are tens of thousands of Indians imprisoned in foreign jails in West Asian nations. In UAE alone, there are more than 900 Indian prisoners stuck in jails for years over alleged espionage, illegal immigration, and other reasons. Merchant wants to ensure that all Indian prisoners stuck in the UAE jail can be released and reunited with their families ahead of the Holy Month of Ramadan. “Prominent Dubai-based Indian businessman and philanthropist Firoz Merchant of Pure Gold has donated close to Rs 2.25 Crores (AED 1 million) to ensure the release of 900 prisoners from jails across the Arabian nation,” said a statement from his office. Who is Firoz Merchant? Firoz Merchant, 66, is an Indian businessman, based in UAE, who is known for his philanthropy work. He is the founder and chairman of Pure Gold Group and Pure Gold Jewellers. Pure Gold Jewellers is one of the most popular jewellery retailers with more than 120 stores across the Middle East. He is a well-known industrialist in the Middle East and ranked No. 26 on the Forbes Middle East List of Indian Owners 2014. This is not the first time that Merchant has taken the initiative to free Indian prisoners. In the past, he had contributed towards correctional institutions to release prisoners belonging to various nationalities jailed in the UAE. He has already paid 150,000 dirhams for the release of 132 prisoners from Ajman Central jail. Merchant does all his philanthropy work under the aegis of The Forgotten Society initiative founded in 2008. Muzaffarpur Railway Police Officer Transforms Lives Through Rail Police Pathshala

In a heartwarming initiative, Kumar Ashish, a railway police officer in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, has taken on the role of a teacher to provide free education to disadvantaged children. His brainchild, the Rail Police Pathshala, aims to prevent vulnerable children from falling into a life of crime. Ashish, a dedicated IPS officer, inaugurated the Rail Police Pathshala on August 15, Independence Day. The school, operating out of the Muzaffarpur railway junction, currently has around 25-30 students. Railway personnel, including the SP, DSP, GRP's SHO, SIs, and constables, take turns teaching the children after finishing their official duties. The Rail Police Pathshala offers a safe and nurturing environment for ragpickers, abandoned, and needy children. Each child is provided with essential stationery items, including a bag and slate. The school also encourages children already enrolled in government schools to attend tutorial classes at the Pathshala, ensuring they receive additional support and guidance. Ashish's preventive policing approach aims to transform the lives of these children, giving them a chance for a better future. Under his leadership, five more Rail Police Pathshalas are set to open at railway stations in Samastipur, Chhapra, Siwan, Darbhanga, and Hajipur by the end of this month. The initiative has already yielded positive results, with enrolled students showing remarkable changes in behavior and attitude. Ashish, who considers teaching his hobby, passionately fulfills his social obligations by spearheading such initiatives wherever he is posted. Through the Rail Police Pathshala, Kumar Ashish is not only educating children but also instilling hope, breaking the cycle of poverty, and building responsible citizens who can contribute positively to society.

One Teacher's Mission to Save Children from the Clutches of Cellphones

Tukaram Adsul, a dedicated teacher from Ahmednagar district, is on a mission to keep his students engaged and away from excessive cellphone usage. Every day, despite the scorching heat and challenging terrain, the 52-year-old zilla parishad teacher carries two bags filled with storybooks, novels, and comics to visit his students' homes near Gitewadi village. The children, currently enjoying their summer vacation, eagerly await his arrival to exchange the books they read the previous week. Since his transfer to Gitewadi in 2018, Adsul has been actively promoting a reading culture among the children. He established a library in the ZP school with the help of community participation and donations, housing hundreds of books. On Saturdays, he introduced a unique initiative where students come to school solely to read storybooks, leaving their school bags behind. Starting with illustrated books published by the State Council of Educational Research and Training, Adsul distributed books to underprivileged children. As they developed an interest in reading, they craved more. Adsul sought the help of villagers, encouraging them to donate books for birthdays and weddings. Understanding each student's preferences, he ensures to bring books tailored to their liking during his visits. Adsul's students have surpassed their age in terms of language proficiency, tackling newspapers and articles that resonate with them. His future plans include introducing English storybooks, gradually increasing the difficulty level. With every visit, Tukaram Adsul ignites a passion for reading within his students, ensuring that their summer vacations are filled with knowledge, imagination, and a lifelong love for books.

Against All Odds: The Inspiring Tale of a Headmaster's Triumph Over Adversity

With a heart full of determination, Kripashanker Srivastava, the headmaster of a school in Chikladih, set out to transform the school into a place where learning was not just a chore but an enjoyable experience. Srivastava faced numerous challenges when he took charge of the school in 2011. Poor infrastructure, low enrollment, and negligent teachers were just a few of the problems he encountered. However, he was determined to create a positive atmosphere for the students and turn the school into a happy place for learning. Rather than asking for government support, Srivastava used his own funds to bring about a change in the school environment. He contributed one day's income from his monthly salary for over 10 years, completely renovating the school and creating a magnificent garden and platform with added educational values. Srivastava's efforts have paid off as parents now line up to get their children admitted to the school. He has sensitized and encouraged the local community to send their children to school by organizing events, distributing free textbooks and pens, and taking students on picnics. Under Srivastava's leadership, the strength of students rose from 30 to 75, and the number of students attending classes increased from 25 to 65. He went beyond the role of an educator and inspired parents and students to such an extent that admissions have increased by over three-fold. Srivastava's innovative ideas have included developing a garden and constructing a platform to conduct game-based learning activities, installing attractive school gates, organizing sports activities, and converting a five-acre encroached-upon land for the school into a beautiful garden. Srivastava's commitment to his school has made him an inspiration to others. His accomplishments have been applauded by the district education officer and social activists alike. Srivastava's story is proof that with strong willpower, determination, and innovation, it is possible to create a positive learning environment even in the most challenging circumstances.

Stories of Joy and Sorrow: How Block-level Clubs in Jharkhand Help the Elderly Deal with Loneliness

Narayan Poddar, a sixty-year-old man, looks upon a group of attentive students. Taking them back sixty years, he begins to tell them stories of his days as a student. His audience is the Jamtara Deputy Commissioner, Faiz Ahmed Mumtaz, who is listening with rapt attention. Mumtaz has been instrumental in setting up block-level clubs in each of Jharkhand’s six blocks. Through these clubs, the elderly can spend time together and share their sorrows and joys. Poddar, the president of the elders club in Narayanpur block, is one of the many who benefit. About 10% of Jharkhand’s population (nine lakh) is over the age of sixty. With these clubs, the elderly can engage in activities like reading, playing board games and watching television, combatting loneliness and sharing stories. Mumtaz’s efforts were recognized and he was awarded The Indian Express Excellence in Governance Awards. The biennial awards recognize the outstanding work done by District Magistrates, men and women who are regarded as the backbone of the government and who direct change that affects the lives of countless people all over the nation. The cost of renovating each building for the club was 3-3.5 lakhs, with other amenities such as TVs and refrigerators being crowd-sourced. Each of the 25 members at the Narayanpur club takes on the responsibility to maintain the club. While some people clean, others water the plants, and some people, like Poddar, chat with the occasional visitor. They all have stories to tell, which is something they have in common. Poddar remarks, “I talk to my friend. I try to understand what his faith is. He tries to understand mine.” The block-level clubs in Jharkhand are a gift of togetherness, bringing the elderly out of loneliness and offering them a platform to share their wisdom and experiences.

He Is Just 24 Years Old and His Poems Are Taught in Universities!

Ramesh Karthik Nayak had a flair for writing and he worked as a steward at catering events to help pay for the publication of his books. The 24-year-old Banjara poet and writer has been penning articles on Banjara communities' culture and way of life, with a touch of fiction. Ramesh Karthik wrote several works, one of them being Baldair Bandi (bullock cart). The book, which describes the indigenous community of the Banjara or Lambadi in detail, has just been added to the Andhra University curriculum. It was also introduced as the third lesson in the second unit of the fourth semester for MA Telugu Language and Literature. The Telugu literary course at the SR&BGNR Government Degree College, Khammam, Kakatiya University includes a poem from the book "Jarer Bati" (Sorghum Roti). Born to farmer parents in the tiny hamlet of Nizamabad, Ramesh was encouraged by his teacher to try his hand at writing. When he faced financial limitations to publish his books, he worked as a steward at catering events. Ramesh explained that there was an unbreakable bond between the bullock cart and Lambadis when asked why the book was called "Baldair Bandi." The book was published in 2018 and placed on a shortlist for the Kendra Sahitya Academy Yuva Puraskar in 2021. Along with "Baldair Bandi," Ramesh's other book, "Dhavlo," a collection of Telugu-language Gor Banjara short stories, was also nominated for the same award in 2022.

Chetana Sinha – Her Power of Empathy Made Her the Founder of India’s First Women’s Cooperative Bank

Chetana Sinha, a humble, but strong woman with grit and determination opened India’s first cooperative bank for women. Born and brought up in the throbbing Mumbai city, the spirit of activism and social change were kindled in her early on. It all started way back in the 1990s when some women asked Sinha for assistance. According to Sinha, all they sought was to open a savings account, but due to their "low-savings format," they were turned down. She decided to assist them in establishing a cooperative bank. However, the central bank rejected their idea because the women were illiterate. Not to be let down, these remarkable ladies took it upon themselves to learn to read and write. After six months, the cooperative received approval, and Mann Deshi Bank was established. This happened to be just the beginning as Sinha went on to launch many more initiatives as a solution to varied problems. As many talented women didn’t know how to market their products, Sinha started a business school for them. She also launched the community radio to provide a platform for women to share their stories of triumph and encourage families to support women. For being a beacon of hope and inspiration to countless women, Sinha has won innumerable recognition and awards including the Nari Shakti Puraskar, India's highest civilian award for women who work in the area of women's empowerment.

Shankar Venkatraman had everything that one aspires for- a degree in technology from BITS Pilani, a job in California, he got married and has a lovely daughter. All that changed when his daughter was diagnosed with eczema and he was told that one of the causes of eczema is the chemicals in food. His daughter’s condition affected him and he constantly thought about what he could have done to stop her from getting the skin disease. He stopped consuming food that he didn’t see grow himself. One thing led to another and he returned to his hometown in India with the intention of farming, but he had no idea that he would meet with great success. Gaining The Farmer’s Trust His success can be attributed to the way he treated the people who worked for him. He didn’t treat them as farmworkers but looked after them as a family, supported their children’s education and offered them three meals a day. This made the farmers try the right way of farming without risking their money or their lives and in the process, he gained their trust and love. He convinced them that suicide was not the only way out and explained to them the innumerable benefits of organic farming. A Whole Community Benefits From Farming Shankar acquired land, but it took almost a year to make it fit for organic farming. However, once he got started, the gains from it were very huge. He purchased European farming tools to make the process easy for the farmers. He created a community of people who cared for each other and would stand by him even at the worse time. He even began to teach his successful farming techniques to students from agriculture colleges. Currently, Shankar runs a 60acre organic farm funding and supporting 90 farmer families from remote villages in Tirunelveli. Shankar’s farming community supplies fruits and vegetables plucked right from the plants to over 1000 customers within the Bangalore city. Shankar does his work with pride and passion. Beyond this, India has retained its third position globally in annual net forest gain, signaling consistent progress in ecological conservation. India’s Forest Cover in NumbersThe FAO report shows that India’s forest cover stands at 72.7 million hectares in 2025, accounting for about 2 percent of the world’s forests. Beginning on Saturday, people began celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganeshotsav. The event is most widely observed in Maharashtra, where Hindu devotees installed idols of Lord Ganesha in homes, temples, and public pandals to mark the deity's birth. ‘Shikhandi’, Maharashtra's first-ever transgender dhol-tasha group, made history during the festivities by doing a performance at the renowned Bhausaheb Rangari Ganpati Mandal in Pune.About Shikhandi ~(Source: Google Images) According to a report in The Bridge Chronicle, Manasvi Goilkar created Shikhandi, a group of thirty members, after being turned down by numerous dhol-tasha troupes. In dhol-tasha, an area where male and female troupes have historically predominated, Goilkar and the team aim to represent and provide space for the transgender population.According to the article, the ensemble debuted on August 16 at a state-level event in Nanded. The ensemble is scheduled to play at five renowned Ganpati mandals in Pune this year. Traditionally, the transgender community has been involved in dancing, and blessing families on auspicious occasions. Sonawane explained that their aim is to elevate the community’s pride, where, for some, it serves as an income source, while for others, it’s about asserting their identity.Teju, a transwoman and member, highlighted the importance of art and culture within their community, saying that dancing, singing, and performing are inherited legacies, making them natural artists.Shikhandi is optimistic as the group receives support ~ (Source: Google Images) The group has received a lot of support despite early obstacles, according to Teju, who also notes that people now recognize their efforts and sympathize with their problems. Mhaswandi's Water Warriors: A Community's Fight Against Drought

In the heart of Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district, the women of Mhaswandi village have taken a bold step to secure their water future. Situated about 93 kilometers from the district capital, this small community faced a severe water shortage last year due to scanty rainfall, which left their primary water sources perilously low. In a remarkable display of foresight and unity, the women proposed a resolution to the Gram Panchayat in April, urging residents to use tap water on alternate days to conserve their precious supply. This proactive measure highlights the resilience and resourcefulness of Mhaswandi's women as they navigate the challenges of water scarcity. "We did this to make sure we had enough water saved for the dry months," Chaaya Rajaram Bodke, 45, stated. She claimed that Mhaswandi had very little rainfall in the previous year, which caused the three lakes that serve as the village's primary water supply to drop in level. Thus, this year the women made the decision to not take any chances. But the people abandoned the alternate-day plan by the first week of June. "Last week, we had 40 mm of rain," Bodke said to IndiaSpend on June 10. "We'll be OK according to our village's water budget." The practice of comparing the overall amount of water needed by a community for agricultural, residential usage, and drinking to the total amount of water available from various sources is known as water budgeting. The Mhaswandi community was taught how to calculate their water budget by Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR), a non-profit organization based in Pune that works with rural communities to reduce poverty via efficient management of their ecosystem. Water Scarcity: Holding Back Rural Women (Source: Google Images) Bhagwat Ramrao Gavande, a farmer in Kolegaon village, Jalna district, is certain of the amount of rainfall their hamlet received the week before. He explained that the purpose of this calibration is to educate the community about the importance of conserving rainwater and other resources, like "switching to crops that are not water-guzzlers," so they won't experience water scarcity during the dry months. "Our village's wells used to have water in them for roughly six to eight months during the hotter months, but that ended a few years ago," he said. "But that isn't the case anymore." The Jalna district has areas that are in the Guaranteed Rainfall Zone. However, in recent years, this area has experienced more frequent instances of water scarcity and summertime drought-like conditions. In the five years between 2017 and 2021, Kolegaon experienced just 458 mm of rainfall, according to a WOTR analysis. According to Eshwer Kale of WOTR, this is almost 27% less than the region's typical of 630–640 mm. Jalna is not the only place seeing the effects of changing weather patterns. A severe water scarcity affected many regions of the nation, including Delhi, the nation's capital, during the height of this summer. However, the implementation of a water budget, rainwater collection, agricultural modifications, and even aquifer management has assisted Jalna settlements in gradually becoming more adaptable to climate change and self-sufficient in water. Plugging the hole with water stewardship ~ The Water Stewardship Initiative (WSI) of WOTR is important in this regard since it empowers communities with the knowledge and ability to use the water resources responsibly and sustainably. After starting with 100 drought-prone villages in Maharashtra and six in Telangana, this effort has expanded to 356 villages in four states, including Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand. A few villages in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan have also adopted it. There are four primary parts to the Water Stewardship Initiative, which sees community members as water stewards: assisting in the community's evaluation of the village's water quality, which includes a groundwater level assessment and a surface water body analysis Pre-summer water budget preparation, which involves calculating the amount of water needed for all household and livestock uses over the entire agricultural year, which runs from June to April. Rainwater gathering, crop variety, and water-saving irrigation techniques are all part of the water harvesting and conservation plan. establishing societal norms for water management, such as limiting the use of water-intensive crops, regulating borewells to prevent overexploitation, and prohibiting the direct pumping of water from shared surface water bodies. Changes Made in The Cropping Pattern ~ According to Gavande, cotton cultivated on 2.5 acres of land needs 10 million liters of water, but with drip irrigation, only 6.5 million liters are needed. "Although it took some time for people to accept these modifications, our village's 458 acres of arable land are now 313 acres under drip irrigation. Soybean production has grown but cotton production has decreased. Also, we are cultivating multiple crops rather than simply one." For example, Gavande grows cotton, maize, soybeans, and chilies on his four acres of property. According to 23-year-old Gopal Gajanand Jadhav, "70% of farmers now rely on drip irrigation" in the same district's Bori hamlet. Not only that, but the water-guzzling crop, sugarcane has almost completely stopped being grown here by the farmers who originally farmed it. Rather, they cultivate a variety of crops, including cotton, chili, and soybeans. Farmers in the Dharashiv district have also been able to plant more fruiting trees, such as mango, guava, and dragonfruit, thanks to their excellent understanding of water regulation. The majority of farmers in Dharashiv produce soybeans, but an increasing number are now planting fruit trees, which use less water, according to district superintendent agricultural officer Ravindra Mane, who spoke with IndiaSpend.Jadhav continued, saying that they have almost completely halted drilling wells in Bori village in order to extract groundwater. Water Stewardship Also Has The Potential to Alleviate the Increasing Privatisation of Water for Drinking and Other Domestic Purposes ~ For example, the Kolegaon water management committee, of which Gavande is a member, was taken aback when the village's water health was initially rated as "ill." There was not a major shortage of drinking water in the village. The community did, however, come to realize that during the dry summer months, there was a significant reliance on private water tankers. As part of their water harvesting plan, the community chose to fix abandoned water collecting facilities, build some new ones, identify farmers who practice water conservation, etc. A total of 102.6 million liters of water were harvested in 2016, 143.1 million liters in 2018, and 356.3 million liters in 2021. The good news is that communities embrace water management wherever it is introduced. The Indian Railways has taken a remarkable step towards social progress and inclusivity by setting up a ‘trans tea stall’ at the Guwahati railway platform. The North East Frontier Railway and the All Assam Transgender Association are the brainchild behind the initiative. The bright pink-colored tea stall has been heavily decorated and is managed by members of the transgender community who sells tea, cold drinks, fruit juice and biscuits. Billionaire Anand Mahindra lauded this initiative and praised Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for being progressive. In his tweet, he mentioned that this small initiative is as transformational as the other progressive projects, and most importantly, it excludes no one. Twitter users also flooded the comment section to gush about the inclusive initiative. It is heartening to see that initiatives like these are becoming more common in recent years. Companies are now also suggested to include more trans people in their talent hunt and D&I programmes. One Twitter user wrote that all companies should have started some percentage of hiring them on a compulsory basis as well. Assam Transgender Welfare Board Associate Vice Chairman Swati Bidhan Baruah stated her hope that more trans and gender non-conforming people would be empowered and able to find productive employment under various government programs. In order to empower members of the trans and queer communities, NF Railways aims to open additional tea shops at other train stations in the region. This Odisha Hospital Sets a Good Example by Employing Transgenders As Security Guards

The Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Odisha has taken a significant step to make society more inclusive and to empower the LGBTQIA+ community members by hiring five transgender individuals as security guards. he five transgenders are delighted at this opportunity of working in a hospital and being able to lead an independent life. They are appointed as security guards at gynaecology and paediatric wards of the hospital and are entitled to a remuneration of Rs 6000 to Rs 7000 with insurance and other facilities. The transgenders were appointed under the Nirmal scheme. The Malkangiri District Police trained them before they were absorbed into the hospital. According to a report in Sambad English, there are various schemes under the Nirmal Yojna which also includes providing jobs to third gender people. One of the security guards names Kailash Dora said that after undergoing training for 15 days, he joined the hospital and was very happy about it. He works in the hospital for eight hours and takes care of patients. This important step under the Nirmal Yojna to employ transgender individuals in the health sector will go a long way in making society inclusive and enabling the third gender community to lead a life of dignity. India’s First ‘Time Bank’ to Come Up in Madhya Pradesh

Time Banks are gradually gaining popularity around the world. It involves the exchange of work hours for any service required without money changing hands. The time bank allows an individual to offer voluntary services in return for credit hours, a record of which will be kept in the time bank. When this individual needs any service, he can get repaid by another volunteer on the basis of the credit hours he had earned earlier. Encourages Community Ties Time Banks help individuals to help one another in exchange for hourly time credits. One can opt for any form of voluntary service like teaching underprivileged children or looking after elderly persons and get paid in kind for the credit hours earned. People willing to help and those in need of help are brought on a single platform through time banks. A person need not help the same person who had helped him but can assist anyone in need in the bank’s network. Community Level Banks According to The Hindu, the Madhya Pradesh government’s happiness department planned to set up a time bank that would lend currency to an hour which could then be exchanged for services. Around 50,000 volunteers who have already registered with the department through local networks will form community-level banks and list the skills and services they could impart. Time banks need to be propagated as it encourages people to volunteer and builds strong social ties and community trust. While it rewards all work including unpaid and care work, people with low incomes can get access to services which they otherwise may not be able to afford.

A Couple Whose House Was Destroyed by Fire Was Surprised to See Villagers Build a New House for Them in a Day

Nokhat Konyak and his wife Hailem are both farm labourers in Zangkham village in Nagaland. Once, they had left early morning for their work and on their return were devastated to see their house totally engulfed in flames. At once, they felt as if it was the end of their small world. However, what followed was something that we can hardly imagine, but at the same time is very heartwarming. The Konyal community in the village took the matter into their own hands and started rebuilding the helpless couple’s house. The couple had lost everything in the fire. The cause of the fire which took place around 7 am couldn’t be ascertained, but it is presumed that the couple might have forgotten to put off the flame of the firewood after cooking. The couple was relieved and touched to see the villagers join hands and work in unison to ensure that they complete building the house before sunset. If that was not enough, the villagers, taking note of the fact that the couple had lost everything and all their means of survival were destroyed, provided them with utensils, food, clothes, bed, blankets and other useful articles. Later, the couple was provided financial assistance from the emergency relief fund by the government authorities. This act of brotherhood by the villagers is truly commendable as they skipped a whole day’s work and put in all their time and efforts to build a shelter for a brother who lost everything to a devastating fire. This story is a testimony to all the goodness that human beings possess and are capable of sharing.

This Fridge Is A Boon For The Poor

In Bengaluru, Indira Canteens and Appaji Canteens render three meals a day to the people at subsidized rates.Now, Umeed charitable group has taken it a step further by installing a 6-feet-tall fridge under the 'Free food for the poor' board in the premises of 'Happy Plate' hotel in Koramangala which stocks leftover food from the eatery. This initiative is making waves in the city as the hungry and homeless get free food. Anyone can open the fridge and take whatever they wish to have. The fridge has been operational since November 9. Leftover food items like palav, Uppittu-kesaribath, wangibat, poori/chapati, sagu, chutney, sambar etc from the hotel finds a place in the fridge which is then devoured by the needy. A spokesperson for the charity said that instead of wasting leftover food, they decided that it could be given to the poor who are going hungry every day. Other restaurants like Rayal Treat, Heera Sagar, Udupi Bhavan and some food outlets have also pitched in and are supplying a sizable quantity of meals. Another member of the charity said that they are raising awareness about this initiative through social media and interested people who wish to contribute and help are welcome. A plan to provide financial assistance to the treatment of poor patients is also in the making.

A Library Asked for a Few Helping Hands and Was Amazed by the Response

A library in Oklahoma asked for a few helping hands on social media to move children’s books to a new location down the street and was overwhelmed by the huge turnout. More than 650 volunteers including kids, adults and seniors arrived at the place and formed a human chain between the two buildings. One by one, they enthusiastically passed the books down the line and the work was accomplished within 45 minutes. The Norman Public Library The Norman Public Library in Oklahoma serves three surrounding counties. It had decided to shift children’s books from the old brick building to a new location situated quarter of a mile from it. They planned to make this a community event that could bring book lovers together and therefore, posted about the moving event on Facebook asking for a few volunteers. They were delighted to see more than 650 people arrive for the event. Human Chain The volunteers formed a human chain between the two libraries and joyfully passed the books down the line. All the books were shifted in a matter of 45 minutes. Kids just loved the experience and many said that they can’t wait for the new library to open. In the end, kids were overjoyed when they got to arrange a book each on the new library shelf which would forever be its home. Books are a source of great joy. The love for books brought people of a community together and they derived immense happiness from being a part of this community event involving books.

A first ever community for homeless veterans to open in Canada

Veterans who serve in the forces and retire often return with physical and psychological scars that make it difficult for them to find jobs and housing facilities. There are more than 3,500 homeless veterans in Canada. The veterans usually find it difficult to adapt to civilian life, especially if they return from an overseas mission. Some become victims of post-traumatic stress while some may fall prey to addiction. Soon, their problems will be solved as they will get homes in a community for veterans. Smart Homes The homes are tiny, each under 300 square feet which includes a kitchen, bathroom and a place to sleep. The small homes are designed in such a way that it looks spacious and has modern amenities. The house has Murphy beds that can be folded up into the wall and relatively large front desks. The occupants of the homes are also provided with cooking utensils, cleaning products and linen so that they can start their stay right away without any trouble. Other Services The houses are constructed in Calgary village where 15 houses are arranged in U shape in a green open space. The village also has a resource centre, counseling centre and a suite for visiting family members. Living in a community will help the veterans to deal with post-traumatic stress, addiction and make them more social and happy. A Canadian Organization- Homes For Heroes is helping to build these homes and tenants are chosen by The Mustard Seed, a social agency that will assess the needs of veterans experiencing homelessness.
