In an extraordinary display of determination and environmental stewardship, Thenmozhi Mohankumar, a resident of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu has turned a once-abandoned dumpsite into a breathtaking herbal garden.
Within just a year and a half, Thenmozhi, a diploma graduate, managed to convert the Balasubramaniam Nagar dumpsite in Peelamedu into a lush oasis filled with over 500 native species of trees and plants. Her unwavering dedication has not only beautified the area but also inspired the local community to adopt sustainable waste management practices.
Initially met with skepticism and opposition, Thenmozhi's project gradually won over the residents of the area. They now enthusiastically utilize the garden for leisurely walks, while students and children flock to learn about the diverse range of flora it houses.
The garden boasts rare and exotic plants, including Agarwood, Benzoin, camphor, and medicinal plants, along with unique fruit varieties native to the Western Ghats. Thanks to Thenmozhi's farming background and passion for gardening, the herbal haven is meticulously maintained in a natural and sustainable manner.
The success of the project wouldn't have been possible without the support of volunteers and contributions from organizations like Siruthuli. The park stands as a tribute to the late educationist CR Swaminathan, who served as Thenmozhi's mentor. The residents actively participate in the garden's upkeep and benefit from its produce.
