His father, Ramkrishna Suryabhan Gavai, widely known as Dadasaheb, was a respected Dalit leader and former Governor of Bihar. Inspired by this legacy, Justice Gavai entered the legal profession in 1985 and went on to practice constitutional and administrative law.He served as counsel for key municipal bodies and educational institutions in Maharashtra, building a reputation as a committed and principled advocate. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003 and confirmed as a Permanent Judge in 2005, before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019.Judicial Contributions and Landmark RulingsWith nearly 300 authored judgments and involvement in around 700 benches, his influence spans constitutional, civil, environmental, and criminal jurisprudence. Among his most notable contributions are his role in upholding the abrogation of Article 370. His verdict in the Manish Sisodia bail case underscored the importance of personal liberty.
