"Dream, Dream, Dream! Conduct these dreams into thoughts, and then transform them into action."

In a quiet corner of Ramavarmapuram, a locality nestled in the heart of Thrissur city, Kerala, something magical happened on July 7. Inside a government-run old age home, two hearts that had faced the many seasons of life found warmth and love in each other’s company. Vijayaraghavan (79) and Sulochana (75) weren’t looking for love. But as life often surprises us, they found in each other not just a friend but a soulmate.
Their paths crossed in the corridors of the facility, where Vijayaraghavan had been living since 2019. Sulochana, who moved in only in 2024, gradually formed a bond with him. Over cups of tea, morning walks, and shared silences, friendship slowly turned into something deeper. When the couple expressed their desire to be together legally, the Social Justice Department of Kerala stepped in. In a heartwarming ceremony attended by Higher Education and Social Justice Minister Dr. R. Bindu, City Mayor M.K. Varghese, staff, and fellow residents, they tied the knot under the Special Marriage Act.
The story quickly went viral, resonating with people across generations. Photos and videos of the elderly couple exchanging garlands and smiling gently at each other were shared widely with the caption: “It’s never too late to find love.” In a world where loneliness often shadows the lives of the elderly, especially in institutional care, this moment became a glowing reminder that affection, understanding, and hope are ageless. Their union also served as a powerful statement about the importance of emotional support for senior citizens and the progressive role of government institutions in making such humane decisions possible.
What made this story even more special was the way it was received and supported. The Social Justice Department of Kerala, after hearing the couple’s wish to marry, organized an official ceremony under the Special Marriage Act. Higher Education and Social Justice Minister Dr. R. Bindu, who attended the ceremony, called it a moment of deep personal honor. Thrissur City Mayor M.K. Varghese and several local officials were also present, celebrating the couple like family. Dr. Bindu later shared on Facebook: “I was honoured to be a witness to this beautiful moment. May their days ahead be filled with love and joy.” The event was filled with warmth and simplicity. There were no grand decorations or lavish feasts—only genuine emotion, pure joy, and the quiet strength of two hearts choosing each other.
As Vijayaraghavan and Sulochana begin this new journey together, they do so with the blessing of an entire community, not just within the home, but across the country. Their story is now part of a greater conversation about aging with dignity, emotional support in old age, and breaking the loneliness of institutional living. Their days may be quieter now, their steps slower, but their hearts are full. And that’s what makes their union so beautiful, not the ceremony, but the courage it took to choose each other.
In a world that often measures love by youth, appearance, or timelines, Vijayaraghavan and Sulochana have reminded us of something far more important: Love is not about age; it’s about the heart. Their story teaches us that it's never too late to hope, to dream, or to find someone to walk with even in the final chapter of life. And sometimes, that chapter can turn out to be the most beautiful one of all.
