The Ram Temple in Ayodhya witnessed a spectacular event on Ram Navami as a beam of sunlight, known as 'Surya Tilak', was delicately directed onto the forehead of the revered Ram Lalla idol. This unique phenomenon, achieved through state-of-the-art engineering, marked a significant blend of tradition and innovation at this sacred site. Engineering Excellence: Designing the 'Surya Tilak' Mechanism Led by a team of ten esteemed Indian scientists stationed at the Ram Mandir, this awe-inspiring achievement was made possible by the creation of a specialized apparatus named the 'Surya Tilak mechanism'. This apparatus comprises a sophisticated arrangement of mirrors, lenses, and a tilt mechanism designed to capture and redirect sunlight with pinpoint accuracy. Dr. Pradeep Kumar Ramacharla, Scientist and Director at the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, elucidated the intricate workings of this opto-mechanical marvel. The system includes four mirrors and four lenses strategically positioned within a tilt mechanism and piping infrastructure. By manipulating the tilt of these mirrors, sunlight is meticulously channeled and focused onto the idol's forehead, creating the sacred 'Surya Tilak' during the auspicious hours of Ram Navami. Precision Engineering: The Science Behind the Ritual The 'Surya Tilak mechanism' not only embodies scientific ingenuity but also upholds the sanctity of the traditional ritual associated with Ram Navami. It is carefully crafted using durable materials like brass and high-quality mirrors and lenses. This apparatus ensures sustained performance and accuracy year after year. Critical components such as pipes, elbows, and enclosures are meticulously coated to prevent light scattering, guaranteeing a focused beam of sunlight for the ceremonial anointment. Additionally, it is expected to play a vital role in boosting tourism.  Unveiling the Impressive Specifications The Chenab Bridge reaches a staggering height of 1,178 feet above the riverbed, making it 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower. It is a part of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project, which aims to improve connectivity in the challenging topography and weather conditions of Jammu and Kashmir. The new bridge will usher in an era of increased train speeds, higher weight-carrying capacity, and a surge in traffic to the famous Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi temples. Here are some noteworthy facts about the New Pamban Bridge: This bridge will replace the iconic Pamban Bridge, India's inaugural sea bridge inaugurated in 1914.It boasts a total length of 2.078 km and an estimated project cost of ₹279.63 crore. Pune’s  College of Military Engineering (CME) has proudly announced its transformation into the country's first carbon-negative military formation. This milestone was reached with the unveiling of a state-of-the-art 5-megawatt (MW) solar power plant. With this, the institution's solar power generation capacity increased to an impressive 7 MW.  The term 'carbon negative' signifies an entity's ability to emit less than zero carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) greenhouse gases. This is achieved through ingenious processes such as carbon capture, sequestration, and avoidance, which collectively offset more carbon than the entity introduces into the environment. Established in 1948 as a distinguished educational institution for the armed forces, the CME plays a pivotal role in training personnel across all ranks of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, in addition to training foreign military members on diverse technical and tactical aspects of evolving warfare strategies. In recent times, the College of Military Engineering has undertaken an array of forward-thinking projects to significantly reduce its carbon footprint. Spearheaded by the Military Engineering Services (MES) through the office of Garrison Engineer (CME), Khadki, these initiatives have yielded impressive results, the most prominent being the phased implementation of the 7-MW solar power plant. The journey towards carbon neutrality commenced with the commissioning of a 2-MW solar power plant in 2021. That effectively catered to a substantial portion of the institution's daytime energy requirements. The true turning point was the completion of the second phase, resulting in a 5-MW solar power plant. This achievement was pivotal in realizing the objectives outlined in the 'National Solar Mission' under the Government of India. Beyond the obvious environmental contributions, the CME has emerged as a harbinger of fiscal savings. With an estimated annual saving of Rs 6.5 crore to the national treasury, this achievement underscores the economic viability of renewable energy initiatives.

This decision comes as a step forward in expanding employment opportunities for women officers and fulfilling their professional aspirations within the TA. The Territorial Army, which follows a citizen soldiers' army concept, began commissioning women officers in 2019, primarily in Ecological Task Force Units, TA Oil sector units, and TA Railway Engineer Regiment. Building upon the experience gained during this period, the scope for further employment of women officers within the TA has been extended. This move aims to provide women officers with equal opportunities to serve and train alongside their male counterparts in a wider range of units and appointments. Established in its present form in 1948, the Territorial Army serves as an auxiliary military force, relieving the Regular Army from static duties and assisting civil administration during times of natural calamities and essential service maintenance. With a strength of approximately 40,000 individuals, the TA comprises infantry battalions, ecological task force units, railway engineer units, oil sector units, and engineer units responsible for fencing the Line of Control. By allowing women officers to serve in Engineer Regiments of the Territorial Army, the Indian Army is taking a significant step towards inclusivity and gender equality within the armed forces. Good News As Robotic Machines To Replace Manual Scavenging

Cleaning of sewers and septic tanks is hazardous and often leads to death by asphyxiation due to poisonous gases. The inhuman practice of manual scavenging had been outlawed in India since 1993, but it continues to persist in some areas due to a lack of proper infrastructure and enforcement of the law. However, now there is a ray of hope. A team of 11 engineers from Kottayam's Saintgits College of Engineering have created a semi-autonomous sewer cleaning robot that can do eight different actions. The robot, SEWSCAV 22.0, was recently introduced at the college during a brief ceremony and is now being used for internal services on the college grounds. The project's conception and implementation were overseen by the team's leader,  Harinarayanan Nampoothiri M.G., Assistant Professor in the Robotics and Automation stream. He said that the mechanical engineering department of the college's labs and workshops housed all of the machinery used in machining, fabrication, and mechanical assembly while the automation system synthesis, assembly, micro-controller programming, and testing were done in the robotics lab. In order to allow mobile phones to control the robot's navigation and scavenging system, the team has also created an indigenous Android application. The robotics team programmed microcontrollers with over 1,400 lines of code, which gives the robot its intelligence. A more advanced industrial version of the robot is now being designed, allowing for stronger mechanical motions using hydraulics and utilizing Artificial Intelligence and Digital Image Processing technology to make the robot more autonomous. The development of a robot to perform this task could potentially help to put an end to the practice of manual scavenging, and it is certainly an interesting and innovative idea.

The Tallest Bridge in the World Is in India and It Is an Engineering Marvel!

The Chenab bridge, an engineering feat, can easily find its way into the wonders of modern India. With its completion, India will add another feather to its cap as it will be the tallest bridge in the world. The Chenab bridge is a concrete arch bridge constructed in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. For the first time since Indian independence, the Kashmir Valley will have all-weather rail access from the rest of India thanks to the Chenab bridge which is a project of USBRL(Udhampur - Srinagar - Baramulla rail link project). The bridge, which is built over the Chenab river, is 1177 feet above the riverbed. It is 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It is built to withstand earthquake forces of the greatest intensity zone-V as well as strong winds up to 266 km/h. The most advanced "Tekla" software is used for structural details using structural steel suited for temperatures between -10°C and 40°C. To get to this point, the engineers and railway officials had to overcome several obstacles, including those posed by the geology, the tough terrain, and the hostile climate. The project is regarded as one of the most difficult infrastructure initiatives made by the Indian Railways in the post-Independence era.

Engineering Syllabus to Undergo Major Changes

In the age of Artificial Intelligence and bullet trains, teaching decade-old technologies are passé and the engineering syllabus needs a to be revamped to include big data analysis and Internet of Things(IoT). Considering this, the new academic session starting next July will have a revised engineering syllabus that is designed to make Indian engineers more employable through practical learning and new courses. A top official of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the body that regulates technical education in the country said that the changed syllabus will tackle the issue of dwindling placements of fresh engineering graduates. Out of the 3,000 registered Indian engineering institutes, which produce an estimated 7 lakh engineers every year, barely half of them are able to secure a job on campus. According to AICTE, out of a total of 7.58 lakh graduates, only 3.34 lakh got jobs through campus placements in 2015-16. Therefore, the AICTE has prepared the revised engineering curriculum as per the recommendations of 11 subject committees it had set up for engineering and technical institutes, excluding the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs). The curriculum has been approved by the human resource development ministry. Graduates need to be aware of recent trends and their application in the real world. They should be equipped with the latest developments and advancements that will give them an edge and help them to get hired.

Sushil Kumar, a railway engineer, embarked on a remarkable journey to transform the lives of underprivileged children in Delhi. Visionary Scholar: 32-Year-Old Software Engineer Empowers Visually Impaired Children in Tamil Nadu with Education Mission

Gomathi K, a 32-year-old software engineer, is on a mission to educate visually impaired children in Tamil Nadu. Gomathi completed her studies from a government school and went on to take a bachelor’s degree in engineering. She is now a successful software engineer based in Germany. Gomathi started her mission by helping visually-impaired children pay their fees, but soon she dug deeper to find out their everyday battles. She took the help of visually-impaired people who were skilled in teaching to assist these dropouts. Eventually, she began to convert important study material for competitive exams, including bank tests and UPSC exams, into audio books. Gomathi even organised health camps and workshops specifically for visually impaired children. With the assistance of her friends and guided volunteers, she has produced over 300 audio recordings to support visually impaired individuals. She is continuously working towards empowering the visually impaired community, especially children. Gomathi and her group of friends are planning on converting more books to audio files. "The ongoing project involves transforming the book ‘India Varalatril Bhagavad Geethai’ into an audio format," says Gomathi. Apart from this, Gomathi is also part of a team called ‘Our Village Our Responsibility,’ which was founded in the USA by a Tamil group. She works as a coordinator for the state of Tamil Nadu to provide financial assistance to students from poor farming communities and support their education. As of now, over 150 students are receiving help from the group. They have also donated 36 cows for the poor and underprivileged farmer families.

Then they decided to approach Girish Bharadwaj, a mechanical engineer who out of compassion stepped in to change their lives forever. Initially amused by the villagers' belief that all engineers could build bridges, Bharadwaj finally agreed to help them when he witnessed their dire circumstances. Drawing on knowledge from engineering friends and bridge-building books, he devised a low-cost hanging bridge through a community-driven effort. With the support of the villagers and some government assistance, the footbridge breathed new life into the community, sparking the birth of the "Bridge Man." The success of this bridge project caught the eye of a government official, propelling Bharadwaj on a journey that extended far beyond Aramburu. He adopted the technologies of iconic suspension bridges like San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and Japan's Akashi Kaikyo, simplifying them to suit local needs. His innovative suspension bridges proved to be cost-effective and resilient, standing the test of time, often surpassing their estimated lifespans. Over three decades, Bharadwaj, now fondly known as the Bridge Man, traversed the states of Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha, constructing over 130 bridges. These bridges not only connected remote villages but also uplifted the lives of countless people, earning him the esteemed Padma Shri award in 2017. The Bridge Man's journey was characterized by dedication and selflessness. In most projects, he and his team camped near the work sites, ensuring a hands-on approach to bridge construction that lasted for three to six months. Many of these endeavors were government-sponsored, while others relied on funds pooled by grateful villagers. In some cases, Bharadwaj even used his own resources to complete projects facing financial constraints. Although the demand for footbridges has waned in favor of larger RCC structures, Bharadwaj's impact on the lives of countless villagers endures. From a single act of kindness, he could bring a world of opportunities to entire communities and transform their lives for good.

The ceramic pipes, expertly crafted by the local community, were used to channel water from the elevated town into drainage ditches and eventually a moat, effectively combating the region's frequent flooding.   This discovery is a significant milestone, not only because it represents the oldest ceramic pipe system ever found globally, but also because it suggests a different trajectory for human civilization. Unlike the traditional belief that water control was dominated by centralized authorities, the drainage system at Pingliangtai reveals a model of communal organization and mutual governance.   The excavations at Pingliangtai demonstrate how environmental factors, technological advancements, and social institutions converged to form a cooperative approach to water management. Tracking Time Through the Ages: The Marvelous Astronomical Clock of Prague

The Astronomical Clock, mounted on the south wall of the Old Town Hall in Prague, is a remarkable feat of engineering. Nestled in ornate Gothic decoration, this steampunk predecessor still ticks today - and is even the oldest working clock of its kind in the world, dating back to the early 15th century. Moving effigies and a procession of the Twelve Apostles were added to the clock in the 17th century and then again in 1865, respectively. Whenever the hour strikes, the animated procession appears through two automatic windows above the main face of the clock and a skeleton statue rings a bell to signal that time is running out. On its left, a rapacious miser shakes his head in denial of death; on its right, a Turk is occupied with revelry while ignoring the summons; and, similarly, a masculine caricature of vanity looks in the mirror. A golden rooster, though, crows above them, bringing the promise of another hour of life. The clock is interesting in that it uses four separate time-telling traditions and displays 24 hours of the day instead of the usual 12 hours. A golden hand circling the clock face illuminates the outermost dial, which displays ancient Bohemian time, which was used by Europeans during the Middle Ages and has black background with gold Arabic digits. The Astronomical Clock additionally indicates stellar time; in addition to the sun's position in the sky, it also displays the moon and stars' positions. We can determine whether the moon is full, crescent, gibbous, or new by looking at a rotating silver and black lunar orb. A dial corresponding to the stars floats above the clock face and shows where the sun rises and sets against a background of the zodiac signs. This mechanical wonder is a testament to human ingenuity and our long-standing fascination with modeling the universe mechanistically. After over six centuries, it is still ticking today - which is a great engineering feat.

Some of the world’s greatest engineering marvels are a delight to witness. Be it the Chenab rail bridge in Jammu and Kashmir or Dubai’s Museum of the Future, there is no doubt that such amazing structures will leave us spellbound. One such marvelous structure is the Veluwemeer Aqueduct or the Reverse Bridge in the Netherlands. The bridge is built in such a way that vehicles crossing it appears to vanish under a section of water toward the middle of the bridge before reappearing on the other side. It gives the appearance that the cars disappear underwater before emerging from the opposite side. The road really briefly descends below the water's surface under the bridge's clever construction, which keeps it dry and still permits boats to pass through the strip of water above it. The highway  is referred to as the "coolest road in the world." It is close to Harderwijk, a Dutch city. The largest man-made island in the world, Flevoland, is connected to the mainland by this bridge. The Veluwemeer Aqueduct, which was completed in 2002, enables both waterborne and vehicular traffic to pass through the stretch without impeding the other. This unique bridge became famous as it was posted recently on Twitter by businessman and writer Vala Afshar. The post garnered a massive 4.3 million views.

This Engineer’s Amazing Use of Plastic Bottles Will Blow Your Mind!

The world is becoming increasingly aware of the need to eliminate the use of single-use plastic and one of the significant ways of doing it is by halting its production. The already existing plastic can be recycled. However, hailing from a place that did not have modern plastic recycling machines, an engineer in Algeria Tateh Lehbib Braica came up with a novel idea to make optimum use of these bottles. The 27-year-old engineer, Tateh who was born in the Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria, devised a master plan to employ all the plastic bottles to make homes for refugees. It was his brainchild to use sand-filled plastic bottles as bricks to build homes. Sturdy Homes Tateh built eco-friendly houses with sand-filled plastic bottles, cement and a mixture of earth and straw. A team of four people would use around 6000 bottles to make one house in a week. The houses were built in a circular shape in order to withstand storms. The structure was water-resistant adding to its advantage. The exterior was painted white so as to reduce the impact of solar rays by up to 90%. Grant To Build Houses After being convinced about the benefits of his newly constructed houses, Tateh convinced his community to support his innovation along with the UNHCR's Geneva HQ. The agency agreed to give them a grant which saw innumerable houses being built in the five Sahrawi refugee camps in the Algerian province of Tindouf.
