In a groundbreaking move, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has given his approval for the posting of women officers in the Engineer Regiments of the Territorial Army (TA) along the Line of Control. Additionally, they will serve as staff officers at the TA Group Headquarters and the Directorate General of Territorial Army in New Delhi. This decision comes as a step forward in expanding employment opportunities for women officers and fulfilling their professional aspirations within the TA.

The Territorial Army, which follows a citizen soldiers' army concept, began commissioning women officers in 2019, primarily in Ecological Task Force Units, TA Oil sector units, and TA Railway Engineer Regiment. Building upon the experience gained during this period, the scope for further employment of women officers within the TA has been extended. This move aims to provide women officers with equal opportunities to serve and train alongside their male counterparts in a wider range of units and appointments.

Established in its present form in 1948, the Territorial Army serves as an auxiliary military force, relieving the Regular Army from static duties and assisting civil administration during times of natural calamities and essential service maintenance. With a strength of approximately 40,000 individuals, the TA comprises infantry battalions, ecological task force units, railway engineer units, oil sector units, and engineer units responsible for fencing the Line of Control.

By allowing women officers to serve in Engineer Regiments of the Territorial Army, the Indian Army is taking a significant step towards inclusivity and gender equality within the armed forces. This decision not only empowers women officers but also enhances the overall capabilities and effectiveness of the Territorial Army in safeguarding the nation and supporting communities during times of need.
