Regardless of how vivid their imaginations are, they have a strong desire for a real experience. Here are the five must-see destinations that best reflect the essence of their favorite literary universes. 1. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter ~ Everybody has at some point in their lives opened their mailbox in the hopes of finding a letter from Hogwarts. For every reader, Harry Potter represents a milestone in life. Thus, it makes perfect sense to go and experience the wizarding world. That is something you owe your inner child, who is still pining for that letter from Hogwarts. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has theme parks in Beijing, Orlando, Osaka, and California. Visit the meticulously reconstructed Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade to purchase wands and Butterbeer and relive the Harry Potter experience. The flying car of the Weasley family is one of the rides that draws inspiration from the Harry Potter universe. Kozhikode: India’s First UNESCO City of Literature

In an illustrious recognition, Kozhikode, Kerala, has been officially declared India's first UNESCO City of Literature on June 23. This accolade places Kozhikode in the prestigious UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) under the 'Literature' category. Kozhikode, along with Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, joined the network in October 2023, on World Cities Day, highlighting India's rich cultural diversity. While Gwalior earned its place in the 'Music' category, Kozhikode's inclusion in the 'Literature' category reflects its profound literary heritage. Historically known as Calicut, Kozhikode has long been a significant cultural and commercial hub. It was once the gateway to the Indian coast for traders from Persia, Arabia, China, and Europe. The city has a rich history intertwined with literature and freedom movements. Today, Kozhikode is renowned for its vibrant literary culture, home to over 70 publishing houses producing 400 to 500 books annually and more than 500 libraries serving thousands of avid readers. The city’s literary landscape is dynamic and diverse, hosting numerous festivals year-round. Among these, the 40-day Beypore Art, Craft, Tourism, and Literature Festival stands out, commemorating the legacy of renowned author Vaikom Muhammad Basheer. Additionally, the Kerala Literature Festival, one of India's largest literary events, attracts a global audience, spotlighting authors, artists, and book professionals. The UCCN, launched in 2004, aims to harness creativity as a driver for sustainable urban development, emphasizing economic, social, cultural, and environmental growth. Cities in the network commit to sharing best practices, fostering creative industries, and integrating culture into urban development strategies. This initiative aligns with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, promoting creativity across seven fields: Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts, and Music. Minister for Tourism, P.A. Mohamed Riyas, unveiled the logo and website for "Kozhikode - City of Literature," highlighting the Malabar Literary Circuit, including Beypore and Vaikom Muhammad Basheer's home, as key attractions. Mayor M. Beena Philip announced that June 23 would be celebrated annually as 'City of Literature Day.' She also introduced the 'City of Literature' awards, which will honor contributions in various literary categories, including comprehensive contribution, women writers, young writers, children's literature, and translations. These awards will be presented during an annual cultural festival, further cementing Kozhikode's status as a literary hub. Kozhikode’s inclusion as a City of Literature opens new avenues for cultural and economic growth. Kerala’s Minister for Local Self-Government, M.B. Rajesh, emphasized the city's welcoming and freedom-loving spirit, likening it to London’s historical role as a cultural epicenter. Rajesh highlighted the contributions of Kozhikode’s writers, filmmakers, musicians, and media professionals in achieving this honor.

 Marathi to be taught in UP varsities

Now, Marathi will be taught in Uttar Pradesh’s universities. The decision was announced in the program organised on the occasion of Maharashtra Day which falls on May 1. Uttar Pradesh governor was present for the program and UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath announced the new idea. Speaking at the function in Lucknow, Adityanath said the UP government will develop facilities for teaching Marathi in universities of the state. According a release sent by Naik, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed by Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis for cultural exchange. This will be followed by signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis for cultural exchange. The move will help to spread the knowledge of Marathi literature in UP universities. Those who wish to follow the language and how its intricacies in UP, this project will surely help them. IT is a good move for cultural exchange which is much needed across the states in India.  Naik is a former Member of Parliament (MP) from north Mumbai constituency. He was appointed as UP governor after Modi government was elected to power at the Centre in 2014.

While Most Bookstores Shut Down, Know How a Bookstore Survived the Pandemic and Is Still Going Strong

For Neha and Vishal Pipraiya, books represent a very beautiful way of life. With Pagdandi, which means a rough path, they are trying to encourage people to slow down and take time off to have a cup of tea or coffee and browse. In August 2013, they opened the Pagdandi Bookstore Cafe as a lending library using books from their collection. Only 500 books were available for purchase, and they took up a few floor-to-ceiling bookcases. This month's opening of the new store has more than 5,000 titles available. It was during Covid that the company gradually progressed from a lending library to a full-fledged bookstore. The couple released an Excel sheet containing their titles for individuals to buy—and so increase revenue. Neha said that people began placing orders and they set up a system for deliveries. Soon with increasing orders and positive feedback they started a bookstore. After the pandemic, when the bookshop reopened, the staff discovered that many customers were tired of screen time and were coming to buy books the old-fashioned way, by taking their time browsing the shelves and choosing books. One of Pagdandi's strengths is curation, and the new store will include sections on Indian fiction, several translations, children's literature, art, film, history, and travel, among other topics. They are attempting to expand the science fiction section. Along with graphic novels, they are also attempting to acquire rare volumes. Despite facing many challenges, especially during the pandemic, the couple with their dedication took on the pandemic as well as e-commerce giants and emerged victorious. The new bookstore in Pune is evidence of this fact.

Weaving Dreams: Preserving Literary Heritage Through the Delicate Threads of Silk.

In the heartland of Assam, where dreams are often woven into the delicate threads of silk, there exists a weaver who has taken this age-old tradition to unprecedented heights. She skillfully weaves entire books into her creations! Meet Hemoprova Chutia, a remarkable artisan hailing from Moran, a town in the Dibrugarh district of Assam, who has received the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2023. While Assam is renowned for its skilled weavers, Hemoprova Chutia's approach to her craft is extraordinary. Beyond merely creating beautiful designs on fabric, she has taken weaving to an entirely new level by incorporating entire books into her creations. For instance, she intricately wove the entire Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Hindu scripture, into silk using traditional techniques. This awe-inspiring feat required meticulous attention and over two years of dedicated work. Not stopping there, Hemoprova demonstrated her mastery by weaving the Bhagavad Gita in English onto a 280-foot-long and 2-foot-wide piece of cloth. She also skillfully wove the Gunamala, a significant literary work by Assamese Saint Srimanta Shankardev, incorporating both the Assamese and translated Hindi and English versions. Her expertise extends to using beads to craft unique designs in cotton and silk Gamocha, a departure from the usual motifs seen in the region. Recognized by numerous awards and accolades, including the Assam Gaurav award and 'Handloom and Textile Award' by the state government, Hemoprova Chutia's weaving skills transcend the conventional, leaving an indelible mark on the world of art and culture.
