Beco’s Success Story: How a Genuine Concern for the Environment Led to the Formation of a Successful Startup

Aditya Ruia, Akshay Varma, and Anuj Ruia founded Beco in 2019 after being inspired by a beach cleaning program. Beco was founded with the goal of developing, fostering,and promoting environmentally friendly alternatives to single-use plastics and packaging. Since then, the company has been well-known. Currently, India is battling the threat of plastic waste. According to a recent Central Pollution Control Board assessment, a very small percentage of the country's daily plastic waste production—more than 26,000 tons—is recycled. The remaining waste is thrown away in landfills or the environment, where it could harm ecosystems and wildlife. Beco is an FMCG start-up that specializes in developing environmentally friendly and durable home products. It is a sustainable culinary, home, and personal care company that provides a wide range of products, such as dishwashing solutions, bamboo facial tissues, tissue rolls, and biodegradable garbage bags. The start-up asserts that each and every one of its products is biodegradable and combustible. Through its sustainable production and packaging methodology, Beco has reduced plastic waste by over 500 tons over the last three years. From manufacturing to packing to the supply chain, every product is produced entirely of bamboo, cornstarch, and 0% plastic. Founders Akshay, Aditya, and Anuj have been showered with praise for their sustainable venture and this year they were also included on Forbes India's list of the 30 Under 30.

Forbes Ranks Chanda Kochar As Most Powerful Woman In India

The CEO and MD of ICICI Bank Chanda Kochar was named the most powerful woman in India and ranked 32nd in World's 100 Most Powerful Women list by Forbes. Last May, Kochhar became the first Indian woman to receive the prestigious Woodrow Wilson Award for Global Citizenship. Five Indian women have featured in the list of the world's 100 most powerful women compiled by Forbes, which was topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The other four Indians to have appeared in the list are CEO of HCL Enterprise Roshni Nadar Malhotra, Chairperson of Biocon Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairperson of Hindustan Times Group Shobhana Bhartia and actress Priyanka Chopra. While Kochar took the 32nd position, HCL Corporation CEO Roshni Nadar Malhotra was ranked 57 followed by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Founder-Chair, of Biocon, at 71. Shobhana Bhartia, Chairperson and Editorial Director for HT Media made it at the 92nd place and Priyanka Chopra, "the most successful Bollywood actor to cross over to Hollywood" was placed at 97. Women of Indian origin in the list include PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi at the 11th position while Indian American Nikki Haley has been placed 43rd. Merkel who has topped the list this year has retained the top spot for the seventh consecutive year and 12 times in total. She is followed by UK Prime Minister Theresa May at the second position, who is leading her country through Brexit. At third place is Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, who, along with her husband Bill, has donated more than USD 40 billion in grants till date and supports organizations across over 100 countries. Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, at the 4th position, and GM CEO Mary Barra (5th) rounded out the top five.

Forbes 100 Greatest Living Business Minds List Features 3 Indians

Forbes magazine recently published a special list that featured 100 men and women who have contributed to their fields in a transcendent manner. The list has featured the US President, Donald Trump who is referred as "Salesman and Ringmaster Extraordinaire: Owner, Trump Organisation; 45th President Of The United States." Among these 100, there are three Indians who have made the cut. Ratan Tata, the Tata Group’s Chairman Emeritus; Lakshmi Mittal, the chairman and CEO of ArcelorMittal; and Vinod Khosla, the co-founder of Sun Microsystems are the corporate czars who are a part of this noteworthy list. The said list also includes Oprah Winfrey, Ted Turner, Michael Dell, and Mark Zuckerburg amongst others. Forbes published the list as a part of its centennial celebration and a tribute to these extraordinary minds. According to Forbes, "The list speaks to a century of entrepreneurial capitalism compiling the doers who have created, disrupted and innovated on a collectively historic scale." It is a matter of honour for entrepreneurs to be featured in Forbes, let alone in this special list. This list is the testament to the work of these 100 minds that they have made an impact on the world with their ideas and actions.

Kabeer Biswas is an Indian entrepreneur and the co-founder & CEO of Dunzo, a hyperlocal delivery startup based in Bengaluru, India.
