Puja Tomar Makes History: Secures India's First UFC Victory with a Spectacular Triumph!
In a historic moment for Indian MMA, Puja Tomar shattered barriers and shone on the world stage of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). With her resounding victory over Brazil's Rayanne Amanda dos Santos, Tomar not only claimed a victory for herself but paved the way for a new era of Indian fighters in the UFC. Hailing from Budhana village in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, Puja Tomar's journey to UFC glory is nothing short of extraordinary. Born and raised in a small village, Tomar defied odds and pursued her passion for martial arts from a young age. She lost her father at the age of 12. With the intention of protecting her family, she started learning karate and kickboxing. As a former national Wushu champion, she honed her skills in various leagues, including Matrix Fight Night and One Championship, before securing her UFC contract last year. Nicknamed "The Cyclone," Tomar's fighting prowess and strong determination have earned her recognition as one of India's top women fighters on the global stage. She trained at the Soma Fight Club in Bali, Indonesia as she embarked on her UFC journey. She was determined to make her mark in a sport traditionally dominated by men. She represented her country in the World Wushu Championship and secured the MFN strawweight Championship in 2013. Her preferred grappling move is the Heel hook, while she favors the Side kick as her striking technique of choice. In her historic UFC debut, Tomar faced off against Amanda dos Santos in a fast-paced, grueling three-round bout. Despite the intense competition, Tomar showcased her skills and determination, ultimately securing a well deserved victory with scores of 30-27, 27-30, 29-28. Tomar expressed her excitement and pride, stating that simply walking out with the Indian song and flag gave her goosebumps and made her feel proud, even before winning the match in the Octagon. Tomar's message to the world was clear: Indian fighters are not to be underestimated. "I want to show the world that Indian fighters are not losers. We are going all the way up! We are not going to stop! We’ll become a UFC champion soon!" she declared with unshaking confidence. Post win, Puja dedicated the win to her mother and passionately acknowledged that her mother had always stood by her side. Throughout her journey, she followed her mother's three-word mantra: "Puja, Just fight." Beyond her victory in the Octagon, Tomar's journey serves as a symbol of hope and inspiration for aspiring fighters across India. Her resilience, courage, and determination exemplify the true spirit of a trailblazer inspiring future generations to follow in her footsteps.
