R.M. Narayanan, a 63-year-old retired LIC employee, has been making a significant impact in the world of sports since 1989. With an unwavering dedication to nurturing aspiring athletes, Narayanan has trained over 1,000 individuals in shot put, javelin-throw, discus throw, and more. Despite declining promotion offers and choosing to remain in his hometown, Narayanan's passion for coaching has never waned. Supported by his earnings and pension, he selflessly offers his expertise for free. His commitment to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is evident as he continues to run 5 kilometers every day, defying age stereotypes. Narayanan's coaching prowess has not gone unnoticed. In 2021, he was honored as the best coach of Tamil Nadu by the then Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. His training has resulted in the success of four international athletes and eight gold medal-winning national-level athletes, proving that dedication and passion can bring about remarkable achievements. Having been drawn to sports since his school days, Narayanan pursued his love for athletics by joining a government coaching center in 1976. His own participation in various state and national events, including javelin throw, discus throw, and 400m hurdle, fueled his desire to share his knowledge with others. Narayanan's coaching philosophy revolves around accepting individuals who possess a genuine interest in the sport and are committed to physical fitness. For the past 35 years, he has devoted six hours every day to coaching, including three years of specialized training for para-athletes. Not only does Narayanan provide free coaching, but he also goes the extra mile to fulfill the financial needs of his students. By securing sponsorships and addressing their requirements, he ensures that aspiring athletes can focus on their training without any hindrances.
