India’s First 10th Dan Karate Master: The Inspiring Rise of Hanshi Shaswat Kumar
In the quiet lanes of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, a young boy discovered a passion that would one day carry his name across the global martial arts community. Hanshi Shaswat Kumar’s fascination with martial arts began at a very early age. Like many young enthusiasts inspired by discipline and strength, he stepped into the world of karate by training in Shito Ryu style. His early years were shaped not only by rigorous practice but also by constant change. Because of his father’s government job, his family moved from Odisha to Andhra Pradesh. Instead of disrupting his journey, the move became an opportunity. Shaswat continued his karate training with even greater dedication, focusing particularly on kumite, the full-contact fighting format of karate. As a young athlete, he quickly proved his potential. Championship after championship, medal after medal, Shaswat Kumar began building a reputation as one of the most promising karate fighters in India.Rising Through National and International Karate ArenasAs his career progressed, Shaswat Kumar’s name began appearing frequently on winners’ lists across national tournaments. His fighting style, marked by precision, speed, and resilience, made him a formidable competitor. When Andhra Pradesh was later divided and Telangana was formed, he represented Telangana and India in several karate competitions across different organizations. During this period, he achieved one of the most remarkable milestones of his early career by becoming a five-time National Champion. Beyond India, Shaswat Kumar also participated in international championships, where he competed against some of the finest karate practitioners in the world. Each competition sharpened his skills and expanded his understanding of martial arts philosophy. For him, karate was not merely a sport but a lifelong discipline built on respect, control, and continuous learning.Choosing Independence and Building a VisionIn 2014, a turning point arrived in Shaswat Kumar’s journey. Due to differences with his master and organization, he made the difficult decision to leave and begin an independent path. Such decisions are never easy for martial artists, especially when they involve stepping away from established systems. But Shaswat saw it as an opportunity to shape his own vision of karate. The following year, in 2015, he founded Shotokan Karate Do International. Through this organization, he continued practicing Shotokan karate while also expanding his expertise by learning Kyokushin karate, known for its intense full-contact fighting style. His dedication quickly earned recognition, and in the same year he was appointed as the Country Representative for the Kyokushin Karate International Association USA in India. Managing two different karate systems simultaneously required discipline and leadership, but Shaswat Kumar successfully guided both organizations.A Historic Honor from JapanShaswat Kumar’s achievements eventually earned global recognition. On February 28, 2026, in Tokyo, he received one of the highest honors in martial arts history. Soke Yoshimoto Tanaka, President of the All Japan Martial Arts Organization, along with Vice President Shihan Kauro Kamiya, awarded him the prestigious 10th Dan Black Belt. This recognition made him the first Indian karate master to receive the rank from the Japanese martial arts organization. Along with this honor, he was also conferred the titles of Soke, Hanshi, Grandmaster, and Supreme Grandmaster, making him the first Indian martial artist to hold all these distinguished titles.
