Kerala Enters Global Food Map with Kochi’s First Modern Food Street

On September 27, 2025, Kochi unveiled a significant milestone in its gastronomic journey, Kerala's first modern Food Street. Located in the vibrant Kasturba Nagar, near Kadavanthra, this initiative marks a transformative step towards redefining street food culture in the state. The project is part of the Central Government's 'Modernisation of 100 Food Streets' scheme, aiming to elevate the standards of street food across India. In Kerala, this vision is brought to life through a collaborative effort involving the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), Kochi Corporation, the National Health Mission, and the State Food Safety Department. The Food Street is designed to offer a hygienic, safe, and diverse culinary experience, featuring a blend of traditional Kerala delicacies and innovative fusion dishes.Infrastructure and Community ImpactSpanning an area of approximately 5,000 square feet, the Food Street comprises kiosks of varying sizes, catering to a wide array of culinary preferences. The facility includes essential amenities such as restrooms, waste management systems, parking spaces, and security measures. The project is developed with a budget of ₹1.35 crore, funded by the Union Government, and aims to generate employment opportunities, support local vendors, and promote community dining experiences. Initially planned for Fort Kochi, the location was shifted to Kasturba Nagar to better serve the city's residents and visitors. The inauguration ceremony was graced by Health Minister Veena George, GCDA Chairman K Chandran Pillai, and Kochi Mayor M Anilkumar, highlighting the collaborative efforts behind this venture.A Gateway to Global Culinary RecognitionThe establishment of Kerala's first Food Street in Kochi is more than just a local development; it is a strategic move towards positioning the state as a prominent destination on the global food map.
