Adani Enterprises Launches Landmark Project Connecting Sonprayag to Kedarnath
Adani Enterprises Ltd. (AEL), the flagship company of the Gautam Adani-led group, is set to revolutionize the pilgrimage to the Kedarnath temple by constructing a 12.9-kilometre ropeway from Sonprayag to Kedarnath. Approved by the Union Cabinet earlier this year, the project is expected to cost ₹4,081 crore and reduce the arduous 8–9-hour uphill trek to just 36 minutes. This initiative will not only ease the journey for millions of devotees but also enhance safety, comfort, and accessibility, particularly for elderly pilgrims and those with health limitations.Project Overview: A Milestone in InfrastructureThe Sonprayag–Kedarnath ropeway is part of the National Ropeways Development Programme, under the Parvatmala Pariyojana, and will be executed by AEL’s Roads, Metro, Rail, and Water (RMRW) division. Once operational, the ropeway will be able to carry 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, with a total daily capacity of 18,000 pilgrims. Sonprayag, located at the final road-accessible point for Kedarnath pilgrims, currently serves as a launch point for the traditional 16-kilometre uphill trek or other modes such as ponies, palanquins, and helicopters. The ropeway will bridge this gap, offering a faster, safer, and more reliable route to the sacred shrine located at an elevation of 3,583 meters in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district.Advanced Technology for a Seamless ExperienceThe ropeway will employ Tri-cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology, a state-of-the-art system that ensures stability, efficiency, and high passenger capacity even in challenging mountain terrain. This advanced technology allows the ropeway to function safely under varying weather conditions, a critical consideration in the Himalayan region, where fog, wind, and snow can disrupt travel.Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, highlighted the project’s dual purpose, stating, “The Kedarnath ropeway is more than an engineering project it is a bridge between devotion and modern infrastructure. By making this sacred journey safer, faster, and more accessible, we honor the faith of millions while creating new opportunities for Uttarakhand’s people.”Easing the Pilgrims’ StruggleFor countless devotees, the journey to Kedarnath has traditionally been a test of endurance, involving a long uphill trek in harsh weather conditions. The ropeway promises a profound human impact by making the pilgrimage safer and more inclusive. Elderly pilgrims, families with children, and differently-abled devotees will now have a viable alternative to the physically demanding trek, enabling them to experience the spiritual journey without risking health or safety. Moreover, the project is expected to boost employment opportunities in the region. From construction jobs to operations, maintenance, and tourism-related services, the ropeway will provide livelihoods for local communities, integrating infrastructure development with social and economic upliftment.Tourism Boost and Regional DevelopmentThe Kedarnath temple attracts nearly 20 lakh pilgrims annually, many of whom struggle with transportation challenges due to the difficult terrain. By reducing travel time from hours to minutes, the ropeway is set to increase tourism and promote Uttarakhand as a more accessible pilgrimage and adventure destination. The improved connectivity will likely spur ancillary economic activities, including local hospitality, handicrafts, and guided services, creating sustainable regional development.Project Timeline and OperationThe ropeway is expected to be completed in approximately six years, after which AEL will operate it for 29 years under a public-private partnership (PPP) model in collaboration with the National Highways & Logistics Management Ltd. (NHLML). The revenue-sharing arrangement ensures that both the government and the private entity benefit from the project, promoting accountability, high operational standards, and long-term maintenance of the ropeway.A Bridge Between Faith and ModernityThe Sonprayag–Kedarnath ropeway represents a landmark moment in India’s infrastructure and tourism sectors. It combines engineering excellence with a deep understanding of pilgrims’ needs, creating a safe, fast, and inclusive route to one of India’s most revered temples. Beyond reducing travel time, the project underscores the potential for modern infrastructure to enhance spiritual experiences, empower local communities, and boost regional economic growth. It is a proof to how visionary infrastructure projects can bridge tradition and modernity, devotion and development, while uplifting the lives of countless people.
