Sawan Barwal Ends 44-Year Wait, Wins Marathon Silver at Asian Games

India’s long wait for an Asian Games marathon medal is finally over. Sawan Barwal raced into history on Saturday, winning the men’s marathon silver medal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with a personal best of 2:11:37.The 28-year-old Indian Army Havildar from Himachal Pradesh finished behind Japan’s Ichitaka Yamashita, who won gold in 2:10:49. China’s Peiyou Feng claimed bronze in 2:12:13.Barwal’s silver ended a remarkable 44-year medal drought for India in the event.A Historic Chapter for IndiaIndia’s previous Asian Games marathon medal came at the 1982 Delhi Games, when Hosur Kukkappa Seetharan won bronze. The country’s only other marathon medals also came at the Delhi editions. In 1951, Chota Singh won gold while Surat Singh Matur secured bronze.Barwal has now become only the fourth Indian to win an Asian Games marathon medal—and the first to achieve the feat outside India.From Track Runner to Marathon StarBarwal’s journey to the podium has been one of steady progression. Before making his mark in the marathon, he competed in events ranging  from the 1,500m and 5,000m to the 10,000m and 25km road race. He joined the Indian Army in 2019 and later shifted his focus towards marathon running, following the advice of his mentor Mohammed Yunus Khan and coach Scott Simmon.His marathon breakthrough came earlier this year at the NN Marathon Rotterdam. Making his competitive marathon debut on April 12, Barwal clocked 2:11:58, breaking Shivnath Singh’s long-standing Indian men’s marathon national record of 2:12:00, set in 1978.That performance earned him his Asian Games qualification.The Aichi-Nagoya marathon began at 4 a.m. IST, with Barwal among 19 competitors. According to reports, he stayed with the leading group through the early stages and was already sitting in second place at the halfway mark. At 35 kilometres, he remained second with a reported timing of 1:49:29. With around seven kilometres remaining, Yamashita began to pull away.Even as the Japanese runner extended his advantage, the Indian maintained his pace and protected his silver-medal spot all the way to the finish.A personal best. A silver medal. And after 44 years, India finally has another Asian Games marathon medallist.
