Snatching Glory: Bindyarani Devi wins bronze in the women's 55kg division.

Headlines Speak: Bindyarani Devi, an Indian weightlifter, took home a bronze medal on Tuesday at the IWF World Cup 2024 in Phuket, Thailand. Bindyarani Devi made India proud by winning the bronze with a total lift of 196 kg (83 kg snatch + 113 kg clean and jerk) while competing in the non-Olympic women's 55 kg class. Her 203 kg attempt, which won her a silver medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, fell short of her goal. With a lift of 234 kg (103 kg snatch + 131 kg clean and jerk), Kang Hyon Gyong of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea took home the gold medal in Phuket. Mihaela Cambei of Romania won silver, hitting a personal best of 201 kg (91 kg plus 110 kg). The 25-year-old Bindyarani had a poor attempt in the 83 kg snatch early in the evening, but she was successful on her second try. Her second effort to lift 86 kg was unsuccessful. The Indian weightlifter scored 110 kg and 113 kg in her first two attempts at the clean and jerk. Nevertheless, Bindyarani's last effort with a clean and jerk weight of 119 kg was not successful. Bindyarani Devi thus took home a silver in the clean-and-jerk division. The IWF World Cup, World Championships, and Continental Championships feature medals given out in each category for the clean and jerk, total lifts, and snatch events. How an Enterprising Farmer Came Up With Innovative Solutions That Won Him the President’s Award

Necessity is the mother of invention, and that's what prompted Kadavendi Mahipal Chary, a 42-year-old farmer to come up with innovative solutions like mini-cultivator, mini-tractor, power weeders, and hydraulic lifts for farmers who couldn’t afford expensive equipment available in the market and so ended up doing back-breaking work on the field. Chary, who couldn’t complete his 10th board exams, worked as a bike mechanic. Later he returned to his village to work on his father’s 2-acre land. In those days he couldn’t afford laborers or cows to plough the land. With the knowledge he gained from repairing tractors he started designing the mini-cultivator for ploughing. Chary admits that his initial effort, which involved an auto-rickshaw motor, was unsuccessful. The mini-cultivator functioned after he modified a China-made engine that he had purchased in Hyderabad. After that, he started generating more, he claims. Buoyed by the positive response, Chary is currently producing cultivators by putting together engines from Kolhapur and materials and gears from Hyderabad. His company, Varun Engineering Works, employs 12 people, and they have so far sold about 4,000 cultivators. Chary states that with the machine, a farmer can typically till two to three acres of land in three hours using one liter of diesel. The equipment only costs Rs 50,000, whereas using cows would cost at least Rs 1 lakh and require upkeep. Apart from the cultivator, Chary has also developed a power weeder (20 units have been sold), a mini-truck attached to a trolley that can tow up to one ton, and a tractor hydraulic lift that can lift 500 kg. For his innovations, Chary received the President's Award in 2015 and the National Entrepreneurship Award in 2018

Building Futures: Gujarat's New Initiative to Support Construction Workers with Affordable Housing

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has launched the 'Shramik Basera' initiative, aimed at providing temporary housing for around 15,000 construction workers at just Rs5 per day. The program begins with the construction of 17 such facilities across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara, and Rajkot. Patel inaugurated one of these shelters in Ahmedabad's Jagatpur area and used technology to commence the development of the remaining facilities from a distance. While speaking at the event, he said this plan will help around 15,000 construction workers once everything's set up. Over the next three years, they'll build more of these living centers all over Gujarat. This will be good for about 3 lakh construction workers and will cost Rs 1,500 crore, he added. A Way To Make Things Positive ~ The India Employment Report 2024, released by the Institute for Human Development and the International Labour Organisation on Tuesday, highlights improvements in the job market despite challenging economic conditions and the impact of COVID-19. After a decline from 2000 to 2019, recent years have seen positive changes in job market indicators, including the number of job seekers, employment rates, and those unable to find work. India Shines As Two Young Powerlifters Win 8 Gold Medals in New Zealand!

At the recently concluded Commonwealth Powerlifting and Bench Press Championship held in New Zealand, two young powerlifters made India proud as they won four gold medals each. B Anil Kumar, a first-year MBA student, and Durga Prasad, a final-year BA student, won gold in the bench press, squat, deadlift, and overall championship in the 93 kg and 83 kg categories, respectively. They were euphoric about having represented India at an international event and emerging victorious. Anil, who comes from a farming family, never thought he would want to compete in powerlifting until his college lecturer encouraged him. Anil summarized his path by saying that the past four years had been incredibly challenging in terms of training and injury recovery. He didn't realize how impressive winning the medals in New Zealand was until he got home and was greeted with overwhelming support and encouragement, Anil added. Durga Prasad, on the other hand, always yearned to power lift after watching his uncle do it. At the age of 16, he began his training. He expressed his joy by revealing that compared to the joy of representing India among several foreign nations, the weight of the bars seemed insignificant. Though he had always wanted to be successful in the sport, he never imagined it to be that popular. “We fail frequently on this road, but it shouldn't deter us or have a detrimental effect on our willpower”, Prasad added. Anil and Prasad both intend to compete in the upcoming World Junior Powerlifting Championships. Dr. Lankapalli Bullayya College is assisting the two powerlifters by offering them free education up till they complete their post-graduation in celebration of their accomplishments.

World’s Largest Pump House in Telangana Successfully Commences Operations

It is a matter of pride for our country that Lakshmipur pump house, claimed to be the world's largest pump house successfully started operations on Monday. It is a key component of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP). Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao will formally inaugurate this gigantic pump house on Wednesday. The pumping station will facilitate the live storage of water in reservoirs throughout the year in the Godavari river belt. Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) KLIP is a multi-purpose irrigation project on the Godavari river in Kaleshwaram. It is the world's largest multi-stage lift irrigation project. The Laximpur Underground Pumping Station (LUPS) is a major component of the irrigation project. It was unveiled by Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL). The Laxmipur Pump House The colossal and extraordinary underground pump house is an ultra-mega project in the world, having 7 motors, each having a capacity of 139 megawatts. It is situated 470 feet below the ground with twin tunnels and the largest surge pools in the world. The gigantic motors which can lift three TMC (Thousand Million Cubic) water per day were developed indigenously with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology. On Sunday, the fifth machine in LUPS in Karimnagar district was switched on and the gush of water from the underground impressed the onlookers. The KLIP was formally inaugurated in June. When fully operational, the Rs 80,000 crore project will lift two thousand million cubics (TMC) feet of water per day to a height of half-a-kilometre. The project will facilitate the irrigation of 45 lakh acres for two crops in a year. It will the drinking water requirement of 70 per cent of the state and also cater to the needs of the industry. Meet Bhavna Tokekar who bagged four gold medals at the Open Asian Powerlifting Championship which was held in Russia. Bhavna achieved this commendable feat at the age of 47 and she was introduced to weight-lifting when she was 41. Bhavna is a mother of two teenagers and today she stands as an inspiration for all the mothers out there. Wife of an IAF fighter pilot, Bhavna learned about improving strength through weight training when the IAF bodybuilding team told her about the same. And that’s when she started her weight training journey. In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Bhavna spoke about the myths related to weight training as she said: “There are many myths surrounding bodybuilding, weight lifting and other strength sports, especially related to women like it is meant only for young people and that it makes the body bulky. I started training initially when I was 41, but I wanted to be sure of it since I didn’t want to injure myself or do the wrong technique since weight lifting is not popular here.” Bhavna’s laudable achievement tells us that each one of us has the ability to achieve our dreams. World’s First Lift Without Cables

Can you imagine a lift without ropes and pulleys? One of the world’s largest elevator companies is stepping up trials of the first system to operate without cables at a testing site in southwestern Germany. ThyssenKrupp AG's futuristic lift defies the conventional design of lifts that are attached to ropes and pulleys. The German engineering company is all set to be a step ahead of its rivals with the first commercial deployment of the maglev elevator called Multi planned for 2020 in a building in Berlin. Currently, it is ranked fourth in the world by sales after Otis, Kone Oyj and Schindler Holdings AG. While Kone is focusing on making cables lighter for ultra-tall buildings like Saudi Arabia's Jeddah Tower and Otis, owned by United Technologies Corp., has developed high-speed lifts, ThyssenKrupp's Multi elevator will be in a category of its own, technologically. According to ThyssenKrupp, the Multi will make ferrying people around buildings more efficient, unlike traditionally-designed systems. For instance, more than one of the elevator cabins can use the same shaft, zipping up and down and even moving horizontally to get out of the way of another cabin in its path. This flexibility could allow greater architectural leeway and ultimately change city skylines. The new elevators could run on the outside of buildings, or move sideways between parking lots and concierge desks.
