Chugging Back in Time: Exploring History on Gujarat's Newest Heritage Train

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a grand celebration on Tuesday, October 30, inaugurated Gujarat's newest gem - a heritage train that weaves through the rich tapestry of history, connecting the enchanting Ekta Nagar to the vibrant heart of Ahmedabad. This historic railway route is set to provide tourists with a convenient means to visit the iconic Statue of Unity, a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on the occasion of his birthday. The Steam Heritage Special Train is a remarkable endeavor, comprising three coaches designed to evoke the charm of yesteryear's locomotives. What's truly captivating about this train is its electric locomotive, which has been skillfully crafted to resemble a traditional steam engine. It features foggers that replicate exhaust emissions, while a sophisticated sound system recreates the characteristic chugging and whistling of a steam locomotive, offering passengers an authentic and nostalgic experience. Starting from November 5, the heritage train is set to run as a weekly service, exclusively on Sundays. The departure from Ahmedabad is scheduled for 6:10 a.m., with the train arriving at Ekta Nagar, the railway station situated in Kevadia, at 9:50 a.m. Kevadia is renowned for being the home of the Statue of Unity, which stands proudly within the Sardar Sarovar dam's reservoir. The return journey is equally convenient, with the train departing from Ekta Nagar at 8:23 p.m. and reaching Ahmedabad at 12:05 a.m. Covering a distance of 182 kilometers between Ekta Nagar and Ahmedabad, this journey is set to be a non-stop adventure. The one-way fare for this delightful route is a reasonable Rs 885, making it an accessible and attractive option for travelers. Each of the three coaches on the heritage train can accommodate up to 48 passengers, ensuring a comfortable and spacious journey. Statue of Unity Stands Tall As It Gets Global Recognition by Featuring in Time Magazine’s List of Greatest Places in the World

Now, we have another reason to rejoice as Statue of Unity is included in Time magazine’s list of greatest places in the world 2019. Statue of Unity The Statue of Unity is built in honour of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the iron man of India and first Deputy Prime Minister of India. The towering 182 m tall statue was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31 October 2018 along with the Wall of Unity which is a monument defining India’s unity built near the towering structure. Ever since it has been open to the public, people from all over the world have thronged this place and it has become a major attraction. Location The gigantic Statue of Unity is built on a river island named Sadhu Bet that faces the Sardar Sarovar dam in Narmada district in Gujarat. It is 100 km southeast of the city of Vadodara and 150 km from Surat. It is twice the height of the Statue of Liberty in the United States and has left behind China’s Spring Temple Buddha at 153 meters. Gujarat Police Stations To Have a 'Bal Corner'

Ashish Bhatia, DGP, CID, crime and railways sent a letter to all the police commissioners and range IGPs, asking them to allot a separate physical space for 'Bal Corner'. As the name suggests, Bal Corner will be a 'child-friendly' space inside a police station for the minor complainants and those accused. ‎The idea behind was to provide a more friendly and secure environment to the minors. The Bal Corners are designed keeping children in mind. They will not only be clean but will also have clean drinking water, food, clothes and material for the entertainment of children. ‎The letter sent by the DGP stresses on the issue that the juvenile is treated as per their age. The police stations are directed to appoint a police officer as a child welfare officer and should maintain a separate register for lodging complaints of the minor victims said another police official.

Bird census in Gujarat

Gujarat birds will now make a presence on a map of the state. The Gujarat forest Department has decided to mark the presence of Gujarat’s wings visitors and conduct its census. The department has begun its biggest bird census and seabirds and other birds frequenting 1,650 km will be counted. This is for the first time that Gujarat forest department is conducting the bird survey. It will take place across 16 districts including coastal districts with major wetlands. The officials informed that so far the department had confined its bird count to coastal wetlands while ignoring the huge number of winged visitors that reside in and around the seashore. As per the report in the Times of India a forest official pointed out that the map showing bird presence in the state, will allow the department to properly plan for conservation of the birds, as locations and associated bird counts would be known with accuracy. Accordingly, better deployment of security and other measures could be taken. Each site frequented by birds is recorded with the help of GPS devices which helped the officials to prepare the map. Around 160 birds species are found in wetlands and 130 have been found in Gujarat with majority located in Kutch. Gujarat currently has the second-highest count of winged visitors after Odisha, which has over two million birds visiting every year. Officials, however, said the state might be in the second position only because seabirds and birds in coastal areas of the state had never been included in census.

Gujarat gets it’s first Woman Police Chief

Gujarat got its first women Police Chief when IPS officer Geetha Johri was given the charge on Tuesday. Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja said that Johri was made the police chief as she was holding the senior-most IPS post in the state. Johri took the additional charge after her predecessor, P P Pandey, had to give up his post as per the orders of Supreme Court. Johri, who is currently the Managing Director of the Gujarat Police Housing Corporation in Gandhinagar is a 1982 batch IPS officer. Last April, she got promoted from Additional DGP to the Director General of Police. In September 1992, Johri added a feather in her cap by conducting a raid into mafia don Abdul Latif’s hideout in Ahmedabad. While serving as the supervisory officer in 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh case, Johri shot to fame as her efforts revealed that apart from Sohrabuddin, his wife Kauserbi was also killed to cover up the encounter. This revelation led to the arrests of Gujarat-cadre IPS officers D G Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandian, and Dinesh M N of the Rajasthan cadre.

If you ever visit the Jambur village in Gujarat, you will be in for a surprise. People in this village have typical African features and they seem to be of African descent, yet they converse in fluent Gujarati! Jambur village, which is situated around 20 km from Gir, is therefore called the African village in Gujarat as for centuries, the Siddi communities of African origin have dwelled here. They are thought to have initially arrived in India during the seventh century, and more might have arrived during the Arab conquest. Gujarat's Tribal Women Pave the Way to Multi-Crore Agriculture Triumph!

A group of semi-literate tribal women from Gujarat's Dang district has created a multi-crore enterprise, the Farmers Producer Organisation (FPO). The FPO has provided employment to scores of women, transforming their lives and defying societal expectations. Due to the limited market, women farmers sold their harvest individually, resulting in a stagnant financial condition. To overcome this, the voluntary organization, Aga Khan Village Support Programme (India) (AKRSPI), assembled a collective of tribal women. The aim was to organize their agricultural operations, enabling them to secure better prices for their produce, increasing their decision-making influence, and enhancing their economic status. Through the combined efforts of these determined women, a total of 1,170 shareholders have been officially registered as of January 2023. The organization's female workforce has achieved a modest turnover of about Rs 1.85 crore this year (2022-23), mainly through the sale of agricultural seeds, farming equipment, organic medicines, fish seeds, poultry feed, and various other products. Empowered with knowledge of their rights, these remarkable women have taken charge of their communities, addressing essential issues such as access to clean water, road infrastructure, and sanitation facilities through the platform of panchayats. The success of the FPO has spread to the district level, and farmers from Maharashtra's border villages also come to get these seeds at low costs. The initiative has helped these women to conveniently obtain seeds at a reasonable price by simply making a phone call and negotiating from the comfort of their homes. The FPO has not only improved the economic status of the women but a has also empowered them to address community issues and create positive change.

This Man’s Dedication and Interest in Pottery Earned Him the Title of a Scientist!

Mansukhbhai Raghavjibhai Prajapati from Gujarat is a down to earth man with an immense interest in pottery which has also been the family’s occupation for many years. As he was growing up, he developed an interest in making clay pots and wanted to lend a hand in the family business. However, his father who knew the hardships of this profession insisted that Prajapati should learn carpentry. Prajapati, who meddled with carpentry for a while found his true calling in pottery and returned to help his family business, much to the disappointment of his father who wanted him to become a carpenter. New Technology Prajapati wanted to modernize the whole process of making clay pots and pans. With his determination, he was able to procure Rs 30,000 and he dedicated his time and energy in developing a machine that could make tawa (pans). After unsuccessful attempts with nearly one and a half lakh tawas, he finally got the breakthrough technology. While a whole family of potters was making just about 80-100 tawas in a day Prajapati could make around 4000 tawas. This motivated him to try more such things from clay and he went on to make earthen dinner sets, cookers, filters and even spoons and glasses. In fact, he successfully made nearly all kitchen apparatus and appliances with clay. Earthen Refrigerator It is the dream of every household to have a fridge. However, economically weaker sections are unable to pay even their electricity bills. Prajapati used his pottery skills to make a clay refrigerator that worked without electricity and was easy on the pocket as well. All one has to do is fill a compartment of the clay fridge with water. Fruits and vegetables remain fresh in it for seven days. A family even replaced their electric fridge with the clay one and are reaping the benefits. Besides, the clay fridge is also good for the environment. Mansukhbhi Prajapati passionately and successfully harnessed the vast potential of soil and transformed himself from a poor potter to a successful entrepreneur who is the founder of Mitticool.
