A First for India: Delhi Airport Introduces Cutting-Edge Self-Service Bag Drop
Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi has become the first in India to introduce a cutting-edge self-service bag drop system as of June 17. This was announced by the Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL). This new system allows travelers to independently check in their bags, pick up tags, and print boarding passes, streamlining the entire process and saving valuable time. By embedding essential information into the tags, the need for traditional boarding passes and biometric validation is eliminated. This initiative makes Delhi's airport only the second in the world to offer such a service, following Toronto Airport in Canada. Installation of Self-Service Bag Drop(SSBD) ~ Delhi’s IGI Airport has installed around 50 Self-Service Bag Drop (SSBD) units across Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 for passengers, and they are available with three airlines – Air India, IndiGo, and Air India Express. How does this mechanism function ~ (Source: Google Images) With the help of this new system, travelers may now pick up and affix their luggage tags at CUSSH kiosks as they arrive. With a single click, the system on the SBD machine launches the corresponding airline's application after the travelers load their bags onto the conveyor belt. Furthermore, the DIAL added that when travelers accept the dangerous items self-declaration form with a single click, the SBD system internally verifies that they meet all applicable requirements and business standards as specified by the airlines. Different from old mechanism ~ Previously, travelers could print boarding passes, pick up luggage tags, and avoid check-in desks by using common-use self-service (CUSS) kiosks. Under this system, passengers had to scan their boarding passes or use biometric cameras before placing their bags on the conveyor belt at the drop units. To streamline the process, DIAL has introduced a rapid drop solution that reduces processing time from approximately a minute to just 30 seconds. This improvement is achieved by eliminating the need for boarding passes or biometric authentication, as these details are now embedded in the baggage tag.
