Pune’s Tulshibaug Gets a Summer Makeover: Green, Cool, and Ready for Shopping!
This summer, Pune isn’t just sweating, it’s sizzling. With the mercury already touching 40°C in mid-April, this year’s heatwave has officially entered the “legendary” zone. Meteorologists are calling it the hottest summer in 70 years, and Punekars? Well that’s the twist: even when the city is turning into a giant oven, there’s one thing that Punekars simply refuse to stop - shopping. No matter how hot it gets, that pull to bargain for jhumkas, sip on ice candies, or grab pooja essentials remains unshaken. So, what did the city do? It threw some shade, literally. A kilometer-long green net has been draped over the market stretch, turning Tulshibaug into a shaded paradise where shoppers and sellers can breathe easier and sweat less. 40°C? No Problem! Tulshibaug’s Got a Green CanopyTulshibaug isn’t just another shopping street, it’s Pune’s soul in saree form. A living, breathing maze of deals and stories, this iconic market has been serving Punekars for over a century. Nestled in the heart of the old city, right near cultural gems like Shaniwar Wada and Dagdusheth Ganpati, Tulshibaug is where you go for bangles and bindis, but come back with a lot of memories! And now, it’s also the first shopping street in India to get a full-fledged green net makeover to beat the brutal heat. Spearheaded by the Pune Municipal Corporation, the BJP Pune City Hawkers' Front, and the Nagar Path Vender Committee under the guidance of Sagar Sunil Dahibhate, this initiative has become a talking point across town. It’s sustainable, simple, and totally smart! Mist Machines, Water Sprays: Beating Heat The Pune Style The Pune Municipal Corporation is on a mission to outsmart the heat with water sprinklers spraying the streets, mist machines, and tankers for overheated pavements. Vendors now get a less scorching setup, and tired feet find relief with shady sitting spots and free drinking water kiosks, all popping up across market corners. The whole initiative is kicked off by local MLA Hemant Rasane, completed with book giveaways on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for women shoppers, a little wisdom to go with your window shopping. Rasane dreams of turning Pune’s Kasba Peth into the “Hub of shade and serenity”. From blazing sun to shady strolls, this summer, Tulshibaug is proof that tradition can adapt and glow up, without losing its soul.
