PM Modi Flags Off the Pravasi Bharatiya Express Connecting the Indian Diaspora to Their Roots
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today virtually launched the Pravasi Bharatiya Express marking a significant effort to enhance the connection between India and its global diaspora. The special tourist train, exclusively designed for the Indian diaspora, embarked on its three-week journey from Delhi’s Nizamuddin railway station. This initiative, organized under the Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojana (PTDY) and in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), promises to offer participants a chance to explore India’s rich cultural, spiritual, and historical heritage.The launch took place during the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention in Bhubaneswar. The date, January 9, holds historical significance, as it commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa in 1915—a significant event in the Indian independence struggle.A Special Train for the Indian DiasporaThe Pravasi Bharatiya Express is not just a train, but a bridge that connects Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to their roots. With a state-of-the-art design, the train promises a comfortable and culturally enriching journey. The tour will take passengers to several key religious and tourist destinations across India, providing them an opportunity to reconnect with their heritage and explore the spiritual heart of the nation.The train will accommodate a maximum of 156 passengers, offering them the chance to experience India’s iconic landmarks while enjoying the modern comforts of 4-star or equivalent accommodations. Government Support and Subsidized TourIn a gesture that reflects the government’s commitment to fostering global connectivity, all expenses for the tour, including lodging and meals, will be covered by the Indian government. Additionally, 90% of the return airfare from participants’ countries of origin to India will be funded, with travelers only required to contribute the remaining 10%.This initiative is designed to give PIOs, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, an opportunity to reconnect with their homeland without financial strain. It aims to make cultural tourism accessible to all, regardless of income.The Journey Ahead: Exploring India’s HeritageOver the course of three weeks, the Pravasi Bharatiya Express will take its passengers on a journey through some of the most significant cultural and religious sites in India. The train’s route includes destinations like Ayodhya, Patna, Gaya, Varanasi, Mahabalipuram, Rameswaram, Madurai, Kochi, Goa, Ekta Nagar (Kevadia), Ajmer, Pushkar, and Agra.These cities are not only known for their rich history and culture but also play an integral role in India’s spiritual life.
