What Happens to Your Old Clothes? Delhi Metro Has a New Answer

What if your next Metro ride could also help keep clothes out of landfills?Delhi has taken a step in that direction with the launch of ‘Arpan Kendra’, dedicated collection centres where commuters can donate old, wearable clothes for reuse, recycling and upcycling.Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the first centre at Punjabi Bagh West Metro station, launching the initiative in collaboration with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the Delhi Metro Ladies Welfare Organisation. The programme aims to tackle textile waste while making sustainable living easier for thousands of Delhi residents.Five Stations Already OpenThe initiative is being rolled out across 10 major Delhi Metro stations. In the first phase, Arpan Kendras are already operational at Punjabi Bagh West, Shalimar Bagh, Mayur Vihar Phase-1, Shahdara and Rohini West.Textile collection kiosks have been installed at these stations, allowing commuters to drop off clothes they no longer need but that can still be worn or repurposed. A QR code-based digital donation system has also been introduced. Donors can use the digital process to contribute clothes and receive an electronic receipt, making the system more convenient and transparent.Turning Old Clothes Into New OpportunitiesThe initiative is not only about waste reduction. It also seeks to create livelihoods.Women’s self-help groups will play a central role in managing the donated garments, from collection and segregation to recycling and upcycling. This could transform discarded clothing into useful products while creating income-generating opportunities for women.Gupta said responsible reuse of textiles can help conserve water, energy and other natural resources, while ensuring that usable garments reach people who need them.The Chief Minister urged Delhi residents to donate clothes that may no longer have a place in their wardrobes but are still wearable. The message is simple: before an old shirt, dress or pair of trousers ends up as waste, give it another chance.With busy Metro stations doubling as donation points, Arpan Kendra brings sustainable action closer to everyday life.
