Driving Against the Odds: Meet 71 Year-Old With Eleven Licences Including That of JCB and Crane!
Radhamani Amma, affectionately known as Mani Amma in Kerala, is not your ordinary septuagenarian. She has broken barriers and defied stereotypes. At 71 years old, she is a pioneer in the world of driving, holding an impressive eleven different licenses, including those for heavy-duty machines like JCBs and cranes. Embracing a Bold Path Radhamani's journey into the driving world began as a collaborative effort with her husband who owned and managed a driving school. He saw her potential and encouraged her to drive heavy vehicles. It was his confidence in her that gave flight to her dreams. Reflecting on her early days, she reminisced, "I obtained my four-wheeler licence in 1981 and then acquired my heavy vehicle licence in 1984. Back then, it was rare for women to venture into driving heavy vehicles, but my husband's continued support propelled me forward." Overcoming Challenges and Pioneering Change The path was not without obstacles. In a time when women behind the wheels of heavy vehicles were a rarity, Radhamani faced curiosity and skepticism. However, fueled by her husband's vision and her own determination, she forged ahead. In 2004, tragedy struck with the untimely demise of her husband. Undeterred, Radhamani seized the reins of their driving school, transforming it from A2Z driving school to A2Z driving institute, expanding its scope to include training for operating heavy equipment. A Lifelong Learner Radhamani's thirst for knowledge extends beyond the steering wheel. Despite her age, she continues to pursue academic endeavors, currently working towards a mechanical engineering diploma. "Learning is an eternal voyage," she affirms, challenging age-old notions about achievements and capabilities. Mastering Every Vehicle Imaginable She holds an astonishing 11 licenses to drive cars, buses, lorries, trailers as well as operate cranes, tractors, forklifts, excavators, road rollers, and even hazardous vehicles. Her advice to those hesitant to take the wheel echoes her own journey: "If you truly desire something, with dedication and belief, you can achieve it." Inspiring Others to Break Boundaries Radhamani's story is one that of hope for women aspiring to enter traditionally male-dominated fields. "Don't perceive driving as exclusive to any particular gender," she advises. "Driving is now considered a necessity for both men and women, offering countless opportunities." A Dreamer at Heart Despite her extensive experience, Radhamani harbors dreams yet unfulfilled. While she has piloted boats and navigated through various terrains, her wish to commandeer a train remains elusive due to age restrictions and complex license formalities.
