A young engineering graduate, Aswatha Narayana Sanagavarapu from Odisha made India proud when he won India’s first-ever gold in the prestigious World Skill Competition at Kazan(Russia) on Tuesday. He showcased his skills in water technology to beat nine other competitors from countries such as Korea, Germany, Brazil, Iran, Belarus, Vietnam, Russia and South Africa.

The World Skills Competition

The World Skills Competition which is also considered as a global hub for skills is held every two years in different parts of the world. More than 1,300 competitors take part in this global event which gives youth a chance to compete, experience and perform their outstanding skills. This year India’s Ashwata Sanagavarapu bagged the gold for India along with Lufeng Zeng from China who also won Gold.

Outstanding Skill

Aswatha is a BTech graduate in Applied electronics from CV Raman Engineering College of Bhubaneswar. He displayed his skills in water technology as he donned the role of a Water Technician to ensure that the potable water is available from a treatment plant. Apart from Ashwata, three other Indians- Pranav Nutalapati, Sanjoy Pramanik and Shweta Ratanpura. Pranav Nutalapati won medals for their skills in web technology and jewellery and graphic design technology. This was India’s best performance ever since its participation in the World Skills Competition in 2007.

Ashwata, the soft-spoken engineer who is known to work relentlessly in the college lab till late evening has won state and national level competitions since 2017. His college also deserves credit as they provided him with all the facilities and even built a lab for Ashwata so that he could work towards developing and perfecting his skill.

Aswatha received accolades from many quarters for his achievement. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated him and said that Odisha was proud of him.
