Running for a Hero: Sekhon IAF Marathon Brings India Together Across Seven Cities
The streets across seven Indian cities turned into a sea of runners as the Indian Air Force hosted the second edition of the Sekhon Indian Air Force Marathon. Held in Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Gwalior, Bengaluru, Guwahati and Jodhpur, the event brought together running enthusiasts, families, fitness lovers and citizens wanting to celebrate the legacy of an Indian Air Force hero.In New Delhi, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Chief of the Indian Air Force, flagged off the run at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.The event was also held ahead of Air Force Day on October 8, adding to its significance.Running in Memory of a Param VirAt the heart of the marathon was the story of Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, the only Indian Air Force personnel to have received the Param Vir Chakra. Sekhon displayed extraordinary courage during the 1971 India-Pakistan War while defending the Srinagar airfield.Flying his Folland Gnat, he engaged Pakistani Sabre aircraft attacking the airfield. His bravery, leadership and willingness to put his own life at risk have since become an enduring part of the Indian Air Force’s history.The marathon was conceived as a way of keeping that legacy alive while bringing the public closer to the stories of India’s air warriors.The scale of the event was particularly visible in Chandigarh, where more than 3,500 runners registered for the marathon.Participants could choose between three categories—the 21-kilometre run for serious runners, the 10-kilometre run for those looking for a challenge and the 5-kilometre fun run for people who simply wanted to join the celebration. The event attracted participants from different parts of the country. Where Fitness Meets Air PowerThe marathon was not just about running. In Guwahati, the event at Sarusajai Stadium also featured displays of IAF weapons, firearms and combat equipment, giving visitors a glimpse into the technology and capabilities of the force.For many, it was an opportunity to see the Indian Air Force beyond the skies—up close, in a setting designed to encourage greater public engagement. The combination of sport, remembrance and military displays also aimed to inspire young people and strengthen their connection with the armed forces.From every stride on the marathon route to the stories of courage behind it, the Sekhon Marathon carried a powerful message: remember the heroes, stay fit and keep the spirit of India soaring.
