Roads of about 1000 km made up of waste plastic in Tamil Nadu
Moving towards effective usage of waste plastic, Tamil Nadu has made over 1000 kilometre roads in the state with the help of 1600 tonnes of waste plastic. As we all know that plastics are non-degradable and pose a great environmental issue. In a wake of effectively managing the waste plastic, state’s Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani mentioned that disposal of plastic waste is posing a major threat to the environment and so the government has come up with this effective measure of using the waste plastic in road construction. A plastic waste technology aids in putting the concept into reality. The project is being funded by the urban local bodies and government special fund. With this financial assistance, a total of 1634.27 tonnes of plastic has been effectively utilized over the past five years for constructing over 1035.23 kilometre of roads. A lot of focus has been shifted towards environment conservation and ways are being found for proper waste disposals. Self-help groups have been appointed and trained for proper collection, segregation and disposal. This five year long initiative was the part of state government’s thrust to manage plastic waste effectively.
