Meet Nathan Thomas: The 18-Year-Old Who Became the World's Youngest Male Professor

Most 18-year-olds are just beginning college life. Nathan Thomas was already standing at the front of a classroom, teaching it. The Florida native has earned the title of the world's youngest male professor, achieving the feat at 18 years and 346 days. In doing so, he broke a 306-year-old Guinness World Records milestone, surpassing Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at the age of 19 in the early 18th century.Thomas began teaching at Miami Dade College in August 2023, leading the course 'C for Engineers' (COP 2270). Remarkably, many of the students in his classroom were the same age as he was. His achievement has not only rewritten the record books but also demonstrated that talent and dedication know no age.Learning Started Long Before Most Children Enter High SchoolNathan's remarkable journey began far earlier than most. At just 10 years old, he enrolled simultaneously in school and Miami Dade College, beginning a path that would astonish educators. By the age of 14, he had transferred to Florida International University, where he completed both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, graduating with honours before most teenagers had even completed high school.Growing up in a family of engineers, Thomas developed an early fascination with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). He credits his mother for nurturing his love for mathematics by making even the most difficult concepts easy to understand.Teaching Beyond AgeWalking into a classroom as the youngest professor in the world could have been intimidating. Instead, Thomas focused on what mattered most—helping students learn. Thomas said that once people are in a classroom, everyone is there for the same reason—to learn—and that age does not really matter in that setting.He believes genuine effort matters more than age, explaining that any student willing to learn deserves the best guidance possible. His dedication has earned admiration from colleagues as well. Manny Perez, Dean of the School of Engineering, Technology & Design at Miami Dade College, described Thomas as someone truly exceptional and an inspiration for students.Still Learning While Inspiring OthersToday, at 21, Nathan Thomas continues teaching online while pursuing a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Miami School of Law, where he is expected to graduate in 2028.Ironically, teaching was always part of his dream—but much later in life.Reflecting on his journey, Thomas said he had always hoped to teach someday, but never imagined the opportunity would come at such a young age.
