TN Couple Transforms Living Room into Library, Spreading the Joy of Reading
In a heartwarming endeavor to promote reading and empower their community, a couple in Tamil Nadu has turned their humble living room into a library. Kalaivanan and G Sujatha, inspired by their love for books and a desire to democratize reading, have created a space where knowledge blossoms. With a meticulously curated collection of nearly two hundred books, the couple's living room has been transformed into a fully-fledged library. Originally acquired for Kalaivanan's personal reading pleasure, these books now serve as a source of inspiration and information for many others. Driven by the belief that books have the power to transform individuals and society, Kalaivanan shares, "I have been an avid reader since my childhood, exploring books beyond the confines of formal education." It was during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic that he observed his neighbors idly passing their time. Motivated by this, he opened his doors and invited them to utilize his reading material, sparking their interest and encouraging frequent visits. Over the past three years, Kalaivanan and his wife have organized small book fairs within their home, collaborating with reputable publishers to offer discounted copies. In an era dominated by digital gadgets and internet connectivity, they recognize the importance of having books at home. Their library has become a gathering place for the younger generation, who visit in the evenings to nurture their reading habits. To further support this passion, Kalaivanan plans to expand the library's collection and offer book lending services.
