This Amazing New Initiative Promotes Plastic-Free Community Feasts!

In an effort to combat the growing plastic waste problem, the village of Kurumunda in Nuapada district has introduced a unique initiative called the 'Bartan Bank.' This bank aims to promote plastic-free community feasts by providing utensils free of cost. The 'Bartan Bank,' spearheaded by sarpanch Saroj Devi, is a community-led project that aims to reduce the use of single-use plastics during social and religious celebrations. The gram panchayat allocated Rs 75,000 from the village funds to create a depot of utensils, including large cooking vessels, steel plates, bowls, glasses, and spoons. During the wedding season and other festivities, villagers can now borrow these utensils from the 'Bartan Bank' instead of relying on disposable plastic plates and cutlery. The initiative not only eliminates the need for purchasing plastic items but also addresses the challenges associated with plastic waste disposal and the risk of animals ingesting it. To ensure transparency, the procurement process involved active participation from villagers and gram panchayat officials. The success of the 'Bartan Bank' in Kurumunda has encouraged plans for its replication throughout the Bhaleswar panchayat, which comprises nine villages. Village elders, with the assistance of youth, will oversee the management of these banks. This sustainable initiative is a significant step towards promoting eco-friendly practices and reducing plastic pollution in Kurumunda. By embracing the concept of a 'Bartan Bank,' the village aims to set an example for other communities and inspire them to adopt similar measures.
