Hima Das, A Golden Girl Of India
A Historic Gold Medal won by Hima Das, a daughter of rice farmer from a small village Dhing of Assam. Her mother was unaware of the Commonwealth games till her daughter participated. She was overwhelmed with joy to see her daughter on TV. "While you all were sleeping, I rocked the world." said the 18 year old athlete to her father over the phone from Finland. "I told her that we all were awake to watch her run on television and she cried." said her father in an interview with TOI. Hima Das always wanted to become a football player. She played with the boys in the mud pits next to the rice fields in her village. Where she was first noticed by a coach Nipon Das who suggested her to move to Sarusajai Sports Complex in Guwahati for better training and also persuaded her parents. Youngest among the five siblings she finished at sixth place in Commonwealth Games earlier this year. She is lovingly called "Dhing Express" by her villagers. She is a role model for all as she is never scared to speak out against illegal things. She played a major role in demolishing liquor vends in her village as well as its neighbourhood. PM Modi congratulated the Golden Girl on her remarkable victory and was deeply touched on seeing her passionate search for the Tricolour immediately after winning and getting emotional while singing National Anthem after her historic win. The outstanding victory by the young athlete has created a history and is one of the proudest moment for all Indian.
