In a remarkable achievement, two young engineers from Hong Kong have been awarded the prestigious 2023 James Dyson Award for their groundbreaking solution to combat the scorching heat in the city. Hoi Fung Ronaldo Chan and Can Jovial Xiao have developed a revolutionary heat-reducing coating called E-COATING, which utilizes 470,000 recycled glass bottles. Hong Kong's sweltering sub-tropical climate heavily relies on air-conditioning, accounting for nearly one-third of the city's electricity consumption. E-COATING not only addresses the issue of waste glass but also significantly reduces the energy required for cooling systems by reflecting the sun's rays. According to Ronaldo, energy usage on air conditioning systems can be reduced by approximately 30% with the application of E-COATING on exterior roofs and walls. This eco-friendly solution demonstrates their commitment to tackling environmental problems and promoting sustainability. Sir James Dyson, the renowned inventor and founder of Dyson, praised the ingenuity behind E-COATING, stating that it transforms waste into something valuable. The coating acts as a dual solution, benefiting the environment and offering cost savings. The World’s Longest Glass Bottomed Bridge Presents a Spectacular View

Vietnam’s Bach Long pedestrian bridge, also known as the ‘White Dragon’ is 632m (2,073ft) long and located 150m (492ft) above a huge jungle in the Moc Chau district of the Son La province in Vietnam. Coincidentally, the bridge was officially opened on the 47th anniversary of the conclusion of the Vietnam War. According to reports, the Bach Long bridge is the longest in the world and its structure is roughly three-fourths the height of the Burj Khalifa Tower. The bridge which was shut to tourists for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic can withstand a capacity of 450-500 people. The bridge is made of French-tempered glass. Guards who keep an eye on the bridge make sure that only one way of traffic is flowing. It surpasses the 526-meter Glass Bottom Bridge in Guangdong, China.  It has a distinctive architectural layout that makes it one of the top tourist destinations. The scary bridge eventually crosses a valley between two hills after winding around mountainsides. The Bach Long Bridge is undoubtedly the most spectacular of the three glass bridges in Vietnam. Another breathtaking mountain footbridge which appears to be supported by two gigantic stone hands was opened in the Central Vietnamese Ba Na Hills in 2018 and garnered international attention.

A Star Is Born and the World’s Most Powerful Telescope Captures It!

The breathtaking image of a flaming cosmic hourglass covered in gorgeous orange and blue dust and sheltering a very young star, or protostar, was captured by NASA's James Webb Telescope, and it has scientists at NASA excited and enthralled. According to NASA, the image taken by Webb's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) provides insight into the birth of a new star and displays the protostar's previously concealed features amid the dark cloud L1527. The Jameswebb Instagram page reveals that there appears to be a dark line at the very center of the "hourglass" that's an edge-on view of a protoplanetary disk, or the disk of material being pulled into the star as it forms. It's about the size of our solar system and may eventually clump into planets, giving us a window into our solar system's history. This star is still developing and contains a disc of debris. It is situated 450 light years away and is being born in a star-forming region called the Taurus. The star will continue to contract under its gravitational pull over the next million years to fully form as a star. The Milky Way galaxy alone has 400 billion stars.  The image is accessible for us to view because of JWST's strong capabilities. Otherwise, in infrared wavelengths, these celestial objects are concealed from the naked eye.

This New Eye Drop May Soon Replace Reading Glasses!

Reversing farsightedness An Isreali based company Orasis Pharmaceuticals has announced that it has developed a corrective eye drop, CSF -1 that has successfully completed Phase 2b clinical study and has been found to be able to temporarily reverse presbyopia, a very common condition that gradually causes far-sightedness in older adults. Safe and Effective The eye drop CSF -1has not only demonstrated remarkable improvement in distance correction but also has displayed an exceptional safety and tolerability profile. This is certainly a significant milestone for people at Orasis who are encouraged with the results and are making relevant preparations for phase 3. According to  Orasis CEO Elad Kedar, phase 2b study comprised of 166 participants who participated in a multi-center, double-masked clinical trial that tested the efficacy and safety of the drops. Kedar said that he and his team are very excited about the consistently positive results and hope to offer a meaningful solution for billions of people living with age-related farsightedness.

New method helps in the 3D print of glass objects

Soon, it will be possible  to make very small optical components for complex computers, thanks to the ability of scientists to develop a way to 3D print objects using glass. Researchers from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany developed a process using glass for additive manufacturing techniques, commonly known as 3D printing.  They could achieve this with the process of Stereolithography which is a form of 3D printing used for creating models, prototypes, patterns and production parts in a layer by layer fashion using photopolymerisation, a process by which light causes chains of molecules to link, forming polymers. This is the first time that the  variety of 3D-printing techniques have been used on glass. Earlier, it  has been used on polymers or metals, but never on glass. The 3D-formed glass can be used, for instance, in data technology. The next plus one generation of computers will use light, which requires complicated processor structures. Researchers said that  3D technology could be used to make small, complex structures out of a large number of very small optical components of different orientations.
