India Successfully Tests Indigenous VSHORADS Missile System, Enhancing Air Defence Capabilities

India has achieved a significant milestone in its defence capabilities with the successful testing of its indigenous Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile. The tests, conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), have bolstered India's air defence capabilities and showcased the country's technological prowess. Enhancing Air Defence Capabilities The VSHORADS missile system, designed to neutralize hostile aircraft, drones, and helicopters at very short ranges, underwent two successful tests on Wednesday and Thursday. These tests were carried out at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, off the Odisha coast. The missiles, launched from a ground-based portable launcher, demonstrated their capability to intercept and destroy high-speed unmanned aerial targets under various interception scenarios. Indigenous Development and Collaboration The VSHORADS missile system is the result of collaborative efforts between the DRDO's Research Centre Imarat (RCI), other DRDO laboratories, and Indian industry partners. It incorporates several innovative technologies, including miniaturized reaction control systems and integrated avionics, which have been proven successful during the tests. The missile's design, including its launcher, has been optimized for easy portability. Defence Minister's Appreciation Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, the Indian Army, and the industry involved in the successful development trials. The acceptance of the necessity for procuring the VSHORADS missiles was granted by the defence acquisitions council in January last year, highlighting the government's commitment to strengthening India's defence capabilities. Operational Gaps and Future Plans While the indigenous VSHORADS missile system undergoes further development and production, the Indian armed forces have been acquiring a limited number of similar Russian systems to address operational gaps. These Russian systems, such as the Igla-S MANPADS, have been procured to reinforce the military's capabilities during the ongoing confrontation with China in eastern Ladakh. The Igla-S MANPADS, with its longer interception range of up to 6 kilometers, provides an improved variant compared to the existing Igla-1M systems. The armed forces have previously signed deals for the procurement of the Igla-S missiles and launchers. However, the successful tests of the indigenous VSHORADS missile system pave the way for reducing reliance on foreign acquisitions and strengthening India's self-reliance in defence manufacturing. A Bacteria in Soil That Removes Pesticide!

We all know of the harmful effects that pesticides have on our soil. The chemicals in the pesticides kill the good microbes present in the soil and thereby, soil loses its fertility. Studies have suggested that they might also be carcinogenic. The good news is that researchers at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay have identified a strain of bacteria in soil that actually breaks down and helps to eliminate the carbaryl pesticide. Why Pesticides Are Harmful Numerous tests and experimental studies in laboratory animals have suggested that carbaryl pesticide may probably be carcinogenic to humans. Yet, its use is rampant in the agricultural sector. Carbaryl also leads to pollution of both soil and water ecosystems How Bacteria Works The newly identified bacterial strain utilizes carbon and nitrogen for its growth. It acts on carbaryl to generate 1-naphthol and methylamine which are sources of carbon and nitrogen respectively. There are some microbes that have been known to degrade carbaryl, but this bacteria which comes under the Pseudomonas genus could completely degrade the pesticide at a rate that is four to five times faster than other bacterial strains. It has been found that the soil with a high concentration of carbaryl is conducive to the growth of this bacteria. Dr Prashant S. Phale who is an author of the study explained that nature acts as a laboratory of its own where organisms in an ecosystem interact with each other and exchange genetic material for their benefit and survival.

According to a study published in the journal Nature, scientists have discovered a new approach that combines antibiotics with a protective antidote to reduce the adverse effects of antibiotics on the gut microbiome without compromising the efficiency of the drugs. The study analyzed the effects of 144 different antibiotics on the abundance of the most common gut bacteria, and the researchers identified a novel approach that helps keep the gut microbiome healthy and reduces the harmful side effects of antibiotics. Antibiotics have been known to cause an imbalance in the microbial communities in the human gut, leading to recurrent gastrointestinal problems caused by infections and long-term health problems such as obesity, allergies, asthma, and other inflammatory diseases. The researchers systematically analyzed the growth and survival of 27 different bacterial species commonly found in the gut following treatment with 144 different antibiotics. They also assessed the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) for over 800 of these antibiotic-bacteria combinations. The results showed that the majority of gut bacteria would not be affected by commonly used antibiotic concentrations. To protect the gut microbes, the researchers combined the antibiotics erythromycin and doxycycline with a set of 1,197 pharmaceuticals to identify suitable drugs that would protect two abundant gut bacterial species from the antibiotics. They identified several promising drugs, including the anticoagulant dicumarol, the gout medication benzbromarone, and two anti-inflammatory drugs, tolfenamic acid and diflunisal. The study found that these drugs did not compromise the effectiveness of the antibiotics against disease-causing bacteria. This breakthrough could help prevent long-term damage caused by antibiotics while still treating bacterial infections effectively.

Super Bacteria To Clean Up China’s Textile Waste

Hong Kong’s biggest cloth makers TAL Apparel have teamed up with researchers at City University to identify bacteria that can efficiently clean up the enormous wastewater generated by the textile industry. It has become the need of the hour as decades of unbridled industrial growth has left China with a legacy of rampant pollution, shrinking aquifers and soaring water prices. According to a 2015 report by New York-based non-profit group Natural Resources Defense Council, cloth-making ranks third in China for the amount of wastewater it discharges — 3 billion tonnes a year — after chemicals and paper. The government, therefore, in 2015 released its Water Ten Plan, ushering in stricter waste-water regulations. It sets out 10 general measures to control pollution discharge, promote technology and strengthen water management and set 2020 as the deadline to meet its goals. Tals chairman Harry Lee said that stricter regulation requires manufacturers to upgrade their facilities. TAL had been buying bacteria from other labs to treat water used for washing cloth. The bacteria digest organic compounds can cut the amount of waste sludge generated by as much as 80 percent. However, during a week-long production halt, the bacteria in its system died. TA has now set up a research program to find a super bacteria that would be cheaper and more efficient. Lee said that if they succeed, the results will be shared with other manufacturers.
