The catamaran is designed not just for transportation but to offer tourists an unforgettable sojourn through Kochi's scenic waterways. The boat, meticulously tested during trial runs between Fort Kochi and Ernakulam, is all set to commence regular services in the New Year. 'Indra' will ply its route connecting prominent islands such as Ernakulam Jetty, Vypeen, Bolgatty, Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, and Willingdon Island. The boat aims to provide a three-hour panoramic journey along the backwaters, inviting travelers to relish the region's natural beauty. What distinguishes 'Indra' from other conventional vessels is not only its solar-powered propulsion but also its affordable pricing. For a mere Rs 300, passengers can indulge in a leisurely three-hour exploration of Kochi's backwaters. Equipped to accommodate 100 passengers, 'Indra' boasts premium amenities, safety protocols, and captivating interiors. Powered by twin 20kw electric motors, the vessel can gracefully reach a top speed of seven knots, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey for all on board. The resounding success of the Kochi Water Metro, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June, has served as a catalyst for SWTD's expansion endeavors.  As 'Indra' prepares to embark on its inaugural voyage, it symbolizes more than just a mode of transport; it signifies a commitment towards sustainable and memorable travel experiences. A First for India: PM Modi Inaugurates Kochi Water Metro

India has launched its first-ever "Water Metro" services in Kochi, Kerala, connecting 10 islands around Kochi with electrically propelled hybrid ferries. The project, costing Rs 1,136.83 crore, was funded by the Kerala government and German funding agency KfW. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the project on Tuesday, calling it a significant enhancement to the city's infrastructure. The service will benefit more than a lakh residents of the islands, easing their daily commute and transportation. Manufactured by Cochin Shipyard Limited, the project will begin with eight electric hybrid boats, with a total of 78 electric boats and 38 terminals. The Kochi Water Metro project's first phase will start with service from High Court-Vypin terminals to Vyttila-Kakkanad terminals, with a minimum ticket rate of Rs 20. The service will offer weekly and monthly passes for regular passengers, and passengers can use the Kochi One Card to travel in both Kochi Metro Rail and Kochi Water Metro. Tickets can be booked digitally through the Kochi One App. The project has also generated employment opportunities for women in the region, with thirty staff appointed for housekeeping and ticketing from the women self-help group, Kudumbashree. The group expressed that more women would be employed as the need arises. The launch of India's first-ever Water Metro services marks a significant step towards developing the country's water-based transportation infrastructure, promoting eco-friendly transportation and boosting the economy.

Florida Man Bravely Rescues Four People from Sinking Houseboat During Storm

A man in Florida is being hailed as a hero for his brave actions during a freak storm. When a houseboat with four people on board began sinking in the rough waters, the man jumped in to rescue them. The incident took place on Lake George, where a sudden storm caused waves to crash into the houseboat, causing it to take on water. The four people on board were trapped and unable to get to safety. The man, who was nearby in his own boat, saw what was happening and immediately jumped into action. Despite the dangerous conditions, he swam to the sinking houseboat and was able to pull all four people to safety. Thanks to his quick thinking and bravery, all four people were rescued without injury. The man's actions have been praised by local authorities and the community, who say that he is a true hero. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for emergencies and looking out for one another. An “ Airline First”: British Airways Includes Jumpsuits and Hijab in Its Revamped Uniform as a Step Towards Inclusivity

  British Airways, in a heartening move of inclusiveness, has added hijabs and tunics to their newly revamped set of uniforms. It's been nearly two decades since the Airways brought a change to its staff’s attire. The new uniform, designed by Savile Row fashion designer and tailor Ozwald Boateng will take the place of the present one, which was developed by Julien MacDonald. The female crew has the option of wearing a dress, skirt and trousers, or a modern jumpsuit. In a first, the international airline offers women the choice of a tunic and a hijab. The male cabin crew would, on the other hand, be fitted in a tailored three-piece. In a report in The Indian Express, Boateng states that the design is a “truly original collection”.  “The airwave pattern that features across the entire uniform collection including jackets, t-shirts, buttons and ties was inspired by the movement of air over an aircraft wing. The jacquard fabric across all of the tailored garments features a variation of the airline's iconic speedmarque,” he added. Boateng revealed that it took a lot of time and even more effort to design this legendary collection that will stand the test of time and it was worth the wait.  The new uniform will be worn for the first time by the airline's engineers and ground personnel starting in the spring of 2023. All members of British Airways cabin crew, pilots, and check-in agents will transition to the new uniform in the summer of 2023.

The view of the lake from the terrace of the hotel is very captivating and one can spend hours soaking in the natural beauty. Tourists can also enjoy a wonderful boat ride in the expansive lake. It is a great opportunity for bird watchers to enjoy bird watching due to the presence of a large number of migratory birds and many species of other local birds. The water of the lake is usually clear and though some parts of the lake are infested by crocodiles, the boatmen take care not to ferry the tourists to those places. The serene beauty of the lake is enhanced by the Aravalli mountains in the backdrop. One can also visit nearby tourist attractions like Neemrana Palace, the Sariska National Park and JaiSamand Lake.

The Unique Traditional Boat Race of Kerala

The traditional boat race of Kerala makes for a wonderful sight as long slender canoe-like boats shaped like a snake are rowed by around 100 participants in each boat who race against each other to win the coveted trophy. During the monsoon months, a number of boat races take place in Kerala, among which the Nehru Trophy boat race is very popular. The name comes from the incident when Jawaharlal Nehru visited Kerala in 1952 and was very much fascinated by the magnanimity of the occasion. The locals had hosted a boat race in his honour and he was so impressed that he even hopped into a boat among the rowers. On his return to Delhi, he donated a trophy to hold the race every year which is the popular Nehru Trophy held annually. The boat race also called ‘Vallamkali’ in local parlance was flagged off by ace cricketer Sachin Tendulkar in the backwaters of Kerala’s Alappuzha district on Saturday.  After a volley of gunshots, the longboats crewed by as many as 150 rowers zipped past the starting line. The snake boats are highly labour intensive and are usually 100 feet long. In each boat, there are two drummers who beat out a rhythm which the oarsmen follow. This year the race got even more popular as it took the form of Indian Premier League (IPL). The Champions Boat League (CBL), comprising of a series of 12 races is all set to raise the excitement level as it spreads the event over a longer period of time at multiple venues. The greatest show on water in India is also special because people from all walks of life – fishermen, farmers, postmen, shopkeepers, teachers- of all faiths, castes, and even gender—with women rowers getting introduced for the first time, participating in it. All these players unite and follow one rhythm to propel their boat to victory. After two consecutive years of flood in the state, this year’s boat race is certain to bring back the cheer and celebration.
