France's Thales to Upgrade Air India's Inflight Entertainment System

Air India has chosen France's Thales to upgrade its inflight entertainment system, offering passengers an enhanced onboard experience. Thales will provide state-of-the-art technology and features to improve the entertainment options for Air India's passengers. Thales Enhances Air India's Inflight Entertainment Thales, a Paris-headquartered aerospace company, has been selected by Air India to upgrade and retrofit the onboard entertainment systems of the airline's fleet, which includes 40 Boeing B777 and B787 aircraft.  Advanced Features and Connectivity The upgraded entertainment system will include advanced features such as wifi connectivity, high-resolution displays, and 3D maps. Passengers will also have the convenience of connecting their wireless hearing devices via Bluetooth to enjoy the entertainment content. Expanding the Upgrade Thales will not only upgrade the existing fleet but also install the advanced entertainment system on Air India's 11 new Airbus and Boeing aircraft, set to be delivered starting in 2025. This move ensures that the airline's entire fleet will offer a seamless and modern inflight entertainment experience. April onwards UDAN flights to start under regional air connectivity programme.

The ‘Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik’ (UDAN) scheme would begin from April. The aviation ministry has announced the first regional flight accordingly. Under the UDAN scheme, the government will provide air travel facility to common man with a subsidised per hour of flight airfare at Rs 2,500 only. As per the reports in The Economic Times, civil aviation secretary R N Choubey said, “We expect that the first regional flight will start from next month.” The ministry announced that five airlines have submitted 27 proposals, which have been accepted. By enforcing this programme, the government will facilitate connectivity to 31 additional airports in the country. Further, these airlines will together connect 128 routes across India. Choubey added that, “In a century of civil aviation, only 76 airports connected with scheduled commercial flights. In one year since aviation policy was announced, 31 more unserved airports will get connectivity.” The government will provide a subsidy of Rs 205 crore for the first year of starting a regional flight. At last, taking a flight from a regional airport will be a reality for the citizens residing in the remote areas of India.

Revolutionizing Mobility: South Korean Universities Unveil Cutting-Edge Material Advancements for Air and Road Travel

South Korean universities have developed a new composite material that could revolutionize air and road mobility. Researchers from Solutions to Electromagnetic Interference in Future-mobility (SEIF), Hanyang University, and Jeonbuk National University have created a self-reinforced composite (SRC) that uses only one type of polypropylene (PP) polymer, resulting in improved bonding and tensile strength, as well as impact resistance. In fact, the SRC they created had adhesive strength 333% greater than composites currently in use, while tensile strength was 228% greater and impact resistance was a staggering 2,700% higher.  Apart from toughness, SRCs are lightweight, inexpensive, and have advantages in terms of disposal and recycling as the reinforcement and the base material are composed of the same material. Current manufacturing processes for SRCs involve mixing chemically different components, resulting in poorer physical properties and preventing recyclability. However, the Korean researchers found a successful way to control the melting point, fluidity, and impregnation by adjusting the chain structure of the polypropylene matrix through a four-axis extrusion process. The new material is being looked at as the next-generation composite material to replace carbon-fiber-reinforced composites used in vehicle and aircraft/drone bodies. With the new composite material, vehicles and aircrafts will be more fuel-efficient while significantly reducing carbon footprints. The development of this new material could pave the way for a more sustainable future in air and road mobility.
