How a Colorblind Artist from Rural Pune Reached the World Stage of Art!
Born in rural Pune, with roots in Kolhapur, Prem Awale discovered his love for art in the most unexpected way. Growing up in a modest household—his father a watchman and his mother a homemaker—life was far from easy. But the vast open spaces in front of his home became his first canvas. As a child, he would grab pieces of charcoal from the kitchen and sketch on the walls, unknowingly laying the foundation for an incredible artistic journey.His mother was the first to recognize his talent. Despite financial struggles, she encouraged him to draw more. Unable to afford formal training, he began honing his skills by participating in local competitions. He used the prize money to buy better art supplies. Charcoal gave way to oil paints, and his fascination with art deepened.A Turning Point: The Florence Academy of ArtAfter years of perseverance, exhibitions, and competitions, he applied for the prestigious Florence Academy of Art’s Summer Scholarship Art Contest. Out of countless applicants worldwide, he was one of just three artists selected to attend the "Advanced Portrait" Workshop in Italy.Winning the scholarship was only half the battle. The costs of traveling and living in Florence seemed insurmountable. But friends, family, and mentors supported him. In just one month at the Florence Academy, he learned techniques that would have taken years elsewhere. From temperature-controlled studios and premium art materials to lessons from world-renowned professors, the experience was nothing short of transformative.The city itself was a masterpiece. Art was everywhere—on the streets, in museums, and even in the air. His days were spent exploring the academy and soaking in Florence’s rich artistic heritage. He treasured every moment of it.Returning to India, his artistic journey soared to new heights. Recently, he won the prestigious 60th State Art Exhibition Competition organized by the Government of Maharashtra for his painting "The Hardworker." His work, inspired by his roots and his pursuit of excellence, now serves as a symbol of hope for aspiring artists.Reflecting on his journey, he believes art has immense potential for those willing to dedicate themselves wholeheartedly. Despite being born colorblind, he has proven that passion and perseverance can overcome even the toughest challenges.
