Artificial Intelligence to Help Conserve Wildlife in UP
Artificial intelligence is gradually pervading all walks of life and now it will also help in preserving wildlife and forests which is the need of the hour. A team of Artificial Intelligence experts from IIT Kanpur visited the Dudhwa national park to understand the constraints faced by the front end staff. Taking into consideration all the problems faced in the forest, they will be developing technological solutions to counter the difficulties. AI-Based Technology The IIT experts spent a few days at the reserve and demonstrated the use of various available technologies like 3D LiDAR which helps in mapping the forests and various parameters of trees like density, diameter, height and numbers. They also demonstrated the use of AI-based vision technology for the identification and counting of animals, behavioural study and analysis as well as generation of alerts for timely rescue of injured animals. Challenges Faced The IIT experts have got an idea of the challenges faced in the forest which include tracking illegal felling of trees. One of the biggest challenges faced is the risk of man-animal conflict. The forest officials have asked the experts to develop a system that would alert them whenever an animal strays out of the forest so that the response time is minimal and the animal can be rescued at the earliest. These joint efforts of the UP forest department and the IIT experts will definitely lead to the forests being monitored by an AI-based system thus assisting in the conservation of forests and biodiversity.
