BAF Hasiru Initiative Promotes Sustainable Wastewater Treatment in Bengaluru
In a commendable effort to tackle the water crisis in Bengaluru, the Bangalore Apartment Federation (BAF) has launched the 'BAF Hasiru' initiative, which seeks to promote the efficient consumption of treated wastewater for various purposes. With the city generating a staggering 2,000 million liters per day (MLD) of wastewater, this initiative holds great potential for sustainable water management. The BAF Hasiru program aims to create awareness among citizens about the importance of utilizing treated wastewater instead of relying solely on freshwater sources. By treating 700 MLD of wastewater for multiple tertiary uses, apartments can become significant suppliers of this valuable resource. To kickstart the initiative, a workshop called 'Retrofit' was organized, focusing on energy and water efficiency measures, as well as sustainable solutions. With over 1,240 apartments and Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) representing nearly 300,000 households as members of BAF, the scope for impact is substantial. However, the question that arises is whether the 'BAF Hasiru' initiative can truly revolutionize wastewater treatment in Bengaluru. Can it effectively change the mindset of citizens and encourage them to adopt sustainable practices? Will it lead to a significant reduction in the city's water consumption? These are crucial aspects that need to be explored. By promoting the responsible and efficient use of treated wastewater, BAF Hasiru has the potential to transform Bengaluru's water management landscape. It is a step towards a sustainable future, but its success will ultimately depend on the participation and commitment of the citizens.
