C S Soumya lives in the bustling heart of Thiruvananthapuram, a place where the scent of spices fills the air and the rhythm of everyday life pulses through the streets. At 39, Soumya’s life is a mosaic of passions and pursuits, pieced together by her deep-rooted desire to make a difference. A PhD holder in Sanskrit and a classical dancer by heart, Soumya spent a decade teaching at the Regional Centre of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit. Yet, it was the global covid  pandemic that transformed her path in the most unexpected way. As the world went into lockdown, Soumya found herself teaching online classes from home. The isolation and monotony began to wear on her, and she yearned for something more—something that could reignite her spirit and connect her to the world outside her four walls. Thus, in July 2022, “Dancing Mind” was born. This YouTube channel was not just a creative outlet but a lifeline, offering a platform to share the untold stories of Kerala’s unsung culinary heroes.   Unlike many food vloggers who flock to high-end restaurants, Soumya's lens focused on the modest wayside eateries and small shops struggling to survive. Soumya traveled through narrow alleys and bustling markets, her camera capturing the soul of each dish and the resilience of those who prepared them. Inspired by a tragic accident that claimed the life of his hearing-impaired friend, Rajalipasha embarked on a mission to find a solution to the challenges faced by deaf individuals while driving. His brainchild, a safety helmet specially crafted for the deaf, took shape after two years of dedicated work. What sets this helmet apart is its ability to illuminate the front whenever a vehicle honks from behind, alerting the wearer to approaching vehicles. With this innovation, Rajalipasha aims to empower the hearing-impaired and enhance their safety on the roads. Another impressive invention is TechRedi, developed by a team of four biotechnology graduates: Tejaswi Velugapally, K Pragnya Sree, B Sai Mrudula, and G Sunidhi. TechRedi aims to address the storage and mobility challenges faced by street vendors. By designing a model that can keep vegetables fresh for up to four days, this innovation not only helps vendors avoid losses but also ensures customers have access to fresh and healthy produce. Additionally, the model enables vendors to travel longer distances using an e-vehicle, further improving their mobility and reach. The People's Festival of Innovations will also showcase two other noteworthy inventions. One is an automated mechanical timer device that enhances drip irrigation, designed by Gopal Singh Thakur and his son Rajesh. This device aims to reduce human errors in watering crops, thereby saving water and improving crop yields. Indian Student Showered With Praise and Award for His Plogging Missions in UK

  Vivek Gurav never imagined that what started as a mission to clean his city of litter would eventually win him an award in the UK. He founded the "Pune Ploggers" plogging Community in India in 2018, and it already has over 10,000 members who have gathered over 1 million kg of trash.  Plogging which combines “jogga” (jogging) with “plocka upp” (a pick-up) is a Swedish concept. In simple terms, it means picking up litter while jogging. When Gurav accepted his scholarship position at Bristol University in September of last year, he made the decision to carry on the tradition. Since then, according to his university, he has driven to 30 UK locations and logged over 420 miles on 120 plogging "missions" with volunteers from 180 different nations. In a telephonic interview from London, Gurav told the Times of India that picking up litter was a simple and easy thing but it also helps to demonstrate that individual actions can be the solution to protecting the environment and that people themselves can go beyond government policy. It's interesting to note that, in comparison to Indian cities, he does not believe that streets in western cities are litter-free. Western cities exhibit a strong consumerism culture, and there is a lot of litter on the streets. Speaking with people about it has helped in bringing attention to it and other more significant environmental issues. His actions earned him the Points of Light Award from 10 Downing Street earlier this year, which recognizes individuals making a difference in their communities. Gurav was honored for organizing more than 140 volunteers to clear more than 3,750 kg of rubbish through his 250 running challenges throughout Bristol.

LED streetlights will save Rs 50 crores...Know how

In a move that will save RS 50 crore of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), over two lakh conventional street lights will be replaced with LEDs in the next nine months. NDMC Commissioner Praveen Gupta said that work will commence on Sunday in Rohini and Narela zones where 2.05 lakh streetlights will be replaced. The whole conventional lighting system,  semi half-mast lights and lights in parks of North Delhi will be changed to LEDs. A contract for 1.15 lakh light fixtures has been sealed for the two big zones of Rohini and Narela. Addressing a press conference, Gupta said that the remaining 90,000 will be in the City, Civil Lines, Sadar Paharganj and Karol Bagh zones. With this initiative, 65-70 per cent energy will be saved. 79 per cent of the revenue through energy saving will go to the concessionaire while NDMC will claim the remaining 21per cent that amounts to Rs 14 crore annually. Gupta stated that along with a cut in expenditure on maintenance charges, the total saving for the civic body will amount to Rs 50 crore annually for a period of seven years. The concessionaire will take care of the recurring maintenance charges of around Rs 24 crore being paid to discoms, Rs 7 crore for the maintenance of semi high mast lights and Rs 3 crore for their replacement fittings annually. Therefore, these charges will also be spared for the civic body. As a result, there will be a total saving of Rs 350 crore in the next seven years after which the whole system will be controlled by the NDMC.
