Uncovering India's First Underwater Metro: An Innovation in Public Transport
Kolkata, the city of joy, has once again made headlines with its latest achievement in public transport – an underwater metro. With its test runs recently conducted, this project has caught the attention of the world. Metros have always been an efficient and affordable means of transport in cities. Kolkata was the first city in India to start a metro in 1984 and now it has added another feather in its cap with this latest accomplishment. The underwater metro project, a part of the Kolkata East-West Metro Project, will run through the Hooghly River, making it a unique and fascinating experience for commuters. According to a report in the Times of India, the recent test run of two metro trains, consisting of six coaches each, covered a distance of 4.8 kilometres between Esplanade and Howrah Maidan. Although the Sealdah-Esplanade section, which is 2.5 kilometres long, was not completed, the authorities decided to conduct the test run anyway. This was a commendable decision considering the multiple delays that have hindered the completion of this section. The Green line of the Kolkata metro, which stretches across 16.6 kilometres from Howrah Maidan to Sector V in East Kolkata, will include the underwater metro project. While parts of the line are already operational, temporary tracks will be used for the incomplete sections. The battery-powered engine will lead the metro after Sealdah because the tunnel does not yet have electrified third rails. However, after crossing the tunnel from Esplanade, the trains will ply normally again. Kolkata’s underwater metro project is a groundbreaking achievement that sets a new standard for public transport. The completion of this project will benefit the city greatly and make commuting easier and more efficient. With this accomplishment, Kolkata continues to lead the way in innovation and development.
